Doll Houses?

Jan 25, 2014

1. Your dollhouses are amazing! I don't. But maybe one day ... ;)

2. for bigger dolls I'd rather just have a big bed for them all to hang out on...but for tinies I'd love to have a dollhouse for them! that would be such a fun project to work on

3. For those with dollhouses:

Is it a full house with different rooms or is it just a bedroom?
I have 2 dollhouses, one with 2 floors and the other one is more of a house-shaped roombox.

Handmade or bought/custom-made for you?
The first dollhouse is a kit I got from Cotton On Kids, the second one is handmade because I couldn't find an alternative with just the right dimensions.

Is it for all of your dolls, regardless of size or do you reserve it for your smaller dolls?
The dollhouses are for my smaller dolls. Most of my resin family are SD's so it's difficult to build houses in that scale. (Altho I might decorate their display cabinet so that it looks like a room) The kit isn't even for my bjds even tho my tiny can fit in it, I got it because I was interested in the miniatures hobby. It then led to me building the roombox.

Does it take up a lot of space? Do you put it away when you're not playing with your dolls to save space?
The kit takes up a corner of my bedroom because I had the available space, but that's pretty much all I got so I won't be having any new large dollhouses any time soon. I purposely made the roombox small so I can display it on my side table. I am planning a new project where it folds away and can be stored when I'm done playing with it.

Any tips for us that have space issues?
Anything that can be folded and stored like collapsible roomboxes or suitcase/trunk houses. Or something small because you don't need much space for tinies.

Please post pictures if you'd like! I'd love to see them!
My house-shaped roombox, It's still lacking extras so it's not quite finished yet:

4. Wow, humbug, I love your room box! I made two room boxes for my 1/6 size dolls, one with two walls and one with three. You can see them on my flickr.
I'd like to make something similar for msd size but the one I have now takes up quite a lot of space and I guess it's not as easy to find 1/4 mini things to go in it (I love re-ment for my 1/6 dolls.

5. Thank you minimoon, your room box looks great too! I love looking at miniature setups. :D

6. I love all these houses! Its been a dream of mine to create a completely house! So far I just shorta have a lot of props and I put them on shelves! They are no where nearly large enough! SO this gives me inspirations for sure!

7. I'd love to have the room to build a big dollhouse for my SDs & a slightly smaller one for my MSDs but I simply don't have the room. That being said I have a lot of furniture & props in both sizes. What I do is display my dolls in glass cabinets & rather than just standing there I have them doing things, sitting in chairs around a table, lounging on sofas & fainting couches with their animals (lots of them) around them & some props to finish out the display.

Since most of these things are in glass cabinets they don't really get dirty. As far as it being worth the extra expense, it's definitely worth it for me as I like to have my dolls doing something.

8. I only have 16 cm dolls and smaller, so my dream is to get to buy one of the gorgeous dollhouses I found on Amazon. The problem is I do not have much room at home, so for the moment I'm using a shelf in one of my bookshelves as a dollroom.
The furniture is from IKEA (perfect for the 16cm dolls) and from Fleurdelys.com (perfect for 12cm dolls although that website sells it as suitable for lati yellow and even use those dolls modelling beside the furniture, but they play with perspective, so distrust the pics and even more if no doll appears beside the forniture or accessories).

That bedroom now looks a bit different because I painted some pink details on some furniture and added some toys.

I'm editing because I originally wrote this post from my mobile phone, so couldn't add the picture. Here it is:
[IMG] Baby_room por Sweet Faery, en Flickr[/IMG]

The dolls in the picture are, from left to right, my pukifee Luna "Lluna", my little dal with obitsu 11 body "Laura", my pukipuki ante "Tina" and my pukifee ante "Cristine".

9. I have a cube on my shelf convereted for my Kid Delf. It really only has room for his dresser and a chair for him to sit in, but all of his toys are on top of the dresser and he looks happy there. For my other dolls - (not considered BJD) - I have two selves convereted because they fit. One is a living space and the other is a bedroom. I worked hard on it and I plan to convert and entire bookshelf for smaller dolls in the future.

10. One day, I'll have a shelf big enough to store my dolls, but today is not that day :(

11. Wow I love some of these pics, I probably wont be looking to get an actual doll house, but I'm hoping to convert a shelf on my nicer book shelves in to a room to display my girl when she gets here. I just have yet to decide which one, and I need to finish up the furniture I was making and maybe a nice rug/carpet.

12. I love seeing everyone's set ups and the different styles! I posted on this thread a while ago, but I've just finished my first new room and set up for ages - this is a bedroom for two of my pukipuki girls and is in a standalone room box (and for anyone with space issues - room boxes are so much easier to store and display and stack up!).

13. Too cute shrinkomatic!
Loves the working light!

14. shrinkomatic- wow so much detail!

15. Wow, all the houses are so cute and pretty! I'd love to have my own one day.

Do you want one (just a bedroom or a full house)? Why or why not?
I would love to have a full house one day, which I plan on happening once I find a nice sized place of my own.

Would you want one for all of your dolls or just the smaller ones?
I own mostly SD's, but the house would be big enough for all my dolls to share.

Do you just consider your room to be their room as well?
For now, yes. I have loads of furniture they sit on around the room, as well as a small diorama.

If you've been browsing like myself, what are some cool ones or neat ideas that you've seen?
I love the idea of people using entire bookshelves as doll rooms for the bigger kids. Personally, my dad suggested putting up wall shelves, which would not only save space but I'd have virtually no limit in how many to use or what to put on them. One day I want to do that and make one continuous shelf that would span an entire wall.

Do you think it would be worth the extra expense (buying furniture, getting wallpapers/carpets, keeping it clean, etc)? Why or why not?
Definitely! To me, this is the most underrated facet of the hobby, as most hobbyists seem to focus on clothes and accessories. But what better way to accentuate that than by building a world to place them!

16. Wow those are amazing. I do want a dollhouse for my BJD someday

17. I'd love to make rooms for each doll I plan to get. I'm currently making a room box for my Freya but since she fits into most barbie furniture it's a bit easier.

18. I love this thread !!!
I love to see dollhouses... Shrinkomatic, your bedroom for Pukipuki is so cute, I love all the details !!! The light, the real windows with exterior light coming through, wow !!!

I am new to BJDs, I only own one so far but I also collect Ellowyne Wilde dolls and I wanted a dollhouse for them so much !
So I bought and converted a glass cabinet into a dollhouse for them, and luckily it fits my Iplehouse Leona BJD as well !

Is it a full house with different rooms or is it just a bedroom?

It is a 4 storey house with different rooms :
- one floor with a bedroom and a bathroom
- one floor with a dressing room
- one floor with a living room and a music room
- and the last one with a kitchen and a patio

Handmade or bought/custom-made for you?

I bought a lot of stuff along the years, but it's hard to find items at the 1:4 scale.
The only thing I made myself is the fireplace, I'm not very good at making things.
It's still work in progress, not decorated and not very elaborate I'm afraid.

Is it for all of your dolls, regardless of size or do you reserve it for your smaller dolls?
I only have 1:4 scale dolls anyway (Ellowyne wilde or MSD sized Iplehouse Leona) but I plan on buying a Littlefee and I think she will fit in as well.

Does it take up a lot of space? Do you put it away when you're not playing with your dolls to save space?
It is a huge wardrobe with glazed doors and it is very tall but not very deep, so it's room-saving as it saves floor space.
But it's not deep enough and it's hard to take pictures.

Please post pictures if you'd like! I'd love to see them!
I will post some pictures but please forgive me, I haven't had time to take many pictures with my BJD in it, so it's mainly older pictures with my Ellowyne Wilde dolls. Sorry ! I will try and take new pictures with my BJD soon.

I have been lazy lately but this thread makes me want to get back to it !;)

19. i think it is lovely! you have managed to find/make quite a few things in 1/4 scale (which i agree is a challenge to find compared to the smaller scales and so expensive to ship if there is nothing locally!)

20. For those with dollhouses:
Is it a full house with different rooms or is it just a bedroom?
Right now I only have one "room". I hope to eventually make it look like a bachelor apartment. So it would be one room but with sections.

Handmade or bought/custom-made for you?
It's made from bits and pieces I've found from different places. The base of it is a coffee table.

Is it for all of your dolls, regardless of size or do you reserve it for your smaller dolls?
I only have one doll at the moment, so it's just for him. However, if I get new dolls, I do want them to "live" together.

Does it take up a lot of space? Do you put it away when you're not playing with your dolls to save space?
It's a coffee table that sits in one corner of the house. I can't really put it away. But it really doesn't take up all that much space, either. Of course, I have a SD doll so things do tend to be a tad larger. But it should be even easier for smaller dolls.

Any tips for us that have space issues?
It's amazing what you can do with the top of bookshelves or dressers. If you can clear away one self on a bookshelf, it would be a pretty good start already to stage an indoor scene and make it a "room" or an "apartment".

Please post pictures if you'd like! I'd love to see them!

It's under renovation right now. I'll be moving it to the top of a longer dresser soon. So the layout will change soon. But this is how it looked as of last week.
