Doll Fashion Trends?

Jul 26, 2007

    1. I have and always will dress my dolls how I see them personality wise. I tried baby doll look on my newest and she wasn't having it. Total rock chick. I see that for all mine and Although I love the new Steam Punk look it will have to suit the doll, not other way around.

    2. Well my boy was supposed to be leather and big boots clad, according to the character he was meant for, I had clothes boots wig and eyes all set for him.... then he turned up with the most gorgeous blue eyes in and a spiky platinum blonde wig, and now he has completely changed to an "average little boy" (see gallery) Emo/punk/goth stuff just will not do....

I have made him denim shorts, and some plain jeans, and am planning on using some of my sons outgrowns to make lots of "child" clothes. Dungarees, bright t-shirts and the like.... I also knit, so little kiddy cardingans a plenty too :D

    3. I want the urban stuff in grey really, it's hard enough to find in human-sized stuff, but those boots were a great find. Platforms wouldn't have killed me, but I can't stand the ones with chains and straps. They would be so wrong for the character!

    4. Honestly I shouldn't care, but I can say I am sick of seeing the boy dolls being bought just to be put in dresses and get a boyfriend. That trend is just disgusting to me, but this is coming from a girl that hates the yaoi fandom with a a small passion so yeah :|.

The gothic lolita or it's really just a bunch of sweet lolita trend is nice cause it takes a lot of work to make dresses/outfits with that many pieces in scale with these dolls. Although I wish it wasn't just black/white/pink/red the vast majority of the time. Some prints are tossed in as well as baby blues, but it could be expanded a little. If it was straight gothic lolita I could accept the 4 main colors easy, but when you got sweet lolita dresses in only those 4 colors...I just won't get into it cause there are lines that are crossed.

In all honesty I don't care what other dolls are wearing. I only have to care when I want to buy an outfit from a company and am left with few choices. I have fun making my own clothes for the dolls and that is how it will stand for awhile. I mean I don't care what anyone thinks of Adam in leather pants and a nice dress shirt, or Rhiannon in jeans and a corset top, or Simi in a white dress, or Caitlin in an Irish dress. Anyone can say anything about that, but I don't care I like what they're in. So if someone only wants to dress their girl in a sweet lolita style fine. If someone buys a pretty dress only to put it on their boy, their business but no getting mad at me when I call him a girl.:|

    5. I was a part of the gothic dolly trend. I admit it. That's because that's how I dress. I tend to try and infuse a bit of myself in my boys. I have one doll right now who's dressed intirely in white. That'd be my boy Adonis. Reason being is I liked the white outfit. It also adds to his character. Since he's supposed to be an elfin god...but he's supposed to be a sexy god. XD

I also have your classic emo boy goth. I love him to death and he's that way because that's how his character is. Some of them fall into the "overused" clothing others don't.

It's really all about what you like. I've honestly contemplated getting my boy Adonis a nice suit. Simply because his character calls for it. I guess too it matters if you search. These dolls are meant to be fully customizeable. If they weren't, they'd be a bit boring. I also have to say that's why Barbie has a range of clothes you can buy. We constantly see certian things, but I always try to look at each individual thread in the gallery.

I've seen many a different fashion style like other people. If I had a lot of money my boys would have a whole bunch of different styles of clothes. Right now the only boy who has much of anything is my first boy. (I'm hoping to change that quite soon.) I actually asked someone to make a pair of skull and crossbones pajama bottoms...XD It's because it fits with the character who will be wearing them.

Okay I'll stop here...I'm just rambling now.

Bottom line: People go through fashion trends so do dolls....it's life really, I guess.

    6. I love gothic lolita, just sick of it. And I can never find it in the colors I want.. I want nice browns, dark greens, greys.. all I get is black and white, if im lucky maybe some pink and red.

I also don't mind frilly girly boys.. as long as you can still tell they're boys! A hound in a frilly dress would make me giggle :D I understand the desire for a girly boy rather than just a girl.. I've considered a boyish girl, that doesnt mean i want a boy instead. ^-^ But I am rather sick of the queer emo boys with equally girly boyfriends..

    7. I have various different fashions going on. A whole group of my guys dress very casual average guy looking (Jeans, t-shirts, etc). I have one very girly boy, one boy who isn't really girl but more flamboyant than the casual guys (if that makes sense), two fantasy characters, two girls that dress in kind of nice normal girl clothes, a couple punky/gothy gals, one that (finally!) likes lolita, and one that I haven't figured out yet. Oh, and one guy who wears a suit. Pretty soon, I'm going to have everything covered, lol--though that's never been my goal really.

The two that I have the most trouble dressing are the fantasy guys. Much of the stuff I find is too aristocratic looking (neither would dress upper class) or are girl clothes. I pieced together an outfit for the one, but am still trying to find stuff for the other.

I'm not really sick of any particular fashion trend. If it seems to fit the doll's personality, then that's whats really important to me. Plus, seeing well made clothing of any kind in pretty doll pictures can be interesting. I hate to sew, so I admire those that have the patience and skill.

    8. My dolls dress different depending on my whim at the time. I like that they can look completely different with a clothes/wig/eye change. Sometimes my husband is amazed that it is the same doll...

    9. The more variety the better. Fashion is about choices and being able to express oneself in an individual way. It can be anything. I prefer human trends for doll fashion though, sense I tend to push for realism. Romantism is good for costume contests.

    10. I always used to love the steampunk look, but the doll fad has made me officially sick of it. And its misinterpretations. :< But I saw that one coming... one has to brace oneself for creeping distaste whenever anything cool gets picked up by fashion & drummed into the ground. Now, anything with 2 zippers on it is sold as steampunk. (For that matter, anything with lace trim on it is marketed as Lolita, and anything with so much as a black stripe on it is marketed as Gothic. Vulture-sellers know how to capitalize on a fad!) Aww, but I still won't be throwing out the boys' Anotherspace goggles; cool is still cool. ^^

That Lolita thing creeps me out because it smells of pedokink and intentional self-infantilization, like those women who talk babytalk and call their husbands Daddy. It's a little scary to see it be so ubiquitous, because it doesn't have the subversive or ironic note of visual entertainment that babydoll-dresses had when the riot grrls were wearing them with army boots. But I understand that the young japanophile chicks love it, so the trend probably won't go away anytime soon. So it goes. Have fun.

Now that "things we're sick of" is done, the "things we'd like to see" part = More women in suits!

But you DON'T have to hunt, that's the real point-- just a page back I saw people providing direct links & shopping-leads, to the plain clothes that other people complain about not being able to find. I'm always finding plenty of plain clothes when I'm looking for more dramatic clothes; so apparently hunting isn't much required. Judicious shopping, of course, is. Even if your tastes are not in the current mainstream, it's all out there without too much sweat. The clothes-and-accessories market is farking huge right now, across the style-board-- it's a playground out there.

Of course, if you wait for items in your preferred style to fall out of Heaven & into your lap, then your shopping goes a little more slowly (but this method does also work, if you're not an impatient person).

    11. This Troper- to use my favourite form of first person pronouns after officially overdosing on the TVTropes wiki- would like to see what a lot of people here want to see- camo, boy clothes, and just plain shoes. Maybe even a nice pair of plain laceup sneakers for a boy, no crazy pink cherry print, no skulls- just plain, cheap sneakers. Some more classic shoe styles for boys and girls- not super-heeled combat boots or mary janes for the girls, but... functional shoes you could imagine them going for a walk in. And since my boy seems to be insisting on it, some punky clothes for boys that have a sharper edge, less colourful- maybe a bit grungier than all the J-rock stuff you see for sale around. That, I suppose I'll end up making for myself.

These doll clothes trends are nothing new- they're pretty cyclical. What is out one summer may come back in the next, with an ironic flavour. It's the faddishness that makes people who actually like a style sick of it- like if your favourite song is on the radio and they won't play anything else. Though you might love the song, it's become the next new thing, and you can't enjoy it the same way any more. If you're just aping a style without thinking of where it came from or why, you're bound to end up with a fad on your hands.

    12. And here I am just wishing I could find and be able to get some clothes for my girls. They are getting annoyed with me. LOL

    13. Lol, my boy is getting annoyed with me. Zee can't even wear any of Gwenllian's clothes because they're all pink. As much as he loves her, I don't think he's man enough to swallow his pride and wear pink himself :D Zee is definitely not a girly boy!

    14. I feel the same way about doll fashion as I do about human fashion - I'm only interested in "trends" when they play in to my interests.

      Examples:
I've loved steampunk and its derivatives for years. The recent surge steampunk-inspired clothing and accessories for the dolls (which is actually happening at the same time as a boom in interest in it in the non-dolly world, too) has me thrilled.

I love military-esque clothing and equipment, primarily the kind that would actually be used in the field (fatigues) as opposed to dress uniforms and the like, but some of those are cool, too. So when human fashion went through a period last year during which pants made of rip-stop fabric with lots of pockets, and shirts and jackets with epaulets and double-breasted, brass-buttoned fronts were all over the place, I was in Happy Land.

    15. Theres so meny clothes to buy and so little time and money ;-;(I know this isn't exactly what's being disscused ) ,but the clothes seriously cost more that mine~! I love the shoes!!! LoVE THEM! Now as far as style goes...Im willing to experiment more on my doll than myself though first I think.

    16. I just love the Nick Cave quote. Thank you for sharing. Love to all the goths out there:aheartbea on DOA! :)

    17. < Is feeling the love. :love

I've seen very few lesbian couples in dollie land, if any. Why are the boys always gay but the girls have to be straight???

Or are we talking strictly clothing here? Why don't we have more dollie corsets? Or bondage stuff?

    18. For 500 dollars, what is, "Things that just won't die"? XD Goths and cockroaches!
That was just a wee reality-check/reminder to everybody, that goth is actually no 'fad'... it's been alive for much longer than a lot of the kids here.

    19. There must be dozens and dozens of people you can commission to do anything you want done both on DoA and ebay.

      .....except for shoes and boots.

FINALLY there are some companies putting out plain flat boots without laces and chains and dangly bits and chunky soles. But it has been a loooooooong wait.

    20. Pffft.... My Poshdolls flat-soled chelsea boots & whole rainbow of Dollmore sneakers have been around since at least '05. People are just lazy shoppers! ^^
