Doll Names : Orginality vs Characters

Sep 16, 2007

    1. While I only have "original" dolls, I will admit that I've wanted to make a tiny Nightcrawler just for the fun of having him.

As far as names to, many of mine are just ones off the top of my head based on my personal characters. And it's totally possible that many will relate them to popular characters or such. Even though he's yet to be in doll form, I've already had comments about Jacob. But I guess that's to be expected.

    2. I don't believe in 'character names/dolls'...though I do have the wish to get a tanned male to name after an RP character of mine, but I view that still as an orginal since the character was made from my mind anyways.
It's true, original dolls are much easier/freer to deal with, like with what you brought up with the wig change. Once you change a character dolls hair they're no longer that character, but if it's an original doll then you can just simply state they got a cut/extensions and dye job, simple as that :3nodding:
Plus, when it comes to personality, with character dolls it's like you're pushing away the personality they could have and giving them one that doesn't truely and deeply suit them. But with originals, they form their own after abit or even right away, and that's what's exciting for me, to see how they'll turn out when you get them out of their boxes :D
So, all in all, I'm not a 'character doll' lover, but an original one :)

    3. Hmm, well all mine are original "characters", I guess. I have had dolls that I've loosely based on fictional characters from movies or anime, but I never let them get *that* tied up in it. Maybe I'm just not that passionate about any specific character. I consider it on a cosplay level even if resemblance to that character was my primary attraction to the doll.

As to names I tend to leave a doll with its company name if I A) *love* the name, or B) *love* the name and the doll isn't some specific character that has its own name already. Heh.

      Raven

    4. i have one doll based off a tv character. I have run several minimee head orders for the Beast character from Beauty and the Beast. There are now 30 heads of this dude out there. Because of that, my Vincent head became an original character because I couldnt handle him having 29 clones!

    5. While I don't have a doll based on a character, it's understandable why some have them. It's about "owning" a character, in my opinion. Making a doll into Yoda means that in a way, Yoda belongs to you. That's a cool thought, you know?

My doll will be an original character: I enjoy the idea of having an original character because she is a piece of something I want or like.

Also, the idea of creating something is very powerful.

    6. As of right now, all I have is a character doll. She is off-topic, so I can't really talk about her, but she is not an original character or anything--just someone someone else made up. I love her.

I think for me, it depends on what I am going for. If I see a sweet, cute little BJD, I'd want to love it, change it up, and give them a name. If they happen to fit a character I'd like to make into a doll, that's fantastic as well.

For me, it's just liking what I like.

    7. In my honest opinion, I prefer dolls made from my own mind, cause if it's an anime character and I want to follow it, I am bound by restrictions, where as original characters, you can let you mind free, anything on the doll is from your pure mind and that is the beauty cause if you want it exactly like the anime or manga, there really are some things you can't do. So originality is what I always aim for.

    8. My dolls' names come from characters usually... but their personalities are all their own. They don't fit into the confines of their names.

Some of the names I recycle because I like them. Example would be Julian. I love that name. I remember an Anne Rice character named Julian (and there's a Star Trek character with that name... Julian Bashir), but I just like the sound of it and have used it in RP. So, of course, one of my BBBs is named Julian.

And then there's my favorite Shakespeare female name, Ophelia. So one of my dolls is named Ophelia.

I think my most original doll name is Pualani. But it's just a couple of Hawaiian words strung together. "Pua" and "Lani." "Flower" and "Sky" meaning "Sky Flower." I tested the name on some of my ohana... "I named her Pualani." "Sky Flower? How pretty!"

    9. All my dolls portray my original characters, which has their original names, not so popular nor between real people nor fictional characters.

Shaltie - half dog, half little girl
Astrid - blind young woman from Denmark
      Ida - her Italian lover

But this is only a start. Maybe someday I will have dolls, named by some anime characters I really like.

    10. Both of my dolls are going to be original, but one is getting a look that will have a strong resemblance to an original fan character I came up with some time back that's near and dear to my heart. I wasn't planning to make either doll into a fan-character or a favorite from a show or anything, but I kept seeing items in shops that very closely matched what she wore.

It's adding a new dimension to my upcoming doll, and having her be set as a character I love so much is really making me cherish her more than I had before when I was simply finding random pretty things to try to make a character out of. I understand why people make dolls into an already set character now. You really bond with a doll that way.

    11. The characters I have dolls of started as my originals in my novel. Then at a friends request I fused them in with an RP community. Now they're dolls and back to my characters but have their RP names because everyone knows then by those titles and Im not quite ready to release their true names in my novel until Im closer to completing it. ^_^;

Oops! My Bi is an exception to all that, haha. I need my coffee and he needs an alias. XD

    12. The main reason I want BJDs is to model them off my own original characters~ <3

Personally, to me, people who have character dolls modeled off anime characters or whatever... it seems like a big copout. I always feel like they couldn't be bothered to think up their own original story and character. I know some people aren't into OCs, and I know people who don't think they're imaginative enough to even HAVE an OC (or, haha, maybe their OCs are so Mary Sue that they shouldn't even be ALLOWED to have one), but really.... Most of my characters were created in literally seconds. All you need is a vague concept, and then you can build anything onto that. Having a character doll is like character theft, almost, and it destroys the whole creative process of making your own OC come to life.

Making a doll COSPLAY as a character is fine, and cool by me, but... idk. I'd never make myself a character BJD. One time I thought "man, it would be cool to have the whole Kuroshitsuji cast 8D" but I wouldn't act on that, because they're not mine, and only the author of Kuroshitsuji knows everything about them. I can't pretend to know their personalities, so I wouldn't want to butcher the characters.

As for character dolls modelled off real people (not talking about actors or anything, but the actual real person as themself, ie. band members or something).... that just sort of creeps me out. Imagine if someone had a poseable, anatomically correct doll of YOU that they dressed and undressed and played with. .___.
To me, it feels like they're pushing their obsession with someone too far, even if it's harmless and innocent. :\

TD'LR I don't like character dolls in theory, but I suppose it really comes down to how well it's pulled off, and the actual character. A Twilight character doll? I'll press back as soon as I see it. If it comes from a series I like, MAYBE I'll be okay with it.
In the end, I MUCH more prefer OC dolls. <3 Even though I don't have my BJDs yet, I KNOW the satisfaction and love I'll get from having my favourite OC as a 3d beautiful doll will be amazing. :3

    13. I plan to have all original doll characters. Some are based off the doll and some are based off the people who live in my head. Only one will resemble a character.

      My doll plan:
DZ Aleister will remain Aleister. This is in respect for the name (after a good Mr. Crowley, I believe) and because I can think of nothing but "Oh, that's Aleister" when I see that particular doll.

AoD ni ni just screams the name "Ange" when I see her. I think it has something to do with the red wig and blue eyes in her photos on the official site. I can't imagine her with anything else. "Ange" is the name of a character in Umineko: When they Cry. However, I don't think that I will dress her up as the character.

Bobobie Ariel/Sprite will be named Kasami. This is for my oldest character, and she will be modded to match her.

I also have considered buying a tan doll and having a Theif king bakura doll, but one hasn't caught my eye yet.

I can't seem to find names for my offtopic dolls though. D:
So, I'm all over the spectrum.

    14. My dolls are currently all original characters. I enjoy seeing character dolls, but it just isn't something I personally want to do with mine. Their names are certainly not unique: Xiaoyi is a pretty common name, even if it isn't so in the Western world. Likewise, Leloi's "Pualani" is quite (if not very) unusual in North America, but it certainly isn't in Hawai'i!

I think it's intent that really matters. I wouldn't be bothered by others that wanted to name their dolls Xiaoyi, I would be bothered by those who copied her completely, down to character backstories and such.

    15. I have one doll I plan to eventually make into a character doll, but that's it out of the lot of them. Well, character other than one sprung from the strange innards of my brain, that is.

The one I'm considering is WS Sabik Elf, as Vampire Hunter D. Oh come on, I can't be the only one that sees that match as perfect! It has less to do with the character, and more to do with the fact that I absolutely and completely adore the paintings of the character, and have for more than half my life at this point. (And I am old.)

Names are names. I don't tend to notice the names other people use, so I doubt I would even notice if someone doubled up on one I did, or if I was doubling up on someone else. If someone said something about it -- and I'd certainly invite them to! -- how I'd react would likely depend on how sensible or ridiculous I found the issue. "Hey, I own the name Joe, you can't use that! It doesn't matter that yours is a goth and mine's a steampunk and they are different companies and genders and sizes!" is going to get laughed off, fast. "You know, I named my (same sculpt) X, and was going in the same direction with him, can we sort this out?" is an entirely different animal, and sensible enough.

    16. Doll Names : Orginality vs Characters
Hello everyone this has been making me think for a while but I was wondering what people thought of it.

On the one hand you have character-based dolls. Now I'm not talking about originals, I'm talking about dolls that are purposely modeled and named after anime/manga, movies, books, comic books, tv shows, bands, models, etc you get the point.

To owners of these dolls: Why do you enjoy character based dolls? Have you also had a character based doll that ended up turning into an original?

Also we have dolls that are completely original, either based on people's original RP characters or just put together however they want and named as they see fit.

To owners of these dolls: Why do you enjoy original dolls? Do you find it distressing or upsetting when people emulate your original doll or copy his/her name without asking? Or do you feel names are just names and are up for grabs.

Orginality all the way. You have more freedom over every thing and dont have to ask your self would char X where this or not. It can rub me the wrong way when I work hard to make a char and read about names that they just use it with out care or under standing of all your work.

    17. Character Dolls

All of my dolls' names come from either books or Myth that I love. I don't try to re create the character, I just find the name pleasing. From then on I mold the character into my own....

      Examples:
Nefret and Ramses were from the Elizabeth Peters's books.
I love Egypt and so Nut, Serapis and Selket all came from that train of thought.

Kisten, I'm not sure where it came from. I love Shakesphere and so Kisten's middle name Oberon came from that.

Nefret and Kisten's last name, Aufleur...is just something pretty; as is the last name Mort de Lys (deathlily).

All the members of the Mort de Lys family have names whose meanings play into their last names...

      Bellamy (beautiful death lily)
      Benoit (stone death lily)
Rufus La valle (red death lilly of the valley)
      and so on.

So I guess I like old English, French and Egyptian names. I don't care if they are original or not.

    18. Why do you enjoy original dolls?
I enjoy them for a few reasons. First off, I feel they're more my own. They fit me better. And i can do what I want with them. I feel like with character dolls, no matter how hard you try, you'll never emulate that character perfectly, and in the end you're just bastardizing someone elses creation.

Do you find it distressing or upsetting when people emulate your original doll or copy his/her name without asking?
Nope. I don't think there's room for true originality anymore. Someone who thinks like you, is going to come up with similar ideas. So, eventually, you're going to come across someone whose dolls look like yours, or are named the same thing.

Or do you feel names are just names and are up for grabs.
      Pretty much,

I've also noticed with orignal dolls certain names have been 'retired' persay. I mean within the doll community you say the name of a certain doll and everyone knows exactly which doll you're talking about and the owner. Do you feel it right to name your doll after a so called 'famous doll' or do you think it will just cause confusion?
If you like the name, why not? It's not like you're aiming to be "That Doll" just because you like the name.

    19. How do you guys come up with these amazing names. You're giving me stage fright thinking up a good name for my first doll.

    20. i only have origanol names so far, and i base characters off of my dollies.
personally, i dont care if someones doll has the same name as mine, its kinda cool. And who knows, maybe they had thiers before yours, so naames r up for grabs to me. and its not like id tell them "HEY! U STOLE MY DOLLIES NAME!!!! CHANGE IT NOW, COPYCAT!!!" then theyd assume i was 3.
      my lovely girls are
mischa- calm, cursed, quiet, conserved, and beautiful, also friendly, but tends to overreact.
miuki-miu for short- energetic, overreacts, happy, bubbly, lolita lover, cutie, oddball, japan lover, friendly, pushy, and definetley talks a lot. shes so stubborn.

now, if someone totally copys my character, i may get pissed, like thier history, doll, name and personality(also age). That would make me think that they have no creativity and personallity.
