Doll Houses?

Jan 25, 2014

    1. Do you want one (just a bedroom or a full house)? Why or why not?

A full house! But I already make doll furniture so I think it's something I could accomplish. I was actually thinking it would be really cool to have an entire room dedicated to being a doll house for the 1/3 size dolls. If you could walk into the center of it and view several room of a full size house shaped like a square, but missing the entrance. Like those circular/square houses with courtyards in the middle, except the courtyard area would be where I can stand and view the house.

Would you want one for all of your dolls or just the smaller ones?

So far I like the 1/3 best and the 1/4 I'm interested in I would treat as smaller siblings or teen children. So they would fit into the normal size house.

Do you just consider your room to be their room as well?

If I don't do a full doll house room then I would just have a shelf area, but not my entire room.

If you've been browsing like myself, what are some cool ones or neat ideas that you've seen?

There are some amazing designs of 1:24 and 1:12 houses online. I would definitely take inspiration for the rooms from those. I like how highly detailed some dollhouse artists get.

Do you think it would be worth the extra expense (buying furniture, getting wallpapers/carpets, keeping it clean, etc)? Why or why not?

Absolutely! It just makes the whole thing magically come to life. I can make/know how to make a lot of the things that go into a doll house, so I can imagine the time/expenses might be difficult for some people.

    2. that would be pretty awesome, (but you would have to have a lot of space to dedicate to make a whole house in 1\3 scale! it would take up a third of a normal house!)

    3. Thanks Auntbear, you're too kind !
I still have a lot to do but it takes time and money, and as I don't have much of these, especially the latter, I always hesitate between buying a prop or saving for a doll.

Wow, Dreedree, a full dollhouse for the 1/3 scale, that would be great but so huge !
I hope you can make it some day and I would love to see it !

    4. Do you want one (just a bedroom or a full house)? Why or why not?
I think it'd be really awesome if I could have a doll house for my bjds in the future! Although, because of the lack of space, as well as the fact that I'm not really good at building stuff, I probably won't be able to get/build one in the near future. When I do have one, though, I probably would want to have the rooms that I think I'd use the most for photos/or where my doll would stay the most, so bedroom, living room, and dining room -- these are the rooms that I'd like to have. xD

Would you want one for all of your dolls or just the smaller ones?
Seeing as I only have one doll, although I'm planning on adding more in the future, I guess I'd want a doll house that might fit them all? So a high-ceiling house thingo, just in case I get SDs or something. \shot

      Do you just consider
your room to be their room as well?
Not exactly. I consider the box she came with as her makeshift living space while I try to find someplace permanent for her to be.
If you've been browsing like myself, what are some cool ones or neat ideas that you've seen?
I haven't really been looking around much, but so far, I've seen a lot of cool and awesome looking doll houses that aren't exactly for BJD. xD
Do you think it would be worth the extra expense (buying furniture, getting wallpapers/carpets, keeping it clean, etc)? Why or why not?
I think that as long as you enjoy it, and have the funds of it, why not? It makes you happy, after all.

    5. I don't have a 'house' for them yet, but I'm working on it. (collecting furniture and props)

Do you want one (just a bedroom or a full house)? Why or why not?
I would love to have a full house. A bedroom for everyone, a living room, a workspace and a garden.

Would you want one for all of your dolls or just the smaller ones?
I'm mostly interested in sds so it'll be sd size. Except for the children bedrooms.

Do you just consider your room to be their room as well?
Not really. The have their own space to sit and my room is way to messy for them.

If you've been browsing like myself, what are some cool ones or neat ideas that you've seen?
I've seen so many awesome dollhouses! Most of them 1:12 size. I would love to have a house like that for my dolls.
I was looking a a blog one time and saw the most beautiful 1:12 sized clockmaker workshop. Since one of my dolls is a clockmaker that would be my biggest dream to make.

Do you think it would be worth the extra expense (buying furniture, getting wallpapers/carpets, keeping it clean, etc)? Why or why not?
Definitely! I've always loved to have furniture for my dolls (my barbies when I was younger) and it would be fantastic to have a real house for my bjd's. I enjoy the design of rooms so I think I can let my creativity flow with a dollhouse.

    6. Do you want one (just a bedroom or a full house)? Why or why not?
I don't think I would want an actual dollhouse just because my room is small and I wouldn't have enough space for it, but I would love to get furniture and maybe backgrounds to make a dollhouse like section of my room if that makes sense.

Would you want one for all of your dolls or just the smaller ones?
I would consider getting an actual dollhouse if I had smaller sized dolls. But I think a doll house for a 1/4 scale and bigger would just be too massive for me.

Do you just consider your room to be their room as well?
Yup, that's where he hangs out so we're definitely roomies.

Do you think it would be worth the extra expense (buying furniture, getting wallpapers/carpets, keeping it clean, etc)? Why or why not?
Yes, I think it would be worth it in order to get the type of setting I want for pictures. And it would just be something else I would have to dust off when it's that time of the week for figure dusting.

    7. I was just thinking about getting my dolls some furniture, it would be so much nicer to actually put them in a room than to just display them on a shelf.
My dolls are mostly 1/4 or yo-sd size so a full dollhouse is probably impossible. I was thinking of placing my brownie on a chair and pretending she was a doll.
I'll probably just set up a bedroom, maybe a studio, but I still need to find the right furniture.
I will need to buy a shelf to put it on first, I'd like one of those with glass doors so they won't catch dust, but it's difficult to find one that is big enough but not too expensive.

    8. I don't have one yet but I'm planning on making a little room for mine in my closet!
My biggest worry is lighting, I'm not sure if I'd be able to take pictures :...( I hope to make all the furniture myself, I only have a vague idea of what I want to do but I think I would like to make it very much like a hobbit hole. I love the warm color tones and cozy feeling they have. If I start making anything I'll post pictures! :D

    9. Is it a full house with different rooms or is it just a bedroom?
It's just a room, however I just change the set around. I have sets for a bed room, living room, and dinning room.
      Handmade or bought/custom-made for you?
It's custom bought from queenemmadesigns on etsy. Though its made to fit american girl dolls, I had her custom make my sets all 2.5 inches taller, and the bed larger, ect.. The seller is nice and if you want your own custom sets I'm sure she can help.
Is it for all of your dolls, regardless of size or do you reserve it for your smaller dolls?
I think it's more sized to MSD and smaller SD dolls. So msds may look young adult/teen ?
Does it take up a lot of space? Do you put it away when you're not playing with your dolls to save space?
I will put the furniture sets I'm not using away, and just display one set at a time on top of one of my dressers.
Any tips for us that have space issues?
Have a container and just put it away when your not using it?
Please post pictures if you'd like! I'd love to see them!
Sorry Its still in the process of being made, feel free to check the etsy links below. These are the custom sets I'm getting for my Bjd, they are going to be made taller ^.^. I will post pictures when it comes in though.
      Living room set
      Dinning room set
      Bed room set
      Parlor Unit

    10. I love doll houses, but when I get Tripp I really want to get her one of those fancy bamboo bird cages and make her a little nest/den in it XD I feel like she does not do proper "rooms". My OT dolls usually chill in my sewing room or in various places around the house. My porcelain BJD has a rocking chair she sits in. One day I'll build myself a dollhouse bookshelf, and they can all have rooms. I would love to do it up proper with wallpaper and tiny paintings... I love miniatures! Oh for that mythical day when I'll have the funds, space and time!

    11. I've seen a girl that made a beautiful dollhouse using as a base the typical Ikea shelf with some modules she designed and it looks awesomee!

    12. For those without:

Do you want one (just a bedroom or a full house)? Why or why not?
While a full house would be AWESOME, I just don't have the space, I own larger size dolls and it would take up a whole room. I really like the idea of staging rooms in a set of shelves! I might do that!

Would you want one for all of your dolls or just the smaller ones?
All of them, we work as a team in my house haha

Do you just consider your room to be their room as well?
Well yes, yes of course! Mi casa es vosotros casa!

If you've been browsing like myself, what are some cool ones or neat ideas that you've seen?
As I said earlier, I really like the shelf stageing idea! Each shelf could be a separate room: Bedroom, kitchen, bath etc. I might want to include ladders to the next shelf too!

Do you think it would be worth the extra expense (buying furniture, getting wallpapers/carpets, keeping it clean, etc)? Why or why not?

Yes, I think it would be worth it! They are congregating on my piano at the moment and it would be nice for them to have their own space tailored just for them! I could offset the cost by making my own props and sewing my own linens, and I have a friend who is an accomplished carpenter that has expressed an interest in making minis! :dance

    13. Oh and just FYI, this thread is evil! It has given me another project! hahaha, ah well, it is a great idea!....WAIT! One of those shelves has to be a Fallout (game) themed shelf......thanks OP! I was wondering what I was going to do between semesters this year! TO THE CRAFT STORE!!!!

    14. Sometimes I think it would be nice to have a proper room for my dolls, but to be honest, I think it would really interfere with my doll photography, because I'd be constantly restricted to just the one angle. I prefer to collect furniture and props and set them up at a certain height in my own rooms and use the real thing as background. Then I'm not limited by camera angles.

However, I do think a house that opens would be a nice option for my really tiny bjds. A little mushroom house with tiny rustic furniture.

    15. I'd want a full house, and a blank room that's separate from the house, so I can get the best of both worlds. This way, my BJDs can have their own place, but if I ever want to take them out for different photoshoots, I can just move the furniture to the blank room. I'd LOVE one that came in 1/3 size, logically it'd be too big since the bed itself already is larger than a human-sized bedside table. I'm not sure if it'd be worth the extra expense, because I just think it's something necessary for the dolls. To me, they're people, and need stuff like that, too.

    16. This is a very interesting thread! I've never heard about people having dollhouses for their BJDs.

    17. A full dollhouse for 70cm guys would take up too much room! Some movable double-sided wall boards that could be slid under a bed when not in use, perhaps. (I have the panels of a deceased ping-pong table I've been using as movable crafting surfaces, so maybe...?) I could see how a few pieces of furniture could be easily converted to look like different houses/rooms; different dressings on a bed, a tablecloth and some plants on a dresser or coffee table, etc.

Of all the rooms I could make, Gail and Lysander's dorm room would be #1 priority, but a generic living room or a library would be nice too.

    18. wow!! your dollhouses are all so beautiful!! I'm jealous ^^

As for me, I don't have one yet lol my roommate and I will prooooobs get one in the future though considering our collection is looking like it's about to grow big time :o

    19. For those without:
Do you want one (just a bedroom or a full house)? Why or why not?
Yes! I've always been interested in 1/12-sized miniatures, so a 1/3 dollhouse is a natural extension of that. I'd actually like to construct room boxes that could be stacked to make a complete house for storage, yet easy to disassemble so any one of the rooms could be used for a photoshoot.

Would you want one for all of your dolls or just the smaller ones?
So far I have only 1 doll, with a practice head on the way, so. . . it'll be 1/3 size. :) I foresee the same rooms being used for any smaller dolls I get in the future, with the exception of any mature tinies, who would probably get their own settings. Props, however, will be sized to the doll they are intended for.

Do you just consider your room to be their room as well?
Never really thought about it. I guess not.

If you've been browsing like myself, what are some cool ones or neat ideas that you've seen?
      Haven't looked recently.

Do you think it would be worth the extra expense (buying furniture, getting wallpapers/carpets, keeping it clean, etc)? Why or why not?
If it's fun, it's not an expense! And I definitely count this as "fun." :)

    20. Do I want one?
DEFINTELY! But not a full house, I'd rather have room set-ups. Currently Kendra spends her days hanging out on a shelf of the secretary desk in the dining room (where I spend most of my time working on various things). She's going to have a bedroom upstairs once I can clear a shelf on the bookcase. I've got a bed to build, and a dresser to paint to match it.

She's the only doll I have just now, so she won't have to share.

Since she doesn't hang out in my bedroom, that's not her room, but the dining room is definitely her territory as well as ours.

It'll definitely be worth any expense as it's fun to design rooms
