Doll Size and Bonding?

Jan 21, 2013

    1. Size is an issue... I found out the hard way that I really can't bond with real small tinies, like, in the 15cm range.
Nooope, not for me. I think I always grew up wishing my dolls were bigger, and posed better...

So I'm naturally more interested in larger dolls. I started with a mini, then got a 70cm.
So far I own no dolls in the standard SD size range.

But with the sizes I can work with, further bonding has been more about the character.
I'd never part with my boys, but Adam is the only one I can sit down and actively cuddle the heck out of...
But it has nothing to do with his size, I actually wish all my 70cm guys were shorter.

    2. I really enjoy MSD & YOSD sized dolls bc they have such cute outfits & sweet innocent faces :)

However I really love the beauty of SD sized dolls, & they have some of the better outfits.

    3. I love tiny things, I always have; so I naturally gravitate towards smaller BJDs. I also prefer child-like, "cute" or stylised dolls, rather than mature, "sexy" or realistic dolls; so I've found that MSD and smaller are best suited to my own preferences. Personally, my favourite size is Yosd, easy to hold and take with you, but big enough to make an impression and nice to sew for without getting too fiddly. Pukifees follow very closely in my favourites, I took one on holiday last year and it was great to just pop her out, get a few quick snaps and tuck her away again! X3

MSD sized dolls I have some difficulty with, mostly because I'm just really picky. Of my 3 "MSD" sized dolls, only one is a normal size and he has a pretty standard, boyish wardrobe... My girls are odd sized for MSD, one being very thin (but with a large bust) and the other pear-shaped, so clothing shopping is not very easy... I'd sometimes like a normal sized MSD girl, just so she can wear all the 'dud' clothes that don't fit the others! XD

Recently, I've only just got my first proper "SD" sized doll (or part thereof, she's just a head awaiting a body currently) I'm a little nervous that her size and weight will put me off doing much with her, since she's considerably less "travel-sized" than my other dolls, but I don't want to assume anything before she's all put together~ >w< I already love how many options there are for clothing and shoe styles! And I enjoy cuddling other peoples SDs at meetups, so I think I'm gonna be pretty happy with her~:aheartbea

    4. i'm replying from a mobile device at this point in time...the cut and paste feature and tiny screen dose not work too well.....^^;

    5. And Who knows maybe a SD in the mix is just what you need!

    6. Small dolls are cute, but I gravitate towards mature looking 60-70cm dolls.

    7. I've always preferred SDs because I like their mature look, but I tried owning a tiny and I just didn't bond with him. I do believe that his size was part, if not most, of the reason why I didn't bond. I did like him, but I never did anything with him. I would, however, like own an MSD in the future.

    8. For a long time, I thought MSDs were the perfect sized-dolls for me, because anything bigger than them would be too difficult to handle or put away when necessary; also, I've always liked the idea of having a smaller doll. I imagined bigger dolls would be "clumsy" and too heavy for my taste.

But in the end, I bought a MSD, and had the opportunity to compare her to some beautiful SD dolls; and that made me realize that 40-50cm BJDs were actually not that interesting for me.
It's curious, because I collect other dolls that are even smaller than MSDs and I've never liked them less because of their size - however, when it comes to BJDs, for some reason, it's different.

So, today, I can say that I certainly find it easier to bond with SD dolls, so their size is something I consider important.
I don't care much about the more mature looks, though...

    9. I think I like a variety of sizes, at least to a point.
I started with just MSDs and loved them. They're small, cute, easy to carry around and they pose wonderfully. But I just got my first SD and I loooooove her to bits. It's so much nicer to sew for her than my MSDs and I love the weight to her. She's so cuddly :)

That said, I don't think I could do smaller than MSD. I'm not that into "child-like" dolls. Larger than 60cm, I'm not sure. We'll see.

    10. When I first started, I wanted the 60cm dolls. Then that love transferred to 70cm dolls.
Fast-forward four years, and I've started thinking "if only they weren't so big, I'd play with them more."
I play with my action figures all the time, after all, but they barely reach the underside of an SD's kneecap. So now, I would say I'm looking for tinies or smaller MSDs.

    11. Size has never been a factor in my not bonding with a doll.

    12. I started out with SD10 and SD13 and would only buy big dolls for years. I carried one around and sat with it in my lap and after a few hours its really heavy, but I still liked the big ones. My taste changed and then I liked small dolls. My favorite size is MSD and Yo SD. They also take up less space and it's easier to get furniture, etc to create a doll space.

    13. I like my smaller dolls (I have everything from a 70cm Superhero EID to a 1/12th scale Banji in my collection-), but my favorites are all 1/3-scale.

    14. Size doesn't really affect bonding much for me - the character dictates that - but I do have a favorite size. I've got a tiny, MSD, 60cm and 70cm, and I by far prefer the size and weight of my 70cm to the others. My favorite doll is still my MSD, but I do wish he was a little bit bigger now. Ah well. :)

    15. My first doll was an MSD, because I wanted a mature doll, but thought an SD would be too big. I just didn't fall for her though, and stayed away from the hobby for two years. I then decided to get into the hobby again, and ended up buying an SD and a Pukifee... and when I opened the boxes I fell in love. MSD is just not the size for me.

    16. size is not an issue for me to bond with a doll, so far i only own 3 and i LOVE them to pieces!! i've been extremely lucky in getting from them what i was originally expecting when i purchased them, and more!! to me is a matter of skin tones and aesthetics that decide whether i will bond with the doll or not. for example, when i purchased my soom shoshon he wasn't available in normal or bronze skin. my only choice was white, and for him it's a big NOOOO! my dream was to have been able to get a bronze one, but then the only way to get him in such tone was to order a second doll and cross their heads in the order since soom stated that they wouldn't recreate an original MD doll. i chose hyperon, but hyperon was a BIG NO in bronze for me, he had to be NS and so i ended up purchasing them both in NS...for the entire 6 months that i waited i worried that i would not be able to bond with shoshon once i received them if his skin was way too clear or if the wig i'd chosen turned out to be a washed out blonde and the make up too light. and even thought about selling him if that was the case and maybe hunt down a bronze one in the market later. to my great, great surprise my shoshon turned out to be more beautiful than i expected! the wig went soooo perfect with him and his character! in all honesty i love everything about him!!! and now i know i will never part ways with him. which makes me happy to have been rewarded after the amount of money i paid for him.

    17. First, thank you for introducing me to the world of BJDs! My first doll is Melissa from Impldoll. The one on their site attracted me, but I ordered her in normal skin, not the tan. I had seen someone else's in tan and she was much darker than on the website. When she finally came, I wasn't sure I liked her, because she looked so different with pale skin. However, I've been working on clothing for her, and I'm getting to like her more and more. Her character is starting to come out, and I think I will be making late 1800s clothing for her...after I finish this damn Tardis dress! :D

    18. I have mostly SD sized dolls, mainly because their larger size makes sewing for them easier... also because they look like actual adults, whereas MSD and smaller tend to look like kids. The bonding issues I've had have had less to do with size and more to do with the actual features of the doll, the way the body moves, posability, that kind of thing.
