Doll couples - matching aesthetics important?

Oct 14, 2014

1. Wow, thank you all for your replies, seems like I'm not the only one enjoying this topic! :) (also, I'm really sorry for butchering all your quotes, tried to fit it into one post ^^; )

I have actually found a match for my Lucas, and it turned out to be a sculpt I'd looked at before but hadn't considered. Since I wasn't sure about what the partner character should be like I kind of let the sculpt decide, and I'm feeling good about this one - better than I'd thought! :whee:

It seems a lot of you had the characters before finding the sculpt, as was also the case with my first "partner-doll". That seems to make things easier actually, since as many of you write it makes it matter less if they fit together as long as the individual dolls fit their characters.

I myself have found that I'll prefer ones that at least have somewhat similar aesthetics (as CloakedSchemer said, maybe not a Soom and a Dollfie Dream), heights and scale when it comes to couples, but as some of you have pointed out, in real life we all look different and there are lots of unexpected real couples as well :)

That's how I felt with the doll I found (Ringdoll Norman Light 2.0), I really liked him, but felt he wouldn't match my Lucas. I still have plans for getting him by "broadening" my collection, but as another character.

Aww, it sounds so cute with three little brothers! ^^

I like looking at the blank sculpts themelves, but faceups can really influence looks in different ways!

Thanks Linda :)
They look really good together, same-company couples have a head start for matching ;)

They really look good together! Nothing I'd ever say looks strange, since it does seem to be a chemistry between them here :)

They are totally cute together! :D
Their facial features seems to be roughly the same size, I think that contributes ^^
And I agree with the chemistry, or as galatia9 said, a spark when you put them together.

They make such a good couple! (but then I am biased, Chrom is my longest-standing favorite sculpts :sweat)
My characters also develop through how they look, it makes it easier to "get a feel" for them i think.

2. ~ If you are looking to get a partner for one of your dolls, how important is it for you that the aesthetics of the two go together?
It's not actually important for me at all! xD I have a suited and booted Resinsoul guy with a colourful Obitsu girl and a beefy Dollzone dude with a lanky frail guy.

~ How do you decide if they do or don't?
I'd say the type of style - realistic sculpting, anime sculpting, size proportions.

~ If they don't - do you keep looking or decide to try to make it work?
I really don't try to make anything match or work. My dolls are all very distinct from one another.

~ Have you ever successfully found a match for a doll that you're completely happy with?
I'm very happy with all of my couples as they are :)

3. I think its kinda important for my dolls as a couple to kinda match. When I look at them I kinda want to feel like the would go together. My one friend makes the joke that she wants her dollies to look like they were made for each other :P

4. Doll Couples - Mesureaments

I plan to buy my SID Aria as soon as I can do it. I've been looking for her prince charming for long. Now I finally found it: Idealian Hyperon. He is perfect in every way and, especially, seems perfect for the Aria that I will compose.
But in the midst of my happiness I did find one problem, maybe it's a big problem. Hyperon is too big. If the EID male dolls are already high relative to SID dolls female, imagine a idealian. And the SID woman also have a more delicate body that EID woman.
Using Comparison Heaven I could see my dilemma as well.
Although I like the most big guys. But still do not know if Hyperon and Aria together would be more strange than sexy.

What do you think?

5. If you are looking to get a partner for one of your dolls, how important is it for you that the aesthetics of the two go together?
Very important, especially style and proportion. If one's realistic and the other stylized, or if one has a small head and the other a big head, I don't like the combination.
How do you decide if they do or don't?
I like them to have similar sculpting styles-- both rounded/realistic, or both angular/stylized, or whatever. I don't want the heights or proportions to be drastically different. And some dolls just don't have chemistry together, for some reason.
If they don't - do you keep looking or decide to try to make it work?
I keep looking. I've been trying to find the right guy for one of my girls for years!
Have you ever successfully found a match for a doll that you're completely happy with?
For some reason, the planned matches hardly ever work out, but I've had a few happy accidents. :)

6. If you are looking to get a partner for one of your dolls, how important is it for you that the aesthetics of the two go together?
I am new at this but wanted a fellow for my Iplehouse Eva. I wanted an IP so they would go well together. The question was which one and which size?

~ How do you decide if they do or don't?
All I could do was look at pics and decide who I liked that was the size I wanted and looked old enough for her.

~ If they don't - do you keep looking or decide to try to make it work?
The fellow I selected is wonderful with her. It not, I would have kept looking.

And bonus if you want to answer it:
~ Have you ever successfully found a match for a doll that you're completely happy with?

Yes, I am very happy with the match.

Aargh, it must be just me but I having a very hard time typing posts on this site.

7. ~ If you are looking to get a partner for one of your dolls, how important is it for you that the aesthetics of the two go together?
It isn't absolutely required that they have a similar aesthetic in my opinion, they just need to be able to compliment each other... Though thinking about what I just said.... I suppose the aesthetic does matter quite a bit when trying to find one of my dolls a partner..

~ How do you decide if they do or don't?

I don't actually decide anymore... It might sound odd... But I just let my dolls choose who they want as their partner... My reasoning behind doing this is because the last time I tried to choose a partner, my boy absolutely did NO want anything to do with this doll... And he made it blatantly clear that he was not happy, and no matter how I tried, he simply would not posed with the other..

~ If they don't - do you keep looking or decide to try to make it work?

As I said, it was clear that my choice was not going to work, so I sold the doll and let him be a lone wolf for a while... That certainly didn't last long though..

~ Have you ever successfully found a match for a doll that you're completely happy with?
After letting my boy be for a while, my gf brought her new boy in to the picture, and suddenly everything was sunshine and daisies again... I kid you not, he was all sorts of fine with posing with this new boy. Any poses, all the poses, it was clear that this was his match... This muscular, clown faced boy, who was his total opposite in terms of looks, was 'the one' for him. And I'm perfectly happy with this, they're just adorable together.

8. PriscilaVi I actually kind of like the height difference between the Idealian and SID woman! They still fit proportionally-- clearly they're both adults, she's just a bit short next to him. But that's a thing you see all over the place in the real world-- I'm short myself, and often surrounded by quite tall people, so I never think it's odd-looking when two dolls who look to be about the same age have a real height difference. They look lovely next to each other, so unless that height difference really bothers you, I don't think it should be a problem.

~ If you are looking to get a partner for one of your dolls, how important is it for you that the aesthetics of the two go together?

For me it's important if the dolls in question are romantically linked or blood relations, though it doesn't bother me to think of an overall group being mismatched. So I would want the aesthetics to be a good match if I was seeking a partner for a doll (though for me, since Vince isn't going to have a romantic partner, but dolls I plan to get in the future will, in my case it's more a case of shopping around to find a company that offers the right sculpts for both halves of a couple)

~ How do you decide if they do or don't?

Just looking at them side by side? I mean, obviously if they come from the same company it makes things easy, but there are companies who 'play nicely together', aesthetics-wise. So research, looking at a lot of owner photos. It would especially help if someone I knew locally had a doll I was considering. My sister is in the process of looking for the right match for her girl, and now that her doll has high heel feet, she needs a taller boy than one from the same company, and she's found seeing dolls at meetups is a real help, especially as someone locally has a doll with the same body whose boyfriend is from another company with just the right height difference, and she was able to see how well they matched, and to hold her girl up next to other boys from other companies as well, either at meets or at conventions.

~ If they don't - do you keep looking or decide to try to make it work?

I don't think I'd plunk the money down if I couldn't be sure beforehand. It tends to take me long enough to save up for a big purchase, so I have a lot of time to do a lot of research.

9. Anneko In fact, the difference in height between the two non bothers me at all. I even like, gives the impression that he will protect her in any situation :)
I really wanted the opinion of others and see if the impression I had was shared by anyone besides me.
I fell in love with Aria by chance. Hyperon is the guy that was on my mind all the time. And I can not imagine the two apart.

If you are looking to get a partner for one of your dolls, how important is it for you that the aesthetics of the two go together?

I always look for aesthetic compatibility. Normally dolls from the same shop combine well, especially if the hyperrealism is concerned. I also believe that compatibility is something somewhat uncertain and you just discovering by chance. Me has always been so.

How do you decide if they do or don't?
Usually I've got couples ready in my head. Or simply can look at them and see compatibility.
I always like to stare at the dolls that are on my wish list. I end up creating intimacy with them and trace their possible personalities according to the feelings pass me his features. Drawn personalities, combination of couples becomes natural.
I'm no hurry, things just happen.

If they don't - do you keep looking or decide to try to make it work?
Maybe I can try a little and see if I get used to them together. This may work or not. I had times when I always looked for some dolls and not thought anything about them together, but after realizing the compatibility of personality could not imagine them apart.
Also there have been times when I've had a perfect couple, but then appeared someone better and I just did not know what to do with who left. It's sad, but it happens even with the dolls :(

Have you ever successfully found a match for a doll that you're completely happy with?
Yes! I found really good pairs. But what makes me happy is that I found really perfect couples. And they look so happy as I am.

10. It does-- and I can see her leaning her head on his chest with his arms around her, that would look very cute.

11. ~ If you are looking to get a partner for one of your dolls, how important is it for you that the aesthetics of the two go together?
In terms of heights, I usually see that the female dolls are slightly shorter if they are from the same line, but I prefer that both dolls are same heights. I do not think female should be always shorter than male. I thought about getting the other half of the couple from the same line, but I would think that they would look more like a siblings instead of couple.

~ How do you decide if they do or don't?
I prefer they are different in sculpt, but looks good together just like real life couples.

~ If they don't - do you keep looking or decide to try to make it work?
If this happens, I would make them either as sibling or cousin, etc. I think roles can be changed. I don't think you can force to make something that does not work in such case.

~ Have you ever successfully found a match for a doll that you're completely happy with?

Not yet, still on a lookout.

12. Since all of my dolls inhabit the same "universe" (the world of the stories I am writing), they all need to look right next to each other, with regards to size and general aesthetic style. That said, I prefer realistic, although I also like some slightly stylized sculpts, such as Dollshe Hound.

For couples especially, they most definitely have to "fit" both as to scale and to style. As an example, here's one of my romantic couples - Thomas (5th Motif Venitu) and Leonore (Soom Super Gem Onyx). I love how these two look together!

13. I have one "couple", Doll Chateau Christina and Dolores. They look great together. They both have the extra joints in their wrists and ankles. I removed the extra neck joints in both dolls. Not only do I like it better, but I want them matching. I also I used the same colors in their face ups.

So now I am looking at buying an IH EID Asa, and I am faced with what for me is a huge problem. Do I really NEED to get her an EID man or can she shack up with Ringdolls Lucifer or Norman. Ultimately I want an Ashanti from IH too so most likely all those plastic people will be participating in some sort of inappropriate lovefest (not the Doll Chateaus. They are excusive). But I have a matching set problem for sure.

14. I need a partner for my Koko.
She's so lonely. everyone has someone but she's lonely.
And will still be the odd one out when all my new dolls come in lol.
I dont have a name for my couple in this pic but you can see koko looking like, find me someone! :'(

15. Out of curiosity does anyone have suggestions for a sculpt for a partner for a Nobledolls Radicelle?? :)

16. I think it's important. I would want my couples to look more or less the same (i.e. realistic sculpt with realistic sculpt or non realistic sculpt and non realistic sculpt). It's just me I think >< I'm also very picky with bodies as well as height difference (between all my dolls). I keep my crew range below 65cm so they won't look out of proportion next to each other.. The 65 already sticks out like a sore thumb, but it's bearable. But just that I don't think I'll be able to shell a Dia head on a body that's 63cm :(

17. What about head size? I want to order another doll for my upcoming 5stardoll Becca, but her head is 22.5 cm! The head I want for her male partner is 21.5 cm. Anyone notice a crazy difference between head sizes? Is it a big deal?

18. If you are looking to get a partner for one of your dolls, how important is it for you that the aesthetics of the two go together?
This is actually all about the problem I'm having right now. The aesthetics is the most important thing for me, as my main aim is to keep it looking realistic. Too big of a differences between the sculpts would make me twitch every time I looked at them, so it wouldn't work. With aesthetics I mean proportions and styles - for instance, my Souldolls would never work together with my Resinsouls or even my Fairyland, since they all have completely different aesthetics. Souldoll's heads are small and more in proportion to their body; Resinsoul have a gigantic head compared to their body plus their features are more doll-like with big eyes and such; Fairyland is like a mixture where the body is in perfect proportion, but the head is too big and despite not being as dolly as the Resinsouls, they still are too dolly for my Souldolls. I had planned a Zaoll Ramie for my Souldoll Vito Lester, but her face is too broad to fit him, so I'm back on square one, after over a year of planning :(

How do you decide if they do or don't?
I try to get hold of good reference photos, so I can compare my sculpts to the ones I'm thinking about. Though this is only the case if my main reason of getting the sculpt is to be a partner to a doll I already have, otherwise I'm not that concerned about fitting together.

If they don't - do you keep looking or decide to try to make it work?

I keep looking. I've got too much to take into consideration when I'm making photostories and editing photos and getting clothes and props and stuff for my dolls that really I don't have time to also edit or work around proportions that don't match.

Have you ever successfully found a match for a doll that you're completely happy with?
Well, my Resinsouls match with their likes, and my Souldoll Vito works great with my Soulkid. The search for the perfect match for my Lester will continue!

19. This question is what I've been thinking about recently since I want to find William a suitable partner.

~ If you are looking to get a partner for one of your dolls, how important is it for you that the aesthetics of the two go together?
This is pretty important for me. They absolutely need to be the same scale and have similar aesthetics (ex: realistic with realistic).

~ How do you decide if they do or don't?
Scale wise is pretty simple. I know that I would need to get another 1/4 sized doll. However, since I'm new to BJDs, I was planning on just getting another Mystic Kids since I know that will work aesthetic wise. Also, my doll is 46 cm and I want someone who is either the same size or taller than him. If I get it from a different company that is also something I would have to look out for.

~ If they don't - do you keep looking or decide to try to make it work?
I would keep looking. I'm not going to shell out $200+ for something that I am not absolutely sure about. :)

20. If you are looking to get a partner for one of your dolls, how important is it for you that the aesthetics of the two go together?
I would say that an aesthetic match is fairly important for me. I wouldn't put a more stylized doll with a more realistic one. More realistic faces like those from Souldoll, Dollmore, IMPL and Iplehouse would not, in my opinion, go with stylized or doll-ish faces from Resinsoul, Fairyland or IslandDoll. Head and hand size is a big consideration for me. I really wouldn't want to see a doll with a proportionally huge head paired with a doll that has a more realistically proportioned head, and I also like my boys' hands to be larger than my girls' hands. Size and height are also considerations, as I want the size and height differences between the partners to be realistic and to match up reasonably well to what I have in mind for the characters the dolls represent.

How do you decide if they do or don't?
I look at reference photos, particularly if someone already has dolls in the pairing I have in mind. I also study the doll measurements a lot, and I sometimes even look at photos of real human couples to see real-life variations in size/height to determine if what I have in mind is within the realm of reasonable possibility.

If they don't - do you keep looking or decide to try to make it work?
Keep looking. I wouldn't pay $200-$700 for a sculpt I didn't want or like.

Have you ever successfully found a match for a doll that you're completely happy with?
Absolutely! I have a number of dolly couples that I'm totally happy with. :)
* Gabriel (IMPL Idol Gnaeus) and Élise (Dollmore Model F Ipsae)*
* Aubrey (IMPL Idol Tony) and Zach (IMPL Idol Gnaeus)
* Scarlett (Migidoll Jean on Souldoll Zenith body) and Noé (Dollmore Model M Kyle Reese)
* Tyler (Resinsoul Mai) and Sini (Resinsoul Mei) -- although these two are going to be reshelled
*
Reid (Souldoll Vito Lester) and Fiona (Zaoll Luv)

Some of my doll characters also have children and/or siblings, so aesthetics were important in those choices as well.
