1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Doll authors?

Oct 24, 2021

    1. Greetings!
Does anyone know why a doll artist is called an author? I'm confused.

    2. Perhaps because “author” means creator. It is a broader term than artist( or crafter or writer or whatever). It’s also commonly a legal term; somebody is an author of a work.

In english language circles, it’ll be down to preference which one is used, but they are both valid.

    3. Also in most Asian languages, author, teacher, doctor, mentor and so on are all in same kind of respect degree and sometimes use the same name or generic noun.

As English is not less passive than the other languages, it is hard to convey it. Artists could mean so many things but in western culture, Artist is more known as someone in entertainment industry, an actor or actress and so on... Acting is art, but you see, it is totally different from creating something from scratch than just using an author's work and putting that character into action. In these terms... The bjd sculptors are the authors as they are the one making the characters from scratch.

But now i wonder why they didn't use the term sculptors instead lol

    4. I have personally never come across that term before today. I have always only seen "artists" or "sculptor." However, and despite having a million years "following" and knowing about BJD, I lost interest in purchasing more around ten years ago, so maybe this is a more recent term. Although, I still look at the new section on here, I don't follow BJD related news anywhere else (because of the s-e-x related stuff that gets thrown in with the tag as it may/not be obvious).

Author seems like a weird term to me, but again, I have never come across it. I mostly only look at English "company" websites and rarely go for looking at anything else, so maybe only single artists or sculptors use that term?

    5. I've never seen a doll artist/maker referred to as 'author' before... Could it simply be a mistranslation...?

For example, in Chinese, 'author' is 作者 which if translated literally would be 'make' (作) and 'person' (者).

    6. Yeah I think it is the same meaning as designer, creator, artist. Though it is confusing.

    7. Well, that makes sense! Someone is making a person, or a doll is like a person. Thanks for that!

I've seen the term when I look at doll artists from Ukraine and Russia.

Yes, sculptors fits better. But I do agree that sculptors deserve respect for what they do because it is amazing!

Well, I'm getting the feeling from all the responses that it could be a translated term that is a little off. I've seen it when looking at Russian and Ukrainian websites.

Making the characters certainly fits the meaning, I think.

    8. I’ve never seen a doll artist called an author. My best guess would be that wherever you read that, it was a translation from an artist’s native tongue.
