Does your price limit keep going higher/lower with each doll?

Jan 8, 2011

    1. I feel like the way I justify buying dolls is kind of erratic. Most of the time it's a doll by doll kind of situation. If I have to pay for a doll all at once $200ish is my maximum for SD size(Silvester was the only exception $290), for MSD size $100ish and anything smaller is really dependent upon what it is.

In general I'm a cheap person, it's no different with BJDs probably because I managed to get my first two dolls for $250 which was half the price of one of them. I try to buy my dolls as cheap as I can get them, so I'm constantly on the lookout on the secondhand market.

At the same time though I just put a $300 MSD sized doll on layaway, so I guess I'm willing to spend more money on a doll if I really want it and can break the payments up.

My mind is a confusing place:sweat

    2. My first doll was 150$.
My most expensive doll to date is 355$.

      But now I want a nearly 800$ doll. I WILL get him . . . its just a matter of time. . .

    3. first of all congratulations on an upcoming baby! But as far as your question goes, I don't usually have a limit on how much I'm willing to pay on a doll. I just sort of pick out the doll I fall in love with and then save. A more expensive doll just means it will take a little longer to save up for it. But one of the good things about this hobby is that it teaches you patients. Even if you rush to pay, there is still the long wait until you meet the doll you paid for.

    4. Let's seee.... Florian was $150 or so, Jezabel was $465, Harper $150, and Adam just under $400, I believe...
And my new boy, who is on the way to me now, cost around 300.

It's fluctuated a lot for me. I'm getting Nicholas soon, a SoulDoll/Loongsoul hybrid, and he will be my most expensive doll to date.
I also have a pricey DC hybrid planned... But after that I want to buy nice heads, and put them on cheaper bodies, like F-Doll.

So I'm thinking I'll reach my max amount there, then be at peace hybridizing for price.
I'm glad too, because Soul Doll/Loongsoul is getting up there for me. Like... way up there.

    5. I started off with an expensive doll that was too big for me, & from there my mini sized girls cost a bit less. I really wanted to get a custom Iplehouse J.I.D. girl, which would cost way less than my other dolls, but I like the idea of getting a light brown girl !! :aheartbea

    6. In my case it seems to oscillate wildly...

My 1st doll was pretty expensive - $100 head (that was on sale the usual price was $150...) + $400 body... To be fair, the head was from a very small company, and the body was in the SD+ range

2nd was a similar price range! The big SD+ DZs are pretty steep but I love the style that company has!

By my 3rd doll I wanted a doll I wasn't scared to mod so I went the other extreme, $200 for a custom colour RS (Dark tan you can sand, it goes all the way through the resin! - What's not to like?)

4th doll was $180 - a second hand big obitsu, she was an impulse splurge, but well worth every penny! She's my nekomimi, the resin guys all look on enviously as she stalks various objects around the household...

And 5th doll has gone back to the other extreme... So high that I don't really want to name how much it was! I've been Soomed...

    7. Mine hasn't fluctuated that much, honestly. My first doll was roughly 600 dollars, give or take on shipping. My most expensive doll was upwards of 800, and the rest of them are significantly lower than either of those. If the stars were aligned, yeah. I'd probably have a much higher limit than I do now. Being a poor college kid with enough money to live on from a part time job makes things a little more difficult, though. I have to scrutinize what I use my money on, so I'd probably end up spending $1000+ on a macbook pro before a doll at this point in time, or a really nice lens for my camera. I love you resin babies but you're not going to help me with my homework. :sweat

    8. I bounce around. My most expensive was my Volks Olivia, who was $1300. She has since gone on to be Buff's Black Widow. My cheapest was my Bobobie Erin, who was only $80. So it varies. I tend to stay though from $300 to $600 though.

    9. Mine really varies. The upper limit has risen (3 dolls ago I bought one for $1200, I'd prefer not to match that, but it'll likely happen again) my first doll, a serendipity shall, was under $300 (not sure the exact amount, that was 8 years ago!) My 2nd was 400, then I jumped into SDs with a Volks - 800-ish, followed immediately by a 2nd Volks SD for 1000.

In general, if I like a doll I'll get it. Even if I have to buy it in pieces. But I do my research and do my best not to spend $500+ on a head. Bodies I'll pay whatever the general going rate is- up to 750-ish. I know what dolls sell for and purchase them according to their value, not whatever is cheap (though I love it when I want an inexpensive doll!)

    10. I am a firm believer in no price limit
if I can save up for a 400 dollar doll then I can save up for an 800 doll too
For me the wait is worth it if it's something I really love

    11. I stay sort of in the same range (500-600 or so). The cheapest doll I bought was a pukipuki, but I didn't consider that it was cheap. I just really wanted one.
That said, I'm willing to splurge a lot of money on one doll, so long as it's the doll. But even then, it'd be the only doll I'd own, since I'd get rid of the rest.

    12. If your first doll was pretty expensive, do you start looking inherently for dolls of more reasonable prices?
My first doll was 500+ (an old style dollshe) and well....
its not that after him I actually started looking for dolls with more reasonable prices.

In my case actually after buying him other (higher) prices started to feel more and more reasonable.
When I started looikng for more dolls and fell in love with soom amber I actually caught myself thinking
"hmm she's 1000+ with her extra's well thats very reasonable for what she comes with" *_*

Or do you just go back and forth with each purchase? Buy one expensive, one reasonable, then one expensive?
These days my doll prices tend to go up and down from doll to doll.
This is mostly because price is not the first thing I look at anymore, I look at the doll first,
If I really fall in love and want to consider buying it, thats when I look at price.
Sometimes that works out positively "hey thats less than I would have thought"
But sometimes my wallet just screams "AUCH" and if the price is to high at that time I have to reconsider the doll
(and/or get it when I have saved up for it).

    13. Mine varies a LOT! My dolls range in price from about $150 to $700. it doesn't steadily go up or down. I buy the dolls I love. Sometimes, it means shelling out more than I'd like to, just to get it right. Sometimes, I'm pleasantly surprised when I fall for a "cheap" doll. A LOT of my dolls are hybrids. It does make it cheaper when I want an expensive sculpt, but that's not my only reason for doing it. Strangely, I tend to fall for some expensive head sculpts, but I don't actually like a lot of the bodies that go with them.

    14. So far mine are all basically expensive. Partly this is because I'm interested in the more adult looking dolls, so they're bigger & naturally on the expensive side. And partly it's because I always want a perfect, finished doll, with a beautiful face up and manicure. But maybe I'll branch out and get some smaller ones - you never know.

    15. I definitely think mine is going to go up. I am not sure I am happy about this, but >> my first doll was only $200, so unless I manage to find some other great deals or buy 2nd hand, I doubt I will have that kind of luck again! Plus, the more dolls I see, the more dolls I want to buy. It's definitely a cyclical!

However, I don't think I'd ever spend $1k or so on a doll. It's just too much. Even buying full sets is daunting to me, even though I am beginning to realize how expensive and difficult it is to find clothes, so full sets are really kind of amazing, when you can find them, lol.

    16. My first doll was a $295~ Illusion Spirit, and the second was a $850 (included more than just the body and head) Soom Ender. So...It depends on the sculpt, for me! :D I'd be willing to pay almost anything for my dream doll, haha...

    17. $1,000 for a well-made doll seems reasonable to me, but this is probably because I'm used to collecting other pricey items and everything is relative.

    18. Well, yes. My first doll was $150, then $200, then $250, later $350 up to $500 and $800... But I would never go over $1000 :)

    19. My price limit for certain dolls changes...But I will NOT pay over three hundred including the wig, shoes, eyes I want to make it whole. The current doll I want currently is a LUTS Kid Delf Yuz (I just about cried when I saw him because he was perfect for my character, Noah.) is 240...I do not know about shipping from LUTS still curious about that...But if push comes to shove I'll wait for the marketplace. I'm not above buying a yellowed, used doll.

    20. My price range jumped up a fair bit after the first two, but it's stayed the same ever since!
