1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Dolls vs Figures

Feb 22, 2017

    1. If I REALLY love a character, I want both, honestly... While most of my dolls sort of take on characters of their own or are based on original characters, I've got one who's there to be my take on a character I have bought or pre-ordered every figure of I could get my hands on. Another I'm planning is a character I've bought two figures of, I just only have his head as I wait to get my hands on the right body for him...

    2. I posted on this thread back in 2017. Dang. 7 years later my opinion is...mostly the same? I've been working on reducing my figure collecting (only have 5 on preorder right now, lol) and my BJD collecting has also pretty much ended for now (haven't bought one in over a year). I'm slowly coming to terms with being able to enjoy a media without buying anything about it. It's hard! I love little guys on my shelf.

That being said, two out of my six dolls are characters from the game Undertale. Frisk has a few small figures available but the other character, Chara, does not have any. I really had fun getting them both put together and having them as dolls. I have gone through a lot of media-based character dolls in the past but Undertale has stuck around as a long term love rather than a passing fixation so I can't see getting rid of either of them any time soon.

    3. I collect both and they have different appeals to me!

Figures have a charm where they can be more dynamic or expressive than dolls. I generally collect figures based on art style and character design versus who the character is. I’m the type that just mainly cares about what I think is cute.

Dolls have the appeal whee they are more lifelike and detailed to me. I pick dolls based on their sculpt since that is their main appeal. Dolls also feel more personal than figures which are more like decorations to me. Not that I think my dolls are alive or whatever, just that customizing and dressing them makes them feel more special.

If I was forced to pick between one or the other, I’d pick dolls, but I’d be sad to let figures go lol.

    5. I've collected figures for over ten years now and only just got my first BJD recently, but when I'm getting a figure, I make my decisions based on both aesthetics and how much I care about the character. I want a figure of a character I know and have already connected with, and I want a sculpt that's eye-catching and lively. But when I was looking into which BJD I wanted to start my collection with, it was entirely different. I was looking for a new "character" to create from scratch. I was imagining what she'd look like in different clothes and with different wigs, and trying to find a sculpt that gave me a lot of ideas. BJDs are more interactive, so when I decided on one, it had to be one that I would look forward to dressing up and posing and taking off the shelf. I don't want my dolls to just sit there as decorations like my figures do.

    6. I don't own figures due to their high price point despite lacking articulation. They're sure pretty and cute, but I like something that can move. I think figures will look great when you first get them but boring later on since you can't move them, repose them, or dress them up like dolls.
