Doll Fashion Trends?

Jul 26, 2007

    1. I agree. But I think some of this is based on the lack of availability of these fashions. Mind you, if I happened to come across anything rockabilly I would be :D:D:D.

How do you feel about doll fashion trends?
I feel the same way about doll fashion trends than I do human fashion trends. There are always going to be 'fads' (fluro trackies anyone?) filtered down from high fashion which some people will find ludicrous. Personally, I like to take aspects from certain trends and make them my own. The same with my dolls.

The lolitas, the girly boys, the emo kids? Is there too much of such, or is there something more you want to see?
As long as it's done tastefully and not mashed together, I won't dislike it but then again it really doesn't matter what I think. People will dress their dolls however they want regardless of what anyone thinks. The whole point with fashion trends is that there are going to be 'too' much but then again, what is considered 'too' much? Besides, people bring their own interpretations of a certain style so not everything will be the same and, as long as that remains the same, I won't get sick of it. Personally, I would like to see some avant-guard or haute couture styled BJDs, also maybe some indie-punk or art inspired pieces.

    2. When I go to Dolpa there is an amazing number of "fru fru" dresses in pastels. I'd love to see more jewel tones and there were a few, but not a lot there at the show. Hopefully, since they sold out SO quickly (in the first five minutes) I will see them at other shows. If not, I am sure I will find other outfits I enjoy equally as much.

I think dolls are about "imagination". I like buying outfits that are outside the realm of my imagination, that I have never seen or contemplated before. The look is irrelevant if I think that would add an interesting dimension to my doll's wardrobe. At the same time, it has to be "quality". For instance, I like Lolita looks done well and well enough to be comparable to Baby the Stars Shine Bright. That is a high standard and it would require a lot of fabric and detailing, but I'd rather spend more on an outfit done well than less on a few mediocre outfits that do nothing to push my imagination.

At the same time, I need to see that quality. I don't believe "expensive" is generally better or "cheap" is generally worse. I need to see value for the money.

    3. Initially there was the Lolitas..
I saw/see lots of lolita-styles in this hobby.. Not really sure how long it's been there, but BTSSB's clothing line have somehow entered the dolling world..
Then came Marie Antoinette, and now steampunk!

Would love to see more antiquey styles! :aheartbea

    4. I know it's currently trendy, but I really cannot stand crosses, skulls and platform shoes/boots for my guys. I see perfect clothes except for the crosses or skulls on them and I refuse to purchase them. I wanted to get a beautiful burgundy leather outfit for Shuichi but the vest had a skull with horns on the back of it so I didn't get it.

I got some Yo boy clothes by Another Space and I've had to cover the skulls with cute buttons because they're annoying to me. Boy clothes are hard to find for Yos so I had to suck it up, get the pieces and fix them some way. Why can't the companies pin the skulls and crosses on separately?

My Shuichi only wears platforms when he's wearing his JPop stagewear because he cannot stand in them. Basic tennies are the best.

    5. I think everything looks too costume. I want something realistic, so that my doll can dress like me. Some of the costumes are fun, but I don't see enough of trends pertaining to people. For instance, I'm looking for skinny jeans for my SD16 girl. Where can you find that? Get what I'm saying?

    6. it is kinda hard to find 'manly' dolls for a start. most molds are 'ladyboys' and most of the manly molds i've come across have either been limited edition or damned ugly. so i think that is a trend in itself.

as for the whole emo/lolita/ladyboy/etc. thing, well...that's the way the world is now. 70% of teenagers i see on a day to day basis dress in an 'emo' style. fashion changes; in a few year's time, people will be changing their dolls' clothes for the next in-thing. just the way things are.

it doesn't particularly bother me. i like ladyboys. LOL.

    7. I know where Emo, Punk, and Goth all came from, and don't call people themselves Emo Punk or Goth unless I really know them. But I don't think it's pushing it to call a doll's style of dress Emo or Goth, because Emos and Goths DO have a distinct fashion style. You don't have to listen to Siouxsie to dress Goth.

    8. You'd think military outfits would be easier to find, but no. I don't mean the fantasy-military/rock star outfits some sites have with knee-high lace-up platform boots, but actual cammies and combat boots. I can understand doll clothing having a fantasy bend to it, but given a lot of characters have some sort of soldier or military background, one might think companies would make clothing for it.

    9. They'll catch on. As soon as more people started having steampunk characters, Companies started coming out with more steampunk-esque outfits. I think they DO pay attention to what kind of characters we create, and if the demand is high enough, they'll make outfits to suit those characters.

    10. I totally agree with those who mentioned wanting to see more classy vintage clothes. I love so many eras that were "before my time" from Regency on up to 50's circle skirts, and lots in between. Currently I dress Lita in whatever I can sew, I am learning, and am not that great at it yet.
If I knew how, I would totally dress her in Audrey Hepburn style :D.

Ah, no time to actually study fashion and follow all the "rules" of any particular style, so I end up doing what I do in real life. Taking whatever I like and throwing it together. And just for the record, yes I do dress my dolls in things I like but would never be able to get away with. (1/4 of a century old and too voluptuous XD)

    11. I think it's hard to buy....you know, "normal" shoes for men.
The most shoes floating around are big boots / "platform" shoes and so on...nice black, normal shoes, fitting to a suit -> nearly impossible D:
And when I found one, they're ugly...or doesn't fit my SD Boy D:

The most stuff floating around are steampunk/emo/goth for the Boys and Gothic-Lolita/Princess clothes for our Girls D: Here in Germany, where BJDs are getting a little bit popular now in Anime/Manga communities, all boys and girls look the same. And the most owners even buy the same doll (mostly Dollzones MO...sometimes the HID =_=)

    12. Pygmalion Complex: I hope you're right. I hope I'm not the only one out there asking for military clothing and the companies listen. In the meantime, I suppose that's what commissioners are for.

    13. i'd love to see cutesy baby clothes for YO sized boys- it's all girls clothes or the boys are a bit gothy with skulls etc.I don't want that for my Leeke D, I want him in baby gro's, dungarees and things like that. I'd also love to have rattles and a crib for him or a pushchair.

As for my older ones, I'd like to have Dr Marten sort of boots (the only ones I have seen were sold out) and flats for girls. Normal clothes like skinny jeans, leggings, scarves. And maybe goggles for the steampunk look I want for Ducan when he arrives, that don't cost the earth.

Less gothic stuff with crosses on it and less platform boots as looking through the galleries here it doesn't seem many of us are into that.

    14. Sure, there are some trends that are more popular...just like in real life. There is definately a surplus of punk and femmy boys, and loli girls...but hey, who are we to say they're not allowed anymore?

I don't see a problem with it at all. Dress your dolls in what you (and they) like, it shouldn't matter what other people think. If they don't approve of their clothing, well then they should go find a different thread.

SeNii dresses in whatever he wishes (from the little he has available so far that is), he doesn't give a care in the world about how even I'll take to it. If I came home one day and he was wearing a pink, fluffy bunny rabbit suit with little rhinestones all over it (my, what an image that conjures O_O )...I'd probably have a stroke, but besides that I'd learn to deal with it. It's not like he's not my SeNii in it ^^

EDIT:: I also wouldn't mind seeing a few more pairs of boots/shoes that aren't completely covered in chains/crosses...hell, I love that stuff (I wear it in real life) but I'd like more diversity ^^ Also...I agree with Absynthe, I'd love to see some cutesy little kid clothes for the tinies~I just eat that stuff up XD

    15. Yes! My Souldoll Hye is going to be one of my Dark Angel characters, Ana. As an X4 from Manticore, I want her in the grey camo pants and jacket the original Dark Angel characters wore in season 2, but can I find them? Nope.

I hope they will come out with a range of camo clothes, but I also hope they won't have glitter or stars or skulls on them. I just want plain camo pants!

    16. I see a lot of people jumping on the OP for saying the clothing market is a little biased to the goth/punk/emo/girly boy scene, and saying that other stuff is available.

      But I have to agree.

Sure, if you hunt, you can find what ever you want. But if you have to hunt, then it's not the main trend, and that's the point being made.

I don't see a real issue with the current trend of gothy/emo/punk time, but honestly, that's because that's what I'm into myself, and have been for a long time. In real people, and doll clothes, it just makes what I like more available to me and in a larger variety of said styles.

However, especially with the smaller dolls (I'm talking tinys), it's really hard to find anything outside of the trends, because companies and individual makers alike all cater to the current market. It would be a bad business move to do other wise.

But yeah. There is a huge trend right now with the goth/emo/punk. It's cool, I like it. Sure, there's a lot of other stuff out there if you hunt. But you have to hunt. And if you still can't find what you want, commissioning works well. Some times you can find people who do requests to practice before they start selling. So, you can still beat the trends if you don't like them.

    17. I don't mind the current doll fashion. I prefer more of the casual clothing such as jeans and classy clothing. Occasionally, I'll come to admire the Gothic and emo styles when I see a random gallery post. I like the Iplehouse company for selling the normal clothes since I'm into the fashion and all.

    18. Ditto. I was looking for green camo pants and a green tank top for a Hye. Not complicated, nothing outrageous, but can I find them? Nope.

Same for boots. I've been trying to find combat boots that aren't platforms and the only ones that even come close are sold out and have been for months. :vein

    19. I think I'm going to be forced to make some of my own, which is annoying because a) I suck at making pants and b) good camo material is hard to get hold of now our army surplus shop has gone.

As for combat boots, I was going to make do with these from Dollmore, but I'm going to wait for another group order before I get them, just because shipping is going to cripple me! I need two pairs of MSD-sized boots too, but those are sold out.

    20. Those Dollmore boots look really good. I could do with those. No platforms, crosses or glittery bits.

As for the camo material, the Hancock fabrics near me has a fairly decent selection (it may be because I'm reasonably close to a military base). The patterns are a little big for doll clothing, but if I had to make do I could. Are you looking for clothing in a particular camo print (desert, digital, jungle)?
