1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Doll Magnets and Your Computer

Jul 12, 2009

    1. It's never a good idea to get magnets near your computer, I mean why risk it? Plus cathode tube monitors and tvs (big & heavy, non plasma) can get wrecked as well as swipe cards. Though technically those cards can get ruined by a magnet on your purse too! >_<

    2. Every point about magnets not really being that bad for your computer has already been made. I can see some of the Rare Earth Magnets being a problem if they get directly on the hard drive itself, but even then it takes a rather powerful magnetic field to really do damage.

I do agree that swipe cards are in more danger from magnets than our computers are, at least any modern computers. The case of the computer is made to protect it, after all.

    3. I'm very, very paranoid about expensive things breaking or being damaged (it's a side-effect of being poor. XD) So I don't ever, EVER leaving electronics close together. I never even have my cell phone near my computer.

So, I'd be willing to bet any BJDs I could own in the future wouldn't be allowed near the computer.

    4. I've actually been worrying about this for a long time before getting my girl, I'm really paranoid about my stuff (whether it's expensive or not but even more so if it is)

I don't put her too close to my laptop but once I accidentally put her down behind it and the magnets in her headcap didn't seem to do anything to my laptop (I'm not going to make it habit of it though and generally keep the two away from each other)

    5. My laptop (Macbook) actually has a magnet in the charging port, as the charger sticks to the hole with a magnet. Therefore, I'm not really concerned about the dolly magnets, as this charger magnet is a lot stronger than any dolly magnet I've hitherto encountered. I mean, if the charger magnet can be this close to the hard-drive without causing any harm, why shouldn't the much weaker dolly magnets be able to?

    6. your safe, HDD are shielded from stray magnetic interference, unless you dumped a large speaker magnet or sizable neo/rare earth magnet on it for a decent time chances of any effects are zero

interesting fact, there is also two sizable neodymium magnets inside the hard drive itself that are used to to control the arm that skims the disk surface.

i've spent many days with laptops sitting next to massive speaker magnets, as repairing speakers is something i do, i mean you wouldn't sit the thing on top of it though, and while the top and bottom plates are on the magnetic field is controlled a lot, having bare magnets would be worse.

you have speakers with magnets in your laptop and that's true but those speakers are also shielded.

crt monitors are effected but so are all older tv's with crt tubes, degaussing will remove that (or switching off and on again) or a degaussing wand for tough ones.

and bank cards are wiped so easy....be careful with those

    7. i just don't lay them on the keyboard.

    8. I feel guilty now :sweat I have a macbook and I frequently let my tinies stand on it. It's great when the charger magnet catches their feet. There's also a magnet in the front, to the right of the mouse patch thing. I've used that for everything. As I've said before, I paid enough for the laptop, I'm gonna use every bit of it. Er, anyways, I've used that magnet to hold needles when sewing, as well as practicing balancing my pukis there. I HAVE hit that spot that turns a macbook off before though. After the third or fourth time I figured out it must be what I was doing.

    9. Depends on the electromagentic field, but I would advice since the doll's magnets are small to keep it on a distance around 50cm. Most magnets are as strong as fridge magnets are and I know those do nothing to a computer. you can always have a policy to avoid it, specially on movable devices like laptops

    10. I don't know much about computers but it's probably best not to have a doll near a computer for more than just that reason.

    11. I thought that was a myth since I've seen people in offices having magnets stuck to their computers like with company names...And I've stuck my small dolls on my desktop when my laptop was in the shop for a brief time because I needed somewhere safe to place them.

    12. I do try my best to keep any STRONG magnets away from the computer. In high school, I once erased an entire floppy disk by having it too close to my Walkman, which apparently had magnets in the speakers. I had a report and half a novel on the disk. Luckily, my computer teacher was able to salvage the report and most of the novel. Of course, this was almost 20 years ago, so possibly computers and such are better-shielded against magnetic influence than they used to be. Still, no sense taking chances, especially with those very strong earth magnets companies like Soom and Fairyland seem to favor. Size doesn't matter; the strength of the magnet makes all the difference.
