Does your price limit keep going higher/lower with each doll?

Jan 8, 2011

    1. I remember vividly when I was searching for my first BJD thinking this specific one at about $300 was far too much. Both dolls I own now are in the $200 range, but now I'm saving up for a minifee chloe, and those are quite a bit more compared to the ones I have. If I remember right the minifees are about $400, and that's without buying the company faceup (though I'm not sure how much shipping will be)

But to answer your question, I don't really think my price range has changed, the minifee is a special occasion (for now!) since I absolutely can't find another cheaper alternative with the same spark. for MSD's I still look for about 200-300. Sd's would be a different story since they're bigger.

    2. My first two dolls were less expensive, then my third was more pricey, the fourth went back down in price, then the fifth and sixth went back up. The most recent doll I bought cost twice what my first did, but that's largely because she's a fullset and my first wasn't. But I have one on order that's even more. She's a fullset, but still will be the most expensive to date.

This can be explained largely by my husband. He didn't want me to get a fullset at first, because they were too much. But I think by now he realizes that this hobby wasn't a whim that I'll easily get bored of, and he's resigned himself to the cost.

    3. No, it doesn't. My price limit is very mixed, it really depends on the doll.. From my first to my newest it has been very mixed, my first, third and fourth have cost about $230, but my second ond cost me about $330. My fifth cost $260, sixth is about $310 including shipping, seventh is about $195 incl. shipping. so it's changing a lot. But my normal limit I try to keep up with is about $250 if possible, but it really depends on the doll. :3

    4. As long as there are doll parties in Japan... and... as long as Soom publish new dolls....I will just keep spending more and more money on these beauties...

    5. My spending limit keeps going higher and higher. My first two dolls were resinsouls and cost less than $150. Then I shelled out $500 or so for my Migidoll Ryeong. Now I have my eye on one of those $1000 AE mermaids. The merman to be pricise. I just spend so much time gawking at him, but passed him off as way too expensive. But now I've got a job, and I can save up a bit each week, so it's not that far out of the question for me anymore. :D

    6. When I first started, I thought that $300 for and SD was super expensive, and that it wouldn't be worth the money. And so my first boy was an MSD and around $170-ish area. Then I started looking around and low and behold, a few months later I purchased another MSD for a total of $400 (including shipping). Yeah, easy to say that from that moment on any price range was considered 'okay' by some standpoint. That said, I do like to cut corners on dolls when I can!

    7. I feel that inexpensive dolls are definitely gateway drugs. You can go from the 100s to the 300s to the 500s in less than a year--I did. Now I'm looking at something in the 600 range. I think once you've gotten over the 300 dollar hump, it's all downhill from there for your wallet, because once you've spent THAT MUCH just on a doll, an extra one or two hundred on top of that doesn't seem like such a lot. You just get desensitized to the idea.

I'm back down to affordable dolls now (uber affordable--Monster High) but I still look at five and six hundred dollar dolls with an eye to buying them someday. I don't think there's a cure for this indifference to cost once you catch it. I have yet to work out whether that's a good thing or a bad thing.

    8. I like to think mine aren't going up... That said I did go in for Creamy Mami who cost as much as at best two of my previous dolls combined. I've been trying to stick to a logic list of three things where at least one has to be true in addition to "I like how it looks".
      1. Is it on the list of 6 character dolls I would want?
      2. Is it by a sculptor I like?
      3. Is it under $200.

    9. My first doll was definitely the most expensive, a sold-out LE fullset Soom doll. I haven't spent as much on a doll since, and doubt I ever will. I have usually spent between $500-$800 on all dolls since (not including clothes, eyes, etc).

    10. Honestly I can't remember how much my first doll was! I want to say she was around $400? I've generally been staying around that price, but every once in a while a rare doll will come up for sale that costs quite a bit more and I find myself willing to pay for it!

When I first came in to the hobby I was really uncomfortable with the price of the dolls, clothing, and accessories. However, I've come to realize how much I really enjoy the hobby and the prices really don't bother me at all anymore. Considering I have now been in this hobby for almost 9 years now, I just don't see myself straying from it anytime soon.

    11. Comparing when I first started in the hobby, and now, I would say it definitely went up. (As stated above) I was very uncomfortable with the price at first as well..but then you gradually spend a little more. I think once you spend a certain amount it's kind of self-conscious, like "oh..that wasn't so bad" Recently it's been around the same price since i'v only had MSD's, but i just bought an SD, which brings the price up yet again!

    12. Hmm this is an interesting topic to think on. Since currently all my dolls at home are minifee, I guess you could say that roughly they've been the same in cost, although two were purchased before the Fairyland price increase, and one was purchased during their sale, so there has been some fluctuation.
However I've just purchased and am waiting on my first SD. I went "all out" with her and bought her sleeping head as well as all the extra hands, so all together I paid about twice for her what any individual minifee cost me, so.... definitely becoming more adjusted and willing to spend more on dolls. Does that mean every doll from here on will cost more than before? I sure hope not XD
But for something really special, I am willing to go as high as I can :)

    13. regrettably my price limit with each doll would be about a thousand :o I don't go on price at all.. I either need a doll or don't. But I guess it's good because I only buy dolls I truly adore

    14. lol it keeps getting higher XD and from msd, i am for sd's now. that's how the hobby is once you are addicted its not that easy to stop in buying bjd stuffs :sweat

    15. Hmm... both? My first doll was more expensive than Lenny, but my next doll is going to be exactly 1.5x the price of my current doll @_@ I really need to start keeping tabs on my wallet haha

    16. It varies. My first doll is an $560 DOD Ducan. And then my second is an Iplehouse Limited Edition EG Claude, who was much more costly. And then my third is a seondhand Kid Delf, so I pretty much go up and down and round and round in terms of prices.

    17. It really depends on how much I want the doll. But I guess for most of us, it would be higher.

    18. My interests bounce around. I don't usually like a doll out of size or label. It's just gorgeous and I want it, I don't mind the price, I don't care if it's an SD or an MSD. So usually it's sporadic.

    19. I kind of change depending on the doll and how it looks. I mean, some prices are unrealistic for xxx type of doll for me to spend, like 400 dollars for a YOSD.. but I'd be find spending a bit on an SD :)

    20. I think it's easier to swallow a larger chunk of change when you get more into anything; it's the reasonable thing to do. In fact it occasionally worries me when people jump headfirst into something and shell out tons of money ($600+ for example) on something that they could start with at say $200.. granted I do also think you should only buy things you really want, too.
