Doll Houses?

Jan 25, 2014

    1. Do you want one (just a bedroom or a full house)? Why or why not?
YES! I would love a dollhouse for Nadeko (and my future dolls), even a single bedroom would be great so that I can take pictures of her in a scene that is in proper proportion to her...or just have a nice place to keep her and her things.

Would you want one for all of your dolls or just the smaller ones?
I only have an SD now and most of my wishlist is also SDs (I also have 1 YoSD and 2-3 MSDs planned) so it would definitely be preferable to have it for the SDs but the smaller dolls would also inhabit it.

Do you just consider your room to be their room as well?
I don't have a room, but I do consider my closet to be Nadeko's closet too.

If you've been browsing like myself, what are some cool ones or neat ideas that you've seen?
There are too many amazing ones that I've seen here on DoA, there was one that was a large living room perfectly to scale for SDs with a ton of awesome furniture that particularly amazed me (but I don't remember where I saw it and didn't save the pictures).

Do you think it would be worth the extra expense (buying furniture, getting wallpapers/carpets, keeping it clean, etc)? Why or why not?
In general, I do think that it's worth the extra expenses but unfortunately I am not at a place in my life where I could justify it right now, I don't have a room and the space I do have is very very little.

    2. Do you want one (just a bedroom or a full house)? Why or why not?
I would like to set something like this up, yes! Not a full house, since my dolls are primarily MSD-sized, so it would take up far too much space, but a few rooms would be nice (bedrooms for some, other rooms for others).

Would you want one for all of your dolls or just the smaller ones?
I don't think I could pull one off for the two SDs, but for the smaller ones, it'd be nice. I do actually have a little sitting room for one of my groups of tinies, which I really like! For the others, most of the dolls are (or will be) paired off with a partner in one of the MSD groupings, so that distinctly reduces the number of bedrooms I'd need for them (only four instead of eight, and I already have three beds in some state of construction).

Do you just consider your room to be their room as well?
No. They do hang out there, but they're representations of full-sized people, not doll-scale people living in a full-scale world. Their current shelves are their "rooms" right now, and if and when they do get new shelves/room boxes, those will be their "rooms."

If you've been browsing like myself, what are some cool ones or neat ideas that you've seen?
I have to admit, I adore the dollhouses people build for Puki-size dolls, and really want to do one of those sometime! I only have two dolls in that scale though, and they both don't exist in the same world, and exist as "pet-sized" characters, not full-size ones. Perhaps an excuse for some more tinies...?

Do you think it would be worth the extra expense (buying furniture, getting wallpapers/carpets, keeping it clean, etc)? Why or why not?
I think it could be, as much of the pieces can be fairly affordable (the beds I have all ran about $20, though that doesn't count work on making them look "right" or creating bedding for them), I'd likely skip actual carpeting, and wallpaper can be gift wrap, scrapbooking paper, or panels wrapped in fabric, so those are also fairly inexpensive options.

    3. Is it a full house with different rooms or is it just a bedroom? It's a bedroom in my house with an entire wall of shelving split into "box rooms". Most of these rooms are various SD bedrooms, but there's also a bar/lounge area, since I have too many dolls for them each to have their own bedroom.

Handmade or bought/custom-made for you? My husband built it all for SD scale

Is it for all of your dolls, regardless of size or do you reserve it for your smaller dolls?
It's mostly built in SD scale, though my MSD and YoSDs are in there as children.

Does it take up a lot of space? Do you put it away when you're not playing with your dolls to save space? Since the entire room is a doll room and the shelves are built into the wall, it's kind of permanent. XD Though I do have a few poster board backdrops to create other "rooms" that get put away when not in use.

Any tips for us that have space issues? You can get the folding poster boards like used in schools for projects, decorate them like rooms, and just fold them and stick them behind a piece of furniture or in a closet when not in use. This works well for SD. If you have YoSD or smaller, there are collapsible Barbie houses that you could repaint and store when not in use.

Please post pictures if you'd like! I'd love to see them! I need to take some pix! I don't have one of the full set up, but here's Parker bugging his parents in the early morning hours:

    4. Is it a full house with different rooms or is it just a bedroom?
I've got a just a bedroom for one of my 70cm couples, and I'm working on a "bachelor flat" for my 30cm Lumedoll Blaze.

      Handmade or bought/custom-made for you?

Everything in Gabriel & Élise's bedroom is something I either made myself or found at a thrift store or the dollar store. Liam's flat is in a shelf of a bookcase, and I expect I'll either make or thrift-shop for his stuff too.

Is it for all of your dolls, regardless of size or do you reserve it for your smaller dolls?
The bedroom is really only for Élise and Gabriel and their daughter. Liam's flat can only be for him because no one else is small enough. :XD:

Does it take up a lot of space? Do you put it away when you're not playing with your dolls to save space?
The 70cm bedroom takes up one whole corner of my home office. Because it's for 70cm dolls, it naturally does take up room lol. I never put it away; it's up permanently. Liam's flat doesn't take up more than one shelf of the bookcase, and it'll always be assembled too.

Any tips for us that have space issues?
Not really. If you've got a blank wall and a bit of free floor space, you can have a room "set". All it really requires is a fabric background for the wall and some choice props and/or furniture items.

Please post pictures if you'd like! I'd love to see them!
      Here's Gabriel & Élise's bedroom. I have no photos of Liam's flat-in-progress yet.

    5. Do you want one (just a bedroom or a full house)? Why or why not? - Probably just a bedroom, because I only have one boy at the moment.
Would you want one for all of your dolls or just the smaller ones? All of them.
Do you just consider your room to be their room as well? Pretty much...is that weird? o_o
If you've been browsing like myself, what are some cool ones or neat ideas that you've seen? I like the room box idea. It seems really cozy and cute. ^_^
Do you think it would be worth the extra expense (buying furniture, getting wallpapers/carpets, keeping it clean, etc)? Why or why not? Maybe one item at time...I can't imagine spending all my money on doll furniture.

    6. Is it a full house with different rooms or is it just a bedroom?

Just one room. A sort of study room, I imagine it like half a uni room (missing the bed and wardrobe). It's made for momoko but it works perfectly with my 30cm Darak-i Claire.

      Handmade or bought/custom-made for you?

I bought this from mini gamja http://blog.naver.com/fmpops as I don't speak Korean I had to send an email to work out if I could buy anything. I wasn't willing to wait as I hadn't seen any feedback etc so I needed in-stock to be covered by paypal etc. So I had a choice of 3 rooms so I picked this one :D Service was fantastic. Sent on the 20th of Oct and received on the 28th with no customs :P (Although the box was heavy so cost 80USD from Korea to UK). I would highly recommend the craftmanship of mini gamja!

Is it for all of your dolls, regardless of size or do you reserve it for your smaller dolls?

Well, my MSD girl can't stand in here but I have used it as a back drop a few times.

Does it take up a lot of space? Do you put it away when you're not playing with your dolls to save space?

It takes up quite a lot of space in my lounge, and I am forbidden from buying another until I live somewhere bigger >.> What's fantastic is the fact it can be left out without gathering dust because mini gamja includes a sliding plastic 'window' for the front which means you can see inside perfectly and protect the dolls/other stuff from things like cats... haha

Any tips for us that have space issues?

Sorry! This one can't collapse etc. but definitely worth the space it takes I think. One day I will definitely buy again from mini gamja, there are some amazing things on the website and I would love to commission a perfect one for me

Please post pictures if you'd like! I'd love to see them!

    7. Is it a full house with different rooms or is it just a bedroom?

It's more a series of room sets on different scales.

      Handmade or bought/custom-made for you?

I have a tall shelving unit at my bedside the has each shelf set us as a room with 1/12th scale furnishings for my Banji's and Pukis but this is supposed to be a temporary measure until I get their castle built..... nobody's holding their breath for that to happen however, and other spaces around the house that can be set up and dressed as temporary roomsets for the Mins or the SD size dolls using different furnishings:

Is it for all of your dolls, regardless of size or do you reserve it for your smaller dolls?

They need different sized furnishings and accessories so each room/room-set tends to be for a particular scale

Does it take up a lot of space? Do you put it away when you're not playing with your dolls to save space?

      Yes and yes

The one for the Banji's and Pukis is the exception as that's a piece of furniture that just stands there anyway. It's very basic and I do occasionally change the rooms (one of these has become a kitchen since the picture was taken):

My ambition for the SD gang is a more permanent space set up as a Victorian/Edwardian nursery for them... but I can't see that happening any time soon.

    8. Is it a full house with different rooms or is it just a bedroom?

Borrower house - It's one room, with a kitchenette in it.

MSD *spot* (they deny it's a shelf) it's one room and it's not even their bedroom. It's a sitting room. They've been demanding beds since I got them but I'm not giving in.
      Handmade or bought/custom-made for you?

Shelves were built by my father, but the furniture was bought, or found, or reconfigured.
Is it for all of your dolls, regardless of size or do you reserve it for your smaller dolls?

Regardless of size but if I got an SD THEN we'd have a real problem! No place to put them up in!
Does it take up a lot of space? Do you put it away when you're not playing with your dolls to save space?

It takes up a shelf I stopped using years ago and the tiny's house is keeping my dresser from errupting into chaos.
Any tips for us that have space issues?

Think about the size. If you have SD's and all you can do for space issues is bean bags, get the bean bags, and just make sure you enjoy it. If you can't have a permanent display, keep pictures on hand of what it looks like when it's set up so you can arrange it JUST right again. But if it's having a dollhouse vs having room for a desk, or takes up floor space that you need otherwise... Then it's not worth it.
Please post pictures if you'd like! I'd love to see them!

Before decoration (best pic I have as it's showing one of the benches AND the chair that there's been some mutiny breaking out over) [IMG]

During the holidays (before I got Avery, the couch belongs to Vala and Avery (My Yo-SD's) but Noah there can sit on it at least)

I don't have too many pictures of the tiny house without the chaos that it is currently. But here's my MSD/Yo'SD's claim to fame.

    9. Do you want one (just a bedroom or a full house)? Why or why not?
YEs~! i would love to have one, my idea is getting a studio house, with bedroom and living room are in a space. :) i love doll house, that why i wanted to make one.

Would you want one for all of your dolls or just the smaller ones?
if i have the capability, space concern, i would like to make for the big one also. i hope to have their own space :)

Do you just consider your room to be their room as well?
      yes, why not, :)

If you've been browsing like myself, what are some cool ones or neat ideas that you've seen?
neat ideas which can be used for putting dolls in cupboard or cabinet, like a square size, and make the square size their living room or bedroom :)

Do you think it would be worth the extra expense (buying furniture, getting wallpapers/carpets, keeping it clean, etc)? Why or why not?
worth or not really depends on your own, if for me, i would collect recycle items and collect for furniture DIY, well, if i putting them in the cabinet with covered, then it will be dust free :)

    10. Having just witnessed the construction of one of those wooden dollhouse kits they sell at places like Hobby Lobby for $$$ they would totally work for any tiny in the 5 inch and under scale, like Puki Puki and other babies. They cost as much as a big doll, require a sizable chunk of time and space, but it would be total spoilage.

    11. Yes, the 1/12 dollhouses are a great match for Pukipuki's and the like. As for price; size and brand determine how much you have to pay. Mine is a Greenleaf Orchid, a small dollhouse kit that only cost me 40 dollars. Of course, you also have to invest in other materials etc, but it really depends on how far you want to go. There are furniture kits that are cheap and extremely detailed hand-made chairs that are just as expensive as an IH doll. It's all up to you :).

I recommend building a dollhouse. It's a lot of fun and it looks gorgeous!

    12. Is it a full house with different rooms or is it just a bedroom?
It is just a bedroom with a bed, a nightstand, a wardrobe, a desk with chair and a mirror.

      Handmade or bought/custom-made for you?
The room itself was made by me, the bed and the desk also were made by me. The nightstand, the wardrobe and the mirror were bought.

Is it for all of your dolls, regardless of size or do you reserve it for your smaller dolls?
At the beginning it was made for my MSD girl but later my cat took it as her room so now it is only hers xD
I often clean it and take pictures of my dolls in it, but I don't storage my dolls in it.

Does it take up a lot of space? Do you put it away when you're not playing with your dolls to save space?
It doesn't take much space really, because it is located in my attic and there is almost nothing there.

Any tips for us that have space issues?
A big wardrobe would work the same, because my room isn't really big but it is tall, but is complicated to have a dolls' house if you do not have space.

    13. Do you want one (just a bedroom or a full house)? Why or why not?
Not a full house, but I would like to have a themed room for them :).

Would you want one for all of your dolls or just the smaller ones?
I don't have enough space to make doll rooms for all of my incoming dolls and I don't think all of them ''fit'' rooms either. For example, I plan on making a unicorn doll and it feels a little silly to make a room for her, but for my other girl who's going to be an alchemist it would be pretty neat to have a room!

Do you just consider your room to be their room as well?
I guess, since it's where they will be spending most of their time :p.If you've been browsing like myself, what are some cool ones or neat ideas that you've seen?
I have been browsing, but I've never really seen anything to my liking.

Do you think it would be worth the extra expense (buying furniture, getting wallpapers/carpets, keeping it clean, etc)? Why or why not?
Of course! If you do something, do it right ;)!

    14. For those without:

Do you want one (just a bedroom or a full house)? Why or why not?
Have always loved and wanted a dollhouse since being a little kid. So yes, I'd love a full house. I'm actually commissioning a building and furniture at the moment - so I'm excited that my dreams are finally coming true.

Would you want one for all of your dolls or just the smaller ones?
Maybe a room type display cases for my larger ones but a full house for the little ones.

Do you just consider your room to be their room as well?
At the moment their room is my room as well.

If you've been browsing like myself, what are some cool ones or neat ideas that you've seen?
I mostly like modern houses. I saw one that actually doubled as a coffee table. The elaborate house was the base and the roof was the "coffee table."

Do you think it would be worth the extra expense (buying furniture, getting wallpapers/carpets, keeping it clean, etc)? Why or why not?
I guess I don't think of the expense part. If I can afford it I do it, if I can't I don't and save up for it. If it's worth doing because I would enjoy having it then I do it and I don't want to compromise and cut corners. I just save and plan. I consider dollhouses works of art, separate from the dolls themselves so having a beautifully executed miniature would be an amazing display piece.

    15. This thread is amazing!
I really need to gather some time and real ALL of the comments.

But personally, I don't think i'd ever could have a doll house.
Too many dolls I plan to get and the sizes are huge.

    16. I would love to have a dollhouse for my bjds. I am actually researching on how I can pull it off since it is going to be quite big. So I am looking around for pictures that can serve as sort of a pattern or inspiration for this project. I am eyeing my bookshelf to convert it into a dollhouse but I would not know where I'm going to store my books. So for now, it will be a future project.

    17. For those without:
Do you want one (just a bedroom or a full house)? Why or why not?

Yes, I would like a full house. I would prefer to make or assemble it myself.

Would you want one for all of your dolls or just the smaller ones?

Just the smallest ones, otherwise it's too much space.

Do you just consider your room to be their room as well?

      No.

If you've been browsing like myself, what are some cool ones or neat ideas that you've seen?

I think it's already been posted about in this thread, but I saw a thread where someone was working on a witch's cottage for their realpuki.

Do you think it would be worth the extra expense (buying furniture, getting wallpapers/carpets, keeping it clean, etc)? Why or why not?

Yes, because it is fun and beautiful.

    18. I have a dream - of a 1/3 size doll house LOL (which will happen RIGHT after I win the lottery :D) For now, I've rooms for them all over the house. I also have given them most of my living room!

    20. i would love to have a doll house for my dolls, not a full one just bedrooms :)
