1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Dolls as an autistic special interest?

Feb 25, 2016

    1. I was so nervous joining this forum, seeing this thread helped to lessen my anxiety!
I have Aspergers along with other disabilities. I guess the first reason why I got interested in BJD is due too my life long interest in anything to do with creation, as of lately I think it also is way for me to escape all my problems in a productive manner.

    2. I have high-functioning autism and MCDD (terminology explanation in case anyone was wondering -- I always say 'I have autism' rather than 'I am autistic', just as I would say 'I have blue eyes' rather than 'I am blue-eyed' -- I feel one characteristic can never define me enough to be something I 'am' as a whole).

I don't know if dolls are a particular special interest of mine. Stories have always fascinated me and yes, my dolls are characters in my stories, but they are also just beautiful things to collect. Collecting all the things is a bit of a habit that I guess is due to my autism (afaik, obtaining a collectible item raises dopamine in the brain and as dopamine levels are lower in autism, it does sort of makes sense that you'd enjoy raising them more).

I don't know if I really care whether they are, either. I happen to like collecting BJDs, so I do. That's enough for me. :)

    3. Wow, I'm so happy I came across this thread! I am autistic as well, and BJDs are definitely one of my special interests. I am also an aspiring writer and love to draw, which ties in very nicely with this hobby, as it helps me develop my characters even further.
It's great to know that there are other people on the spectrum in the hobby! My dolls make for a great creative outlet. Through them, I feel like I can give form to feelings I don't really know how to explain with words, if that makes any sense.
Sometimes I lack the mental energy to give my dolls the attention they deserve, which is frustrating, but I love them very much. My parents used to be pretty unimpressed with my BJDs, since they didn't see the point with them, but now they're very supportive and always listen to me when I talk about doll related things, since they understand that it makes me happy and helps me de-stress.
