Doll Houses?

Jan 25, 2014

1. Do you want one (just a bedroom or a full house)? Why or why not?
I think I'd like to have a bedroom, or a few bedrooms for my dolls. I feel like a house would be too gigantic and take up too much space, also my cats would be drawn to it if i left it at home. (i'm in college at the moment so its a little impractical)

Would you want one for all of your dolls or just the smaller ones?
I really really really wish i could make stunning rooms for all of my dolls, but funds and space would be an issue. If i ever made something it would probably just be a room for them all to share.

Do you just consider your room to be their room as well?
I actually never even thought of that. Probably not because its not to scale with them, they do live in here though, they just don't have their own beds or furniture.

If you've been browsing like myself, what are some cool ones or neat ideas that you've seen?
I'm really fond of the rooms that are built out of armoires and wardrobes, they're really cute and you can close them up when you need to.

Do you think it would be worth the extra expense?
Not unless you're going to use it for photos, is my personal opinion. It takes a lot of work and money and space to make. However I do think its worth it to get your dolls cute home-y things, like small couches or a bench or something nice to sit on! It costs a little less and it would make me feel good to know my dolls are sitting on something comfier than a shelf.

2. Is it a full house with different rooms or is it just a bedroom?

Chaeri's house is a one-room apartment of sorts. She really has two: a "travel room" I can fold up into a case and carry with me to events and the larger house she shares with Johnny, her husband. The latter can also be folded up into a case, but since it's approximately the size of a Samsonite suitcase it's not as portable.

Handmade or bought/custom-made for you?

I'm proud to say I made both of these dwellings with my own hands.

Is it for all of your dolls, regardless of size or do you reserve it for your smaller dolls?

My dolls are 1/6 scale, but the house is reserved for the married couple. I'm afraid the rest of the krewe still dwell on a bookshelf. :B

Does it take up a lot of space? Do you put it away when you're not playing with your dolls to save space?

I have a place beside my bed reserved for the "dream house". I never put it away.

Any tips for us that have space issues?

There's something to be said for one-room dwellings, even for multiple dolls. Also, one of the features of the "travel house" is that the futon is used as a place to sit by day and unfolds into a bed by night. Also, the "coffee table" is a box that doubles for storage. Convertible furniture for the win. :D

Please post pictures if you'd like! I'd love to see them!

By your command. :)

Recently (well, a year ago), Chaeri and Johnny got married and I made them a bigger house. This is the only picture safe for DoA:

3. reminds me of my youth - playing with barbie in her lovely house until.... my sister and i struggled and boom the house broke down. A tree house also would be a nice idea

4. For those without:

Do you want one (just a bedroom or a full house)? Why or why not?

Yes, I do! I think I'd start out with just a bedroom, but maybe move on to a "full house" (as in, small house) with one/more bedrooms (depending on how many dolls I have at the time), a living room and maybe a "hobby room"

Would you want one for all of your dolls or just the smaller ones?

Since I don't think I'll get any other sizes than MSD, Yo-SD and maybe the one a bit smaller than Yo-SD (can't remember the name, sorry >.<), they'll get to share the house :) maybe they'll get seperate rooms (one "adultroom", one room for the "kids" etc)

Do you just consider your room to be their room as well?

Well, right now, no, since they have their own room. My older brother moved to UK (I live in Sweden) last year, and wont be back for at least a couple of months, so while he's gone, his room is my craft- and dollroom! ^-^ but if I were to have them in my room, I would consider it their room as well.

If you've been browsing like myself, what are some cool ones or neat ideas that you've seen?

Bunk-beds, wardrobes, tables, beds and a lot of other things. I'm easily impressed... haha.

Do you think it would be worth the extra expense (buying furniture, getting wallpapers/carpets, keeping it clean, etc)? Why or why not?

Yes, I do. My dolls need a home (also, I LOVE dollhouses, which is one more reason), so it would very much be worth it. It would be very fun too!

5. Do you want one (just a bedroom or a full house)? Why or why not?

I would love one for my 1/4 sized dolls, but space is always the issue! I can see myself having one for the smaller dolls first before the bigger dolls. If I do end up making one for my bigger dolls, it would most likely be one or two rooms - like a bedroom and living room.

Would you want one for all of your dolls or just the smaller ones?

It would be nice to have some living space for all my dolls, but in reality it probably won't happen. I can see the smaller dolls moving into the bigger dolls space as well - they are little imps and halflings after all lol!

Do you just consider your room to be their room as well?

Right now, it is. Guy is on a little blanket with his computer in the same room I'm on my computer. With the rest of my dolls, they are hanging out together on top of my dresser on benches and little chairs. It's not "their" room, but it's still cozy.

If you've been browsing like myself, what are some cool ones or neat ideas that you've seen?

There was an idea for the wee little ones that I really liked. It was like a binder that could fold out, it saved space and looked really neat! I've kinda entertained the idea of doing something like that for Guy...if I ever feel up to it :P

Do you think it would be worth the extra expense (buying furniture, getting wallpapers/carpets, keeping it clean, etc)? Why or why not?

In the long run I think it would be worth it, especially for pictures! You can also keep it as cheap as you want - you can get carpet and wallpaper samples for cheap and being creative (and by looking at other tutorials) by making your own furniture seems pretty easy and doable.

7. Is it a full house with different rooms or is it just a bedroom?
I have one giant room (about 24"x18") that works as both a bedroom and living room. I'm in the process of making an identical sized box, but with one wall in the middle, so it's got an "indoor" space (kitchen) and an "outdoor" space.
Handmade or bought/custom-made for you?
Everything from the box to the furniture to the decor to the linens were handmade by me.
Is it for all of your dolls, regardless of size or do you reserve it for your smaller dolls?
I only have 16cm, so... both. :-)
Does it take up a lot of space? Do you put it away when you're not playing with your dolls to save space?
I leave it out unless I have visitors. I have a designated spot in my closet that it will fit.
Any tips for us that have space issues?
Try just making a room box like I have. My reason for making a room box instead of a dollhouse is that I like that it has no roof to it because it lets tons of light in for photography.
Please post pictures if you'd like! I'd love to see them!
Ignore the pile of clothes between the closet and the fireplace (I need to make more hangers). It's not done, but basically all I have left to do is decor, like photos on the wall and a rug.[IMG]

8. Lovely responses, everyone! And all of the pictures posted so far are great! I love looking at what everyone has, it makes me so jealous (in the most positive way possible lol)!

I'm even more excited because I just found out I'm getting a Pipos Lloyd, and since he's 1/6 scale, a dollhouse might be possible for him! :D

9. I think a doll house would be really awesome, but I don't have the time to really make a custom one. Currently I'm looking for some shelves or a nice cabinet that would be able to be turned into a doll "house" of sorts. If I had the room, I wouldn't mind more living areas, but I consider my room their room. I'd like my doll house to act as both a storage unit and a nice place I can keep my dolls. (More like a Green Room than a house I guess, their home is mine. :))

10. Oooh, have just found this thread - very timely as my 12th scale catsy has just arrived, and I've been photographing her in a couple of dollhouses today! I should say that I was into dollhouses before discovering BJDs, so finding some 12th scale BJDs has been heaven!

For those with dollhouses:
Is it a full house with different rooms or is it just a bedroom?
Um, I have quite a few - two big houses, three small houses, and lots and lots of room boxes - some modern, some traditional, and some themed (antiques shop, fish shop, police station, school room, caravan etc)...

Handmade or bought/custom-made for you?
All but one handmade, either total renovations or built from scratch from kits. The one exception is the bedroom below, which was empty but decorated so beautifully it would have been criminal to strip that out...

Is it for all of your dolls, regardless of size or do you reserve it for your smaller dolls?
Tiny dolls only!

Does it take up a lot of space? Do you put it away when you're not playing with your dolls to save space?

Oh yes re space - I have the houses stacked up, and the room boxes sit on shelves.

Any tips for us that have space issues?
Um, not really (I don't set a good example!) - though room boxes are more practical space-wise...

Please post pictures if you'd like! I'd love to see them!
Hurrah - limiting this to a couple of examples!
My catsy has been settling into this bedroom today...

11. I dont have enough space in my room......maybe I need buy myself a larger house at first!

12. Those rooms are so great, shrinkomatic! :D That den is absolutely stunning! I wish more 1/12 scale dolls appealed to me because I love 1/12 scale furniture and dollhouses too! Though maybe I can get away with 1/6 scale for now. :)

13. I started off trying to make a dollhouse from a bookshelf from an idea I saw on Pinterest. Then my mom used the book shelf as a shoe rack after I had painted it so I gave up for a while. Then I found a three story dollhouse at Ross for $65 around Christmas time and although the paint job was horrible decided to get it anyway. I painted it white and though it's still empty I plan to decorate it someday. The ceilings are high but I think it'll only fit my Lati's and small dolls.

14. I have two bookshelves done up as rooms, one for SD size and one for MSD, and a little room box that hangs on the wall for my tinies. In the future I plan to buy a house and line one wall of my library/office with big, deep shelves for lots of rooms.

15. For those without:

Do you want one (just a bedroom or a full house)? Why or why not?
I am in the middle of planning a two room diorama/house for my LTF that is not here yet. So this thread is a fun read.

I don’t have room for a full size 1/6 scale house so I am planning the rooms backgrounds in neutral colors so that I can change them without too much effort.

Would you want one for all of your dolls or just the smaller ones?

I usually concentrate on one or two dolls so I probably will only make one for this size doll and do a smaller dioramas for any smaller dolls that I may get in the future.

Do you just consider your room to be their room as well?
My computer room is shared with the dolls.

If you've been browsing like myself, what are some cool ones or neat ideas that you've seen?

My inspiration comes from many different places…

but the inspiration for the two room diorama came from an double stack roombox that I saw on pinterest. I also like to look at antique roomboxes.

Do you think it would be worth the extra expense (buying furniture, getting wallpapers/carpets, keeping it clean, etc)? Why or why not?

Great props and furniture for me is what it is all about, if I put in the time to do this in the first place I want to do it the best I can within my budget, I will also make a few of the items for my rooms but most of the things will be bought. I would rather go slow and add over time than do something that I will not be happy with down the road.

16. Do you want one (just a bedroom or a full house)? Why or why not?
Last summer I was toying with the idea of getting a full dollhouse kit and building it myself for a fun project. I have some pukipukis who would love to live in it. I could never commit though, too scared I guess. I still would really love to do it someday... I also would really love to do some simple room boxes, or a diorama... or something.

Would you want one for all of your dolls or just the smaller ones?
A house for the pukis would be awesome, but I wouldn't mind making some room boxes or a diorama for the bigger ones. My Minifee could really use a bedroom or maybe a living room.

Do you just consider your room to be their room as well?
No. Our master bedroom is small. I keep my dolls (when they aren't out) in a closet in our office. I have NO IDEA where I would store room boxes or a dollhouse. We don't really have space for that sort of thing...

If you've been browsing like myself, what are some cool ones or neat ideas that you've seen?
I'm a huge fan of Randomfish's dioramas. Huge HUGE fan :fangirl: I also really loved Linda Gavin's (flickr) puki rooms... miss her stuff

Do you think it would be worth the extra expense (buying furniture, getting wallpapers/carpets, keeping it clean, etc)? Why or why not?
For me it would be. I've always loved miniatures and decorating and crafts and stuff like that, so a dollhouse or roombox would be a fabulous hobby for me and well worth the money and effort. BUT the space issue keeps me from pulling the trigger just yet.

17. Hello! I thought I would put my two cents in too ^^

Do you want one (just a bedroom or a full house)? Why or why not? I would love to have a full house! I plan on getting a pukifee someday and I want to built an enter house!
Would you want one for all of your dolls or just the smaller ones? Just the smaller, I don't have room for a giant dollhouse.
Do you just consider your room to be their room as well? Of course! I by them, so they can "share" my home
If you've been browsing like myself, what are some cool ones or neat ideas that you've seen? I saw someone build in a slide and make a little water park once, super cool!
Do you think it would be worth the extra expense (buying furniture, getting wallpapers/carpets, keeping it clean, etc)? Why or why not? Oh yes! I mean, if you have some extra money, why not invest it in something that would make you and your dolls happy!

18. Is it a full house with different rooms or is it just a bedroom?
I have some roomboxes and a Re-ment house, and I've also made rooms in a shelving unit for my little guys. For the big ones, it tends to be just furniture (or maybe some foam core walls) on my work table.

Handmade or bought/custom-made for you?
The room boxes I bought - AG Minis and Rement. I really admire the people who make their own! Just making a few walls was hard for me, and the results were not that great - but it was a lot of fun.

Is it for all of your dolls, regardless of size or do you reserve it for your smaller dolls?
Mainly my smaller ones, but I have at least a few pieces of furniture (mainly chairs) for all my sizes. My MSD dolls have the least amount, my tinies the most.

Does it take up a lot of space? Do you put it away when you're not playing with your dolls to save space?
I would love to have more room! Right now, my dolls all live in a tiny room in the basement that I share with my husband's collection of beer memorabilia (sigh). I've had more fun building rooms for my big dolls since moving down there, since we have a big worktable that can be used.

Any tips for us that have space issues?
Before I had a space for mine, I had one room box (my Re-ment house) that was pretty neutral, and I just kept changing it up with different things to make different rooms, and kept all my extra stuff in a storage box. I think the foam core boards are a good idea too - just pin them together at the corners, and when you're done, you can put them away flat. I'm not sure that I've ever heard anyone say they have enough room for all the things they want to do!

Would love to post pictures, but my husband has taken over in our 'shared' room right now - here's one of my Pukifee rooms in the shelving unit I mentioned:

19. Is it a full house with different rooms or is it just a bedroom?

It's a one room flat, as I call it.

Handmade or bought/custom-made for you?
Bought, it's a Target house box...I freakin' love that thing.
Is it for all of your dolls, regardless of size or do you reserve it for your smaller dolls?
Only for Lil V (Veronica) and sometimes Haruhi...Eventually I wanna get a friend for Lil V but Lil gal will have to wait.
Does it take up a lot of space? Do you put it away when you're not playing with your dolls to save space?
Not a lot of space, is taken up. I just wish I had more room INSIDE.
Any tips for us that have space issues?

Just try to make it work for you, if it has to be a temp set up make it easy to set up exactly the same every time.
Please post pictures if you'd like! I'd love to see them!

XD; Not right now sorry.

20. wow! really. Those houses are adorable.
Me? I don't have a house for my doll. But if ever i would be able to have a doll house i would want it to have bedrooms,
a living room and a dining area. With very very cute furniture inside
And ooh! don't forget about the garden with table and chairs when my dolls can have tea.
