Dolls VS Characters

Oct 11, 2013

    1. I've been playing my Sims game for over a year now, and most of my families are reaching their third generation (I love each and every one of them), so yup! Definitely more characters than dolls I plan to own. I do have certain characters that are closer to my heart than others, so they'll be the ones I plan to bring to life, so to speak.

    2. KiyaraSabel I'm w/you - the entire REASON I got into BJDs was to expand my cosplay so to speak. Ergo I created a community of cosplayers (in my head) & shelled those characters into dolls ;D I did pick the sculpts based on how versatile each might be when it comes to cosplay (as in, just HOW many anime characters might an Iplehouse Bichun successfully cosplay?)
So I do have many more characters (both my own AND those I want to cosplay) than dolls :d

    3. I currently have more characters than dolls, and I probably always will. But I plan on buying dolls for my best, most developed characters. Eventually I want to be at a point where I don't need to expand my collection for characters that I already have, but rather I can buy sculpts that I absolutely love but don't technically "need" and create a character for them before they come home. Especially with some LE dolls.

    4. :( i'm nawty and end up buying dolls i have no character for, then I'm forced to make characters for them >.>. Right now, only 2 (3 until recently) of my 18 were characters made before I joined the hobby.

    5. I definitely have more characters than dolls. There's plenty I'd like to shell, though probably no way I'll ever get them all! But that won't stop me from shelling dolls as I find and can afford sculpts to fit them.

Conversely, I also have three dolls who were brought home without any intent for their characters at all. One's developed a strong character, but the other two are still sort of drifting a bit.

    6. My characters and dolls are synonymous in my mind. I personally don't have multiple characters for one doll because I feel the need to assign things their own unique, concrete identity, but I love seeing when other people do it. I have a lot of characters that will never be dolls.

    7. Over-all? Way, way more characters...
I'm an MMO and old-school, paper-and-weird-dice, tabletop RPG player who's been at it for something north of 30 years. I have a lot of characters I'm fond of, dating all the way back to my very first "black box" Traveller scout and D&D Wizard, who were created when I was all of 12 years old.

      BUT...

I have absolutely no intention of having the vast majority of those folks in resin form. There will never be a Landers (the Traveller scout) or Kassandra (the D&D wizard) doll, for instance. I've been very selective about which of my game characters I chose to doll-ify.

That said, of the characters I *did* want to give physical form? They're slightly outnumbered by their resin counterparts, because I do have two different versions of one trio... My favorite City of Heroes MMO characters (Palrah, Grey Kestrel and Red Cardinal-) exist in my collection as both LittleFee kid/chibis and adult EIDs. They're the only ones over here I've done that with.

    8. I have more dolls than characters. Almost all of my dolls have a character now, but most of them didn't until they came home. I buy dolls, then create a personality for them, likes/dislikes, and other basic information. Some don't have a story. Only one or two dolls started off as a character that was then translated into doll form :)

    9. I have A LOT of characters xD what I'm planning is just shelling the key ones and if I ever feel I've hit my limit with dolls then I'll stop. But there's no way I could ever shell every single character.

    10. I have way more characters than I do dolls. I do only plan on getting my favorite most core characters dolls though. Maybe after I get all of the core characters that I want I will expand, and add a few more.

    11. Some of my dolls have pre-existing characters attached and some don't -- 3 are fan dolls, 3 are OCs, 11 don't have pre-existing characters, and I have another OC I really need to get a body for. One thing I discovered is that some characters are great on paper, but for whatever reason just don't work when I put them into doll form.

    12. i have roughly 30 characters (so far) and only four dolls, however i am planning to get a doll for every one of them but my wallet will only allow for so many at a time :)

    13. I generate ideas so fast that I'd never be able to shell them all into doll form. I must have twenty plots in my head right now, and since most plots are of couples, that's like 40 dolls right there. Plus, I buy dolls in the marketplace that I just think are so pretty. I will always have more characters than dolls.

    14. I too have many characters I would love to see in dolly form. Right now though, I only have 2 that I'm planning on getting!

    15. I write fantasy stories, but I don't want to shell any of the characters in those stories. I create new characters to fit the dolls I like. They end up with their own back stories and relationships. I have one of several dolls who are fan characters of some of my favorite anime.

    16. 'm with the more characters than dolls camp, but I also have more than one character "shelled" per doll. I've finally decided that I'll never be able to define my first doll by one character, so he's been affectionately named Whatsisface and goes by other names when he's "in character". A change of eyes, wig, and clothes can really go a long way to making him feel like an entirely different person! He's currently got three selves: a fantasy style character from the world I'm creating, a modern interpretation of the same character, and an unrelated 17th century French ghost who accidentally got made-up when I decided to sew him a halloween outfit and change his eyes to match.

For now, I'm largely contemplating my purchases based on which dolls I like, and then fitting characters to those. I have enough people in my brain from a decade and a half of writing and roleplaying that I'll never be lacking for personalities, and it saves me the hassle of searching forever and ever for that perfect match for one particular character.

    17. One of my bad habit is that when I see dolls I love I tend to make up another character than can be linked to my existing character...
So currently I have more character than dolls as I couldn't buy all of them just yet (but stories already made lol)

    18. Oh yes, I have many, many, MANY more characters than dolls - all the knights of the Round Table, assorted ladies, some wizards and a few sorceresses XD... Now and again I also feel the urge to throw in a character or two from one of my other WIPs, and currently I'm tempted to shell Marvel's Boy Loki. But on the whole, no, I select a few main characters or personal favourites that I shell as dolls. On occasion I also come across dolls that I like and conveniently 'find' a character for (I'm looking at you, Zaoll Luv!), or I reshell a character and 'find' another character for the old shell (that would be you, Doll Leaves Vivian!).

The worst doll-related vice that I have is that, although I select characters to be shelled, some characters I've shelled more than once. I'm a rank amateur compared to VampireAngel13, but I do have three Morganas and three Gawains, and if I didn't hold on to my last scrap of self-control, I could easily find more.

I could really not do the opposite thing - using one doll to be several characters. The sculpts are just SO MUCH their particularl characters; even when I see other people's versions of the same sculpt, they look like my characters in disguise to me :p. What I do, though, is dress my characters in different epoch styles. Like: if Morgana didn't live in the sixth century, what other kinds of styles would fit her? That sort of thing. As such, adult Gawain has a medieval outfit, an early Victorian-looking dress set and a modern suit. In character, just not in the right timeframe. Because... Well, because.

      ;)

    19. I actually am pretty even, I have characters in mind for dolls sometimes ahead of time but often I develop a doll's character once I have her/him.

    20. I have an equal amount of dolls & characters because I rely on the doll to become a character. I don't have pre-set characters but rather a specific universe that they all fit into. As I contemplate a doll, it will reveal it's self & where it fits in. I know this probably sounds weird but it works for me. Sometimes I'll have a doll for a while before I really get to know just who & what it is. In the meantime I try different wigs, eyes & clothes to see if anything inspires me.
