1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Doll Tumblr for pretty BJDs (updated to be less offensive X__x)

Jun 17, 2011

    1. I'm moving this thread over to Debate, because it seems to be mostly about debating the legality and ethics of the tumblr log.

      Let's keep it friendly, folks.

    2. to me there is a whole difference between posting a picture and only saying "it's not mine" and actually linking back to original source. if someone posted one of my picture on their blog and only wrote "I don't own this, lol" I would ask to either post a link to my gallery or remove my picture from his/her blog. as long as proper credit is given, I do not mind reposting ^^
      but Deni, I understand why you posted this. if my picture was posted somewhere else I would like to know (cuz I like to know everything). and I know this is not meant to be debate but I felt like saying my opinion anyway xD;

    3. I actually found out my photos were featured through flickr its self. I check up on my stats occasionally because I like to see where people are seeing my pictures. I also like to see what google searches people have done to end up seeing my photos as well. So occasionally I'll see it's from this tumblr, click through and see it's one of my photos featured on it. Every time it links right back to the original image.

Also, people seem to think when it's up there it's there for good. Every time someone's kicked up a fuss they remove the image. I'm sure if you politely asked them they'd do the same. I don't actually know who runs it but they seem lovely and polite and happy to remove the image if you're not happy. There's no need to go on all guns blazing though.

    4. Kymera I think honestly because she figures anyone would be grateful to have their work featured like that. It's a wonderful surprise to log on and find your art has been selected. If it was something like an original idea or a super creative think outside the box idea I didn't want someone copying I could post in the image description something along the lines of please do not feature, repost, etc. However they are just doll pictures. I love my doll and I love photography but really it's not that big of a deal.

It takes a few minutes for the blogger to write that email but she would be writing emails all day long. It's easier for her to do what shes doing (click the image to find it's source) and the few people who don't want their art featured to send a polite email requesting it's removal. Than making a career out of sending carefully worded emails every day to ask. Probably takes the joy out of it for her as well. Shes not making money from this shes just getting joy out of beautiful art and dolls.

    5. I'd like to point out that if it's wrong to repost photos, any photos anywhere, then it's also wrong to repost company photos here on DoA. But reposting company photos seems to be tacitly endorsed as long as they're not hotlinked. By these arguments, those photos should only be reposted here by a company rep or licensee and not by the first member to come across them. Seems a tad hypocritical to condemn one practice but not the other.

Pay the fee, fill out the paperwork, and register your photos. Then you'll have a leg to stand on in a lawsuit.

    6. I don't think people are trying to go all guns blazing, and it's nice that she wants to showcase people's art/dolls, I certainly wouldn't bite her head off for it. And it's great that she's not claiming these as her own, etc. my point is, it doesn't hurt to ask/ let the owner of the picture know you'd like to showcase them. As it was mentioned the least they can say is no. And from the looks of things most people would say yes. I mean I would, not that she'd ever ask or add one of my pictures. xD Generally speaking I wouldn't have a problem with people wanting to repost my stuff with credit of course. But it really is nice to know where you're stuff is going. And if you really like someone and respect there work that much, I think it's the least anyone can do.

    7. I think that it is never right to steal something and claim it as your own- it's not a good thing to take something and not leave credit, even if you don't claim it as your own. And on the internet, the most we can hope for is for someone to leave credit to our site or name and hope that those who see it are so captivated that they will seek out the rest of our work.

If, for whatever reason, I found an image of mine posted with credit that I wasn't comfortable sharing on a certain site, I would politely ask the person to remove it. I think it's just as bad to have posted something without asking as it is for someone to rip you a new one for "daring to steal their work". Whenever I see artists or supporters throwing hissy fits over it, I lose all respect for them and no longer care about the person as an artist or their dolls, no matter how gorgeous they may be.

You can talk until you're blue in the fact about copyright laws, but not all countries have the same laws, nor are all countries in alliance with each other on those laws.

Also, how is the original doll owner not protected? What if they gave permission for their doll to be photographed only to find it posted on the internet without credit to them? Can they not legally ask for it to be taken down? It would seem to me they could, but another post here said that it was nice to leave credit for the doll owner, but not required? That doesn't make sense at all.

And then, what about leaving credit to the doll company or sculpter? Sure, we bought the product, but why shouldn't they be credited, too? And the face-up artists, and the person who made the clothes and eyes and wig...

There are enough people out there legitimately stealing art for profit, and some of these people haven't been brought to justice, but a lot haven't... because we're too busy being vigilantes. I don't know, it seems like a waste of time to me.

    8. A lot of people do credit the artists, tailors, etc. who went into making their doll what they are. Anyone who writes their doll's make and model in the title of their thread is crediting the company.

Here's a form letter for a repost request. All you need to do is swap out the name of the person you are writing to and copy in the link to the image you want to repost - then hit send. I release this letter to the Public Domain, so anyone may use it.

    9. I know someone mentioned it before, but a lot of photo sites (Flickr is included) apparently have the right to redistribute your photos for commercial purposes, and you may never know it. A woman's family portrait was used in an advertisement in another country, and she never knew until a friend of her's saw the add on a building.

Also, I have seen websites that have a feature that prevents right-clicking, so no one can try to copy their pictures.

Also: in 2010, Tumblr has allowed people to put outside photos on their blogs, which is why they have the ever handy "source" box, so that the person can input the original URL (which will create a click-though link, if a photo, and a second link if anything else). This makes me confused a little; how can Tumblr allow people to do the same thing that they say they're not letting people do? It clearly allows outside content:

My only guess is that if someone posts something that isn't theirs, they have to credit the original owner (to the best of their ability, because sometimes you can't tell at all), or risk their content being removed - which is perfectly acceptable to me. It's very much frowned upon (at least as far as I know in my Tumblr circle) if someone doesn't credit the original owner. At the same time, it might be pretty difficult to find the original owner. Some pictures get thousands of reblogs, and one may never know if the original is truly the original. You may have thought you DID ask the original owner for permission, but find out that they don't own that picture.

    10. Oohhh BOY. This sort of thing is why I just really won't post my photos to Den of Angels.

I'm of the opinion that I realllllllly don't like having anyone else repost my works, personally.

:\ I understand that the attitude that 'oh there's credit/link so it's okay' is rampant and alarmingly growing, but I really have to wonder if these images have been properly asked for?

Did the original artist even receive notification that they had a picture reposted? I don't have a problem with being able to ask nicely that the photo be removed, I agree there's no need to throw a hissyfit. But here's the catch-fall. How the heck is an artist supposed to ask when they have no idea that their work has been reposted?

    11. You know, because this girl isn't using these pictures for profit and I'm not loosing money because she might use a picture I took, I don't have a problem with it. Copyright is a wonderful thing, but this is a situation where I don't think it is necessary to claim that right.

EDIT: I have to deal with copyright on a daily basis because of my job, so I DO know what I'm talking about and I do know how it feels when people take your work and use it to make profit. I just don't think this is that kind of situation. I'd actually be flattered if one of my pictures were on that site: apparently people would enjoy them.

    12. ^And you're right that they're not being used for profit. I don't own the site or anything, but I do follow a lot of BJD owners, and some BJD themed blogs, and all the themed blogs are doing is admiring the work, and skill that went into the photos and the doll. There is one, I should warn, that seems to be mocking bad face-ups (I don't follow that one) but I should also say that because I don't follow them, I don't know if they work on submissions from original owners or not. They post pretty infrequently.

In a lot of things (not used for profit) all that's needed is a citation - I can point out that my college papers only require a citation, otherwise there are severe penalties for plagiarizing.

    13. When I first saw this thread, I was assuming that the blog in question was one mocking BJDs owners and using the work "pretty" as sarcasm. After looking at the site, I personally wouldn't have a problem if my pictures were used, but then again I don't put the same effort into my photography that some here obviously do. I suppose I can see why people who may have spent hours working on a photoshoot may wish for the blogger to ask their permission first. If I greatly valued my photography and wanted to be sure I was credited, I'd put a prominant watermark on all my flickr pics. That way, people would see your name of the pics without having to look for the original source.

I think this would be far worse if the blog was about "ugly" BJDs and mocked certain owner pics.

    14. As someone who has a tumblr log about bjds I thought about this question a lot! I have to admit, whenever I reblog a picture I don't really pay that much attention to the credits in the description. I just checked my latest entries though, all of the pictures at least have source links to them but you need a couple of clicks to come to the entry of the person who posted it first to see it.

Whenever I find a picture I like I add a link to the owner's flickr page. Most of the time I even write them a pm to let them know I posted their work. All of the people I messaged were really supportive though, I have never had anyone asking me to delete a post.

However, there's two sides to this issue. When you post a photo to bash the face-up for example it's a different story!

    15. I think its flattering that they've featured my photography there. I have absolutely no problem with it, because they linked back to my flickr. Its just a collection- they haven't attempted to claim my (or anyone else's) work as their own.
I also enjoyed looking through it and seeing all the other pictures lumped together~

    16. On a personal level, this is where I am on it, too. I generally consider doll photos, to some extent, in the same category as 'fan art'. It's not something we're likely to be doing for profit as the photos themselves without special permissions/licensing from the company -- it's a 'fan picture' of the doll. I actually have no issues with fan art. While credit is something I find personally necessary even in this regard and permission from the artist is something I also consider preferable if not outright necessary, fan art isn't a profit-making venture in most cases, and it is intended to be shared and enjoyed by fellow fans. There's no knee-jerk 'nooooooooooooooo!' to means to do so from my end.

I do have issues with the attitude that says, 'It got posted to the internet by someone, so it's now mine to do whatever I like with it and no one has any right to complain, no matter what I do with it'. That's a hopelessly wrong-headed notion.

    17. Worry more about the dozen other tumblr blogs who post your BJD photos and DON'T bother to provide click thru credit. The tumblr blog in question is one of the few who, when you take the culture of tumblr into consideration as a whole into context, is "doing it right." Flickr has an option right in your account preferences where you can disable people's ability to share images on tumblr/other services and the maintainer of said blog has said before she doesn't work around that. She also politely and quickly removes posts when the doll owner/photographers request it. Is it perfect? No, not at all, but it's a d*** sight better then what most other people do out there. There's been at least three tumblr's off the top of my head that refused to give credit and ended up finally deleting them because enough BJD owners flooded their 'inbox' with messages about the common courtesy of credit.

And while I personally would yes, prefer she added a text line & link to credit, on tumblr it is all too easy and far too common for people who "reblog" them to remove that line and then leave no credit whatsoever on the picture.

    18. Even though I own a tumblr I hardly post bjd photos due to the discussed reasons. I think I only posted once, with credit and all, but I'm stull ready to remove anytime if the owner dislikes it. I see a lot of stuff on tumblr being posted without any credit, so I use tineye all the time if I need more details.

But when I myself openly post my own stuff on the Internet I'm always ready to have it stolen and posted everywhere uncredited. It doesn't scare me much, I think it's some sort of responsibility you have to bear with anyway. I try not to worry and believe in karma. :)

    19. I did, at one point, notice a lot of BJD-related Tumblr blogs deactivate or slow down.

    20. This doesn't bother me at all! I mean, if they give credit to the owner then whats the big deal? I'm sure most people are proud of their dolls and don't care who see's it. Plus, i bet most people who follow that tumblr account ARE BJD owners. If my doll got put on there i would be happy :D
