1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Doll Companies' Selling Tactics: Does it influence your buying decision?

Mar 8, 2008

    1. I guess it depends on the situation. In my case, well let's say that I have a tight budget. And when I say tight, it's really tight.:sweat Currently, I would love to find a tan doll to my liking. But since they're not exactly cheap, it's clear that I will probably never buy it directly from the compagny. And since most of them don't do the tan skin anymore, so they are kind of discontinued from the start to me. I'm a patient person, I can wait as long as it take me to find my grail doll. So no, I would probably not buy them if they are suddently discontinued, unless it's an artist doll and I know that it would not be found easily on the net again.

    2. It usually doesn't affect me at all. I did have plans to get a sweater from a company, and they suddenly discontinued it. The company discontinued a few things from a few years ago, but I see them coming back into circulation just now. Maybe that sweater will be available in a few years, but will I still want it?

I'd still buy from them because I haven't seen them do this with their dolls. When I saved for my doll, the doll was still there when I could afford it.

This is a reason why - as much as I would love to buy from them - I'm uneasy about buying from distributors. It could be there one week, and gone the next. I had this issue with my second doll. I had wanted to go through a distributor because it wouldn't take so long to arrive, but by the time I finished saving, the doll wasn't available. I wish that distributors were a little more informative when it came to when they were going to get dolls back in stock.

    3. The unpredictable availability of dolls saves me a lot of money. It takes me months to decide if I like a doll--I have to look at company photos, then owner pictures, then think about it...so when I buy limiteds, its usually after 2 or 3 years on the secondary market, when everyone else is trading them in for something new. This is good for me, as I get to buy neat things for less money, but not so great for the companies who would get my money directly if they kept stuff on the shelf for ages. But from the doll companies' point of view, they are doing fine without my snaillike buying habits.

    4. Usually no. I will occasionally fall victim to an event, but only if I wanted a doll from that company anyway. Same with LE's...I don't buy LE's because they're SUPER-RARE AND SPESHUL!!! I get them because I'd want that doll regardless of it's "status". I don't generally even know what Soom's monthly dolls are until they start arriving at peoples homes XD

This year however Little Monica's banners on every page of DOA caused me to fall for not one, but two of their dolls - Audrey and Kliff - both of which I now have, and neither of which I'd even be aware of if not for those banners. I definitely count that as a selling tactic. In my case a successful one XD

    5. Yes! I am a sucker for a pretty limited edition!

At the same time Volks- whose dolls I love, are so difficult to actually buy from and require such large amounts of money on short notice that I hardly buy from them at all.

Crobidoll and their purdy, purdy LEs are also things I ignore because there is such a minuscule chance of actually getting one that I've never deemed it worth it to try.

Soom also- I love the dolls but the amount of money required means I don't buy all that many no matter how much I like them.

So I'm more likely to buy if I have some advance notice, the actual opportunity to buy one, and layaway-the longer the better.
