Dolls with extreme facial expressions.

May 2, 2014

    1. No. But then I don't want one laughing hysterically or screaming either. Good question.

    2. No. Mona's face makes me cringe every time I see it. Yes, she is interesting, but having her face stuck in a crying expression makes me a little unnerved when I look at her.

    3. Yes I would, though I would prefer a more mature looking sculpt to Mona. In general I'm tired of seeing so many "pretty" dolls.

    4. Yes. As you had said, it is a piece of art. It would be amazing to have a doll with such unique expression, but it's right to say that you would't treat that doll as a "casual" one. It would be reserved for "special moments". I mean, would you play with her as if she were a normal doll? It could even sometimes make you shudder. But this doll is really gorgeus. But, of course, I would have to make shure that I'm spending the money properly before buying it. But I also think that, after a time, she would become boring. If you really like Mona, think about on buying her again. Good luck with your decision! ;)

    5. I would, But I want a different look than Mona. Still waiting. haha

    6. I would not because even I see a SP head I will feel sleepy, I am afraid I will be sad with Mona if I have her in my collection

    7. I don't think so. I had originally planned for my first boy to have a crying faceup (not sculpt, just permanent tears), but once he arrived, I couldn't do it. I like to do photoshoots with my dolls, and roleplay them and take pix for rp, and a crying sculpt would just limit me too much.

    8. I don't think I could do full out crying because that might make me sad. I could probably do a just before crying pout. Especially if it is in a Yo-SD size. Then it would trigger "awe adorable" instead of "oh, sad"

    9. I think in the right context the crying dolls could work. but maybe on more kid style dolls.
Yes Mona is supposed to be young, but I mean the kid/baby dolls. the ones that look like toddlers as MegWesley has stated.

What surprised me is Mona doesn't have a secondary face option. I've noticed a lot of the extreme emotion/sculpt dolls will have a second "normal" face.
As a few have stated the always crying would be very limited, and in Mona's case because its that extreme "ugly" cry it's even more limiting.

she's still an amazing sculpt and a lot of time and effort went into her. She'll definitely be one of those you either love her or hate kind of things.
I do applaud Ringdoll though for taking a chance with such and extreme sculpt!

    10. I think there is already a similar thread because I've said this before, YES, I would buy a crying, laughing, just about any emotion-expressing doll--and I have bought them. Mona is one among my more emotive sculpts and she is amazing. Those life-like furrows and lines in her face catch the light and shadows and make photographing her a joy. She can look sad or she can look frightened or she can look about to sneeze, she is really more versatile than some might think. I am actually beginning to find that my dolls with the imaginative sculpts are more versatile than those that have that blank thousand-yard stare.

    11. Nope not my style of Bjd. I'm not fond of extreme expressions so a little smile or pout is fine for me. I'm not sure I would ever want a doll that looks so upset and sad...

    12. I adore facial expression sculpts of all kinds!

I more then likely somewhere on the autism spectrum and have always had to study people's faces extra hard to understand what they were thinking.

So when someone says something like "this is a sad sculpt or a sleepy, or a happy one" I am fascinated! I took one look at Ring-doll Mona and loved the face although I assumed she was just grumpy or pouting because she did not get her own way.

I bought my first doll solely based off his face-up, it was a doll leaves Ethan and his default was a red face. I saw it and thought hahaha, he looks like he's been running around and exercising. Everyone else said he was sad.

      Dolls with expressions I like:

      Doll Love Summer
      DollZone Carter
      DIM- MIso
      Angel of dream -Hui Xian
      notdoll Bleu Citron

    13. Extreme sadness just... isn't for me. I like some sculpts that look a little wistful or pouty, but for my own collection I'd prefer a neutral expression with the capability to look sad with the right angle or faceup. I just don't want my dolls to cry! I'd feel too bad for them! One that could just as easily be shy or thoughtful would be more my speed-- I used to have a 'resting sad face' when I was younger, so a little melancholy look doesn't put me off, because my doll could just be enjoying a daydream and not aware of how sad they look to others, but crying like Mona would just make me sad. I do think it's great that she speaks to so many people and that the artist's hard work has an audience, though.

Extreme smiles are hit and miss for me. Sometimes I think they're the cutest thing in the world and other times they're a little scary... But I am much likelier to want a doll that's always happy. I deal with depression and one of my motivations for collecting was to have a little cheerful face around to keep me reminded of the fun things in life (not easy always, nor a perfect method, but it does sometimes help).

    14. I may want to see them but I won't order them. It's because a head with extreme facial expression will be difficult to deal with later (photographing, posting, etc... Somehow it will look strange in my opinion.)

    15. I generally like dolls with extreme expressions, I'm actually planning on getting Angel of Dream Hui Xiang :) I also find Ring Doll Mona to be very fascinating and beautiful. Of course extreme expression limits the way the doll can be photographed a bit, but it doesn't bother me that much. I think strong expression makes an interesting trait on a doll.

    16. I react too strongly to expressions, and worry that an extreme facial expression would affect my mood. So, nope, I don't want one!

    17. I don't mind when the expression is enthusiastic. My favorite doll with an extreme expression is the Impldoll BABY Ives. That big smile looks adorable!
But I don't ever want a doll that is sad or weeping. They are beautifully done sculpts; but to me it looks kinda depressing and it puts me in a bad mood.

    18. I actually like dolls with extreme expressions almost as much as I like the standard ones, and I think Mona is incredibly well done and captures the sad look perfectly ... but I could never own her. Overly sad dolls and ... overly sad looking ANYTHING really(Complete with tears and all) just disturbs me for some reason. I don't like having anything of the sort in the house. Too depressing for my tastes, I guess.
And like another commenter said, I react pretty strongly to facial expressions, and having a doll with a face in a permanent state of crying would probably make me feel bad(don't want my resin babies to be sad, after all). I wonder if Ringdoll will ever release a different Mona head where she isn't crying her eyes out. I'll bet she'd be really, really cute with a little smile on her face. :aheartbea

    19. I also came across Ringdoll Mona a couple days ago, love how realistic her expression is <3

    20. I do like dolls with unusual facial expressions, especially smiling or grinning ones. As for Mona, I agree that the emotions on her face are masterfully conveyed, but I would never buy her because it's really difficult to come up with new ideas of photographing the crying doll.
