Dollies and Social Networking: Fun, or Just Wrong?

Feb 9, 2010

    1. I love this idea. I plan on getting my first doll soon, and I do want to set up a myspace for her.

    2. I don't have my doll up on any websites only pictures of her showing her off that she is mine. lol
But I never role play her. I thought about it but I'd just feel to weird. She is her own character.
I don't want to "play" her. It would feel like im invading her.

I find it a bit annoying when role play people talk to me on those websites, when clearly
I'm not role playing at all. I'm just my real self. I doesn't feel like I'm talking to "somebody".

I'm not against it though. Whatever makes you happy, do it.

    3. its not cool for a guy to do that lol
      plus Clover's character doesn't talk

    4. My Ariana has a network with blogging and stuff that's she's a part of. I find it somewhat fun really, giving her a personality. I'd say it only goes so far if people thought she was actually real lol then I'd be like... uhm she's just a doll/character. I believe it's fun as long as everyone is aware it's just for fun and RPG'n. I don't mind "roleplaying" my dolls because that's really the only way they can interact with others directly.

    5. I don't have a doll yet so I couldn't really say, but I think it's cool to have a Facebook or Myspace pagey for a doll!

Not to go off on too big of a tangent, but there is a lady here in the UK named Kittypinkstars who makes these adorable 'creatures' out of socks and sells them on Etsy (I bought one...he's ADORABLE), and I have seen MUCHO people (including myself) make Myspace pages for their sock creatures (they are pretty popular!) Its a great creative way to keep in contact with a circle of close friends! Our sock babies bring us together!

      OKAY back to dolls! :)

Social networking for dollies may not be for everyone, but I say if you and your doll are feelin' it, then go for it!

    6. While I personally find the concept a bit awkward, I suppose there is no real harm in it!

And there are certainly odder things out there on the internet, to say the least.

    7. I talk about dolls, debate doll topics, play with dolls, etc. but never have I created a "character". I let the dolls I have speak for themselves and don't feel it's necessary for me to create personalities or give them a literal voice. But, others collect dolls differently and want to define their dolls as characters. I think it's one of the aspects of the hobby that makes it more interesting. If someone is interested in creating a character facebook or other site I would encourage it even if it isn't something I'd do myself. I admire the creativity involved in the process and think it's a very modern way to enjoy dolls more for some people.

    8. I roleplay all the time and have quite the slew of characters, but my doll is separate.

This is actually quite a tweest for me, because I originally bought him to represent one of my characters. Instead, he ended up becoming his own guy - not much of a personality, but I plan to spoil him silly and have him "cosplay" my characters instead (until I get a body for my floating head and assign him a character to mimic, anyway). He's basically the most awesome little model I could ask for. I'm sure he'll develop a personality eventually (especially when I start getting him more stuff).

Anyway, with his personality as thin as it is, he still is definitely not the type to do social networking. Neither am I. So, in NOT making one for him, I AM having him "participate", if that makes any sense. Hahaha. I do want a doll with a character that WILL do it, though. I think it's fun, and my stick-in-the-mud here is a pretty boring fellow.

    9. *Wow, really? That never occurred to me! I have a really short attention span for social networking sites in general, and I don't think I'd read a facebook/myspace/twitter "run by" a doll. It's not really on my list of interests with my dolls, but I think it's awesome that people use those sites as a creative outlet.

*Please read this with a :XD: and not a  !

    10. I'm not into dolls and fictional characters being on human social networking sites; it seems like an abuse of what those sites are actually intended for and it further dilutes a lot of the already questionable usefulness. I think for some it may actually be a violation of the ToS...?

Doll-only social networking sounds like a fun way to roleplay, but seems like it could be a barrier to getting to know real people. I'd rather make friends with a person than have my fictional construct make friends with their fictional construct.

I guess overall I'm just not into dolls having first-person social networking/blogs. I don't think I'd read one because it would feel too intimate, like I was learning way too much about that person's fantasies without actually knowing the person at all.

    11. I don't roleplay my dolls' character...
For the fun of it I once I thought perhaps I can do a twitter. Then I thought, well what would I write about?

*Tomato spent the whole day staring into space.

Not very fun now is it?

    12. I think I'm somewhere in the middle in this one.

I have a Facebook account mainly to keep in touch with relatives and friends that dont stay close to home, and I only really update when I feel like its important enough to share with them. I do have all my dolly photos in their own album on FB and I do give updates on wether I'm waiting for an arrival or if theyv arrived, but thats pretty much it - I don't see that site as a place where doll-role-playing would be appreciated/acceptable/some word im having trouble to think of . . .
It's nice when people I know take the time to comment on those pics or updates cos it shows they appreciate my hobby however weird it seems to them but I wouldn't overdo it by suddenly bringing the doll's persona into conversations with them - it's like they should be two seperate areas of my life, if that makes sense?.

I do have a bebo profile for one of my dolls, when I got him a lot of my friends joked that he should have one and how funny it would be . . . and I got bored one night and made it. I don't see it as being serious though - this is his, and it's him that "talks" on it, but only my friends have access to this profile and like me they see it as a bit of harmless fun. If others have done something similar to this then fair enough to them since its all fun, but I cant see it being quite right if its taken too seriously and if people they dont know are interacting with this character not knowing if its a bit of fun or not.

The only proper doll-related profile I have is my livejournal, that is strictly my doll's blog and it's they who write it, but I created this to be able to interact solely with other members of the bjd community who also have LJ's. I see this as probably one of the only networking type sites where its most suitable? maybe for showing dolls characters in such a manner outside of doll forums, since at least you are speaking with people who understand the hobby.

(sorry if some bit dont make much sense, its quite a tough thing to think about and to try to word properly late at night)

    13. Clover did the objection point while sitting in a crate of magic cards
      worthy of a tweet lol

    14. I would kind of like to, in the future, but not for any of the dolls in my main story, since they live in a strange, magical world full of demons and angels and whatnot. But ever since I saw someone have their dolls like they were in a band, I wanted to have a few, with some of them having pages like I'm talking about their lives. I'd get to tell their story from their point of view. I like to write, so the creative aspect of speaking as if I were this character is actually pretty enjoyable.

And at least from what I gathered from the ToS of Myspace, it's only a violation if you use these pages to pretend to be someone else, and you never disclose who you are. If you clearly state right on the front page that the pictures are indeed of a doll, and that it's that the page is a parody/story/RP site/fan page, it seems to be allowed. That's why I imagine it's okay for all those networking pages involving their dogs or babies, it's obvious there's not a super intelligent dog typing about how it totally almost got that squirrel today XD

    15. Early on, when I first got my first doll, I made her a facebook, but I never logged on as her and quickly realized how stupid it was. I don't have the time to be two people! I love and respect RPing, but it's too much effort to pretend to be someone else AS WELL as my self.... I am pretty lazy though.

    16. I think its okay if its a place that is all about dolls but I can't imagine me making a facebook page of my own for my dolls a file for dolls yes something else I think it might be a bit much

I hadn't heard of The BJD Network until you all mentioned it but have any of you heard of the sites BJD 4 (US) or Devious Dolls they are both supposed to be social networks for BJD dolls.

    17. No, it doesn't weird me out or anything. I have a mule account on Gaiaonline that I pretend belongs to one of my doll characters. More or less, it's like roleplaying, which is pretty widely accepted. Having it be the character of a doll isn't much different.

And Mistula's Fully Articulated blog belongs to Uno, a doll. He's a pretty famous character from what I know, but I think the concept of his doll band is considered pretty awesome. If you haven't checked it out yet, please do. Then think if it's cool or not (which I think you'll find really cool too.) I've shared it with friends who were hesitant to accept my BJD hobby, and they all love it. So in my opinion, creating these blogs, etc. for doll characters could be pretty beneficial.

    18. I really, really needed a good laugh today. Thank you! :aheartbea

But seriously, how Tomato telling the world he/she spent the world staring into space any less inane that most tweets?

    19. I know people in the Blythe community that have a twitter profile for certain girls. It's obvious to all that the tweets are from a doll and is just a bit of fun really. (I'm new to the BJD world, so don't *know* many people, let alone dolls)
For me, like people have noted before, there are WAY odder things on the internet and if this is something that gives you pleasure and you have the time to do this, why not?
