Dolls with buzz cuts?

Aug 1, 2023

    1. I've recently wanted to repaint one of my dolls to be a pre-existing OC, but in all of my infinite wisdsom I decided on a character with a buzz cut.
Is there any way to have this look good on a BJD? What are some methods of making it look good? I've seen a few recommendations, but no tutorials or experiences from anyone. I'd really like to hear what people have done, or see more examples. I've only seen 3-4 examples, and I still can't decide how I'd go about doing it.
I cannot do anything HYPER realistic, but I don't want it to just be solid black....

      Ideas?

    2. Are you planning to paint it, or hoping for a really short wig? I know I've seen painted ones on Instagram, but if you're looking for actual fuzz my recommendation would be to make a hard wig cap and use flocking. There might not be a tutorial for that specifically, but you can definitely find a tutorial for each part.

    3. I'd never be able to find it but I do remember seeing a doll with flocking applied directly on the head. It only looks good if the seam between head and headcap is incredibly flush.

    4. It's not super well done but I flocked one of my dolls head directly. The flocking is just acrylic fiber cut up over and over again to the point that it was shredded. Hair line can be difficult to get looking right but this is fully removable. I've seen others do a much better job at pulling off this look.

    5. If you wanted to go the paint route you could try something like Ringdoll K: K

    6. Some dolls in Granado company pics have painted buzzes (Galileo and Garden) - imo the best looking options I've seen, too. Flocking is probably a good option for a longer buzzcut - I'd use a flocking gun for a good texture though. I guess even then it'd need some extra painting to make it fade nicely.

    7. I have two dolls like this. One painted and one with flocking. If you want to PM me I can show you both :)

    8. I painted a super short buzz cut on one of my dolls. The seam for the faceplate is back behind the ears, so it works nicely. :)

    9. I'm planning on painting it! Everywhere I've found a really short wig I dont like the look of it that much.

      I'll send you a PM! <3

    10. Thank you for this example! <3 How did you get that texture? Was it a special brush? Did you blush first?

    11. I no longer have this girl, as a friend owns her now, but I have some old pics of the flocking I did. It's just super short craft flocking (I think this one was actually meant to be dirt for model trains...) glued directly to her head. Headcaps felt too bulky to me. I painted her head first, then coated it with Aleene's Tacky glue, sprinkled on the flocking, dusting it a bit with a makeup brush to get it even, let it dry, then repeat the flocking part. The seam for the headcap does show a little bit, but I didn't mind that as much as I would have a headcap. (Note: this really only works with dolls with no headplate and flush headcaps.) I did remover her head for dressing so nothing was rubbing against the flocking, though it is pretty strong and normal touching didn't damage it.

    12. She's absolutely gorgeous! However, the hair texture created with that may not work for my guy. I think flocking looks best for curlier hair texturing! Do you think this texturing would look good/work on a 'white' doll?

    13. I did a light blushing first as an outline for where I wanted it, sealed and then I used a tiny paintbrush and toothpick combo to get all the tiny dots. Took a while, but it was worth it!

    14. How did you get the blushing to be so clean?? Do you have a method? Sorry for all the questions! I'm just really interested in this method. :XD:

    15. No worries! :) Blend the powder well with a brush or qtip and then go along the edges with a kneadable eraser. I usually brush that line a bit to soften/blur it. Then seal to keep in place for the paint. It could be done after paint too to elimate a sealing step, just a matter of preference really.

    16. I forgot how much i liked this sculpt!!! I would try it, but this isn't really a buzzcut- it's an undercut. There's a big difference, I think, because an undercut still involves a wig! While a buzzcut, if gone the painted route, will have no wig at all.

    17. So I have done one doll with a “buzz” / bald look. More like maiko with a very close buzz. As mine is based on a buddhist monk I instead went with a blue gray coloration. It worked so well I never put a wig on my doll, which I thought I would. I say if you not flocking do a patchy look going gray for black or pale brown for burnets. I just referenced real people while painting.
I used an airbrush. It is very easy to go to opaque btw so go slow. I think multiple layers with thinned paint and a watercolor brush would provide the same effect. Plus some pastels to blend your edges.
      Best of luck!
