Doll Fashion Trends?

Jul 26, 2007

    1. I do not actually mind the style in which people dress their dolls, thats their own choice.

but when I first got in touch with BJD's I did have a hard time on some dollsites to see the differance between the girl, and the more femmy guys in the main display pages. like at the DIM site, for a long time just looking at the faces I was convinced that rain was a girl........... turns out its a boy lol

    2. I think all that matters is that you make your doll what it is individually to you, and what you like :).

I like goth! So a lot of mine show this. I also like ancient traditional costume from China, and Japanese kimono etc. So, sometimes fusion is needed.
I like punk style, I like suits.
The best thing to do? Buy more clothing xD.
The beauty of these dolls is that they are so fun to change.

    3. I *love* goth clothes, but I wouldn't necessarily put them on my doll. I'd put them on me, and have my doll be like wearing a fairy princess outfit. But in the actual shop pages, if there's no picture of the naked body, I'm sick of seeing a doll in a long wig and a loose shirt with a jacket that covers up any sort of bust it might have and having to GUESS whether it's a bishonen or a really cute girl. It took me a good while to realise that you could switch/combine heads with different bodies and I got really mad a couple times over how the guy bodies had all the good heads.

Also, I used to extremely dislike fur wigs, but I think they've grown on me after seeing the alternatives, which would be giving my ordinarily mostly short haired guy dolls basically a big set of extensions. Some of my character types just work better with short hair.

    4. I really like the victorian aspects of Lolita and when making costumes I look at historical drawings to make up the design. Dolls have been dressing 'dolly' for the past 200 years or more. I wouldn't mind seeing more cyber goth, and or modern things but I will always love the gothloli movement, I really like what it stands for. I wouldn't mind dressing my doll up like a ballerina, or like a kitty, I don't mind all of the emo dress but I really don't care for it at all. I just don't think it is as pretty and doesn't catch my interest. I dress my doll in smaller versions of my clothes. I have only just got into BJD's but I have been dressing Victorian/lolita for the past two years.

    5. I know what your saying about Rain. I wanted him for a long time thinking that he was a she. I thought that was the cutest girl on the sight...(sigh)

    6. I like elegant evening and high fashion for my girls but I haven't been sewing long enough to be very good at those styles. I am still learning a lot. I also want to see some fun styles that are not goth , but maybe with a belt or boots could be a more modern interpretation of goth as well as punk.

    7. I think I'm opposed to my boys being called 'emo'

Emo is NOT a clothing style, a hair style, shoe size or anything having to do with fashion. If you see a boy or girl wearing all black with lip rings and whatever else, it does not mean they are 'emo'

The term emo comes from emotional, something that was originally used to describe OVERLY emotional rock bands, singers, people... so on and so forth.

I know a kid who fits the description of an 'emo kid' and he wears polo shirts and khaki's. So I guess as far as the 'trend' goes, I get a bit annoyed when people say "OH IM DRESSING MY BOY LIKE AN EMO KID"

because really, clothing cannot be emotional to the extent of labeling someone.

Punk - Goth - Emo... there are HUGE differences between meanings. Punk and Goth are clothing styles AND lifestyles. Emo is just a lifestyle. I just hope the trend of people calling EVERYTHING emo ends soon.

    8. I've noticed online lately with pictures I've seen of others dolls or those that I saw at my first meet yesterday that the whole goth/leather/chains/punk look is really in. that and goth loli/EGL are really big lately.

I personally dont like a lot of that. I think some EGL is sweet but other than that, I like dressing Helena is comfy clothes; cute skirts and soft tops. I only have one dark piece of clothing for her and thats her formal dress (one thats a miniature version of one I'd worn for a formal I attended based off of the design from one of MCR's videos).

But the fashion ones doll wears is merely just a representation of both the doll's personality and their owner's personality, at least thats how I see it.

    9. Off topic a bit, but could you PM me with what video it was and maybe a picture of the dress?? I'm a huge MCR fan. lol.

    10. I personally hardly notices any trends, so my doll would just wear whatever I feel like her having on. But I do agree with a lot of people here that a doll's fashion is a representation of what suits the doll more and what the owner's taste is. So, unless the owner is fashionably hip and trendy, I don't think the doll will have much say in the clothing style they're put in~

    11. It's not likely to end soon. It's become PUNK/GOTH/EMO as a label all together where ever you look and none of those three are related.

Also, actually there is a certain kind of style-trend that is considered "Emo" fashion-wise. It tends to involve dark hair with longer bangs, straight-legged pants, black Converse chucks, and (more often then not) something vintage (Ragstock). I've seen it listed as a fashion in many publications, so I think you are out of luck with regard to separating it from Punk & Goth.

I think it's a term that is going to be around with regard to this style trend (just like Grunge) as long as the style is being referenced.

    12. I love the punk look/goth look, and i DO want to get my girl those big black SandM boots! Mostly coz ive always wanted a pair myself but will never have the guts to wear them :sweat

The problem is, my girl isnt a punk. She likes jeans and tshirts and hoodies. And i feel rather sad, coz it seems rather boring compared to all the wonderful things she could be wearing :( But thats who she is! Shes casual and very low-key! I might get her one modern "going out in the evening" outfit but thats probably about it

    13. i like sometimes buy new dress , but not for fashion . i dont care of fashion ...

    14. Something I'd like to see more in the gallery are clothes that fashion-conscious mallrats in my area would wear.
Or you can show me a scene kid doll. That'd make my day ha ha
      Skinny jeans! Where are they!?

    15. Well, I am just throwing this out there, and I really hope it doesn't seem like I'm attacking you because I'm not, but I think because of the mass majority that calls the style of clothing "emo" does is a sense make "emo" a fashion trend. Now, I understand completely that emo comes from extremely emotional bands , and honestly I think that "emo" is the wrong label for the sort of clothing, but I mean, how many people would know exactly what I am talking about if I mention "emo" clothing? it is a certain style definitely, somewhere between punk and goth I think, but the original word has been taken out of context now. I know plenty of real people who dress "emo" because the clothing style trend is popular (and theres nothing wrong with popular clothing trends) but are nothing like and have no interest in the original concept of the word "emo." I think that currently the meaning of the word "emo" has been boiled down to an empty phrase that is just used so we dont have to say things like "oh, that style where blah blah blah." so I guess its a label, but a badly and overused label.
And I hope the trend of calling everything "emo" ends soon too lol.

    16. I try to let my kids decide what they like themselves*nutcase*
like how one of my boys likes very plain clothes and dull colors because it reflects hes personality he being withdrawn and not really caring hmm.. so wouldn't we be asking why some types of personalities are trendy? but that would be mean to say that you hate someones kids personality.. I'd say them fight'in words

I like "emo" clothes and thats the kind of stuff I wear, doesent mean that my boy has to wear it too.;)

    17. Fad on the horizon: Recently I'm seeing a lot of dolls that are being labelled 'steampunk'. And for many of them, I reeeeeally don't think that they have much of an idea of what steampunk actually looks like. -_- But, part of the fun of a trend/craze is seeing how a dictated fashion-formula gets appropriated, violated, enhanced, blended, etc. etc. as a thousand different minds re-interpret it. For purists, this is also the source of the irritation: For example, remember when the grunge look used to be made of real actual used grubby $5 clothes, until one day there were $500 ripped sweatshirts on the cover of Vogue? :doh Sometimes, it's hard not to laugh at what happens to Styles when they turn into Fashions.

It's true that when talking to the mainstream, & referring to a subculture, you have to use the vocabulary they'll understand, or else they won't know what you're talking about. I have this very young, feisty deathrocker-chick friend (just over half my age) who is on a constant crusade to scold all the strangers who call her a goth.... she launches into long explanations about how it's death-rock, dammit, and it's not the same thing as goth, and here's why... "Sylvie," I said to her one day, "you're really asking a lot of these people if you expect them to care. They see a Spooky Chick, and you're asking them to stuff you into an even smaller pigeonhole than that? Save your breath." She was furious with me for about 24 hours; after that, suddenly she seemed to relax about scolding strangers.

For all you emos out there who hate being called goths, & vice-versa, I heartily hope your struggle ends someday. ^^

Well, someday you may have another doll, who WILL wear those S&M boots! You can save that shopping trip to DollHeart for when she arrives. ^^ But your girl now should wear what she seems to 'like'. I have discovered that if your doll really doesn't have it in him, to wear the things YOU want, he just won't do it. You'd think that inanimate objects wouldn't have such a say in the matter, would you? I buy nice dress shoes for my Yukinojo, and they look perfectly nice on him, but then he won't wear them. I can't describe the exact phenomenon-- but when I dress him up nicely and put those shoes on him, his inanimate face manages to look as uncomfortable as a boy putting on his first suit to go to church. ;; All he'll wear is big killer skullcrusher boots, and that's the kind of shoes that look happy on him, so that's what he wears.

Style-wise, I don't stick to any one formula-- over the decades, I've appropriated lots of different styles and kneaded my own into it-- and most of my dolls don't, either. We all wear what looks like fun when it's placed together. The resulting mishmash of punk-hippie-everyday-goth-deathrock-fetish-headbanger-uniform-dressup is, umm, eclectic at best & unfocussed at worst. XD

    18. JennyNemesis:

I completely agree with you on how styles turn into fashions. Especially the grunge look. I haven't seen alot of grunge as far as dolls are concerned though, except for one of my friends who only dresses his doll in his old ripped clothes... haha.

    19. I'm surprised that we don't see more dolls in "vintage" looks. I don't often see dolls dressed as hippies, or in rockabilly swing, or 20's flapper garb. All of these would be really cute and stylish. :fangirl:

*runs off to draw up design of MSD sized flapper dress*

    20. I agree with what you said, wholeheartedly!:)
