Dolls with extreme facial expressions.

May 2, 2014

    1. I love extreme expressions on dolls, lopsided smiles, an eye more closed than the other, huge grins, open mouths... I love how amazing Mona is but have no place for her in my doll family as I prefer happy sculpts in general. As an example, I'm currently waiting on Foolbot's Mr Kitty, who comes with three faces two of which are pretty 'extreme' in their expression, one being a foxy, sly smile with the eyes closed and the other a huge toothy grin with the mouth open XD; that last faceplate was exactly what sold me on him in the first place, it's just irresistible!

    2. Well, I think the expressions are very dynamic - so when you do take photos, for example, the expression makes it all the most beautiful -- that said, I don't think you can get as much use out of them. . as the mood is set, the expression is set - it's not like you can move the head to try to convey another emotion, so I just don't find them very practical. But, that said -- if it's a specific look you're going for, you're going to get a lot more mileage out of a doll with an extreme expression, absolutely.

    3. It really depends on the sculpt. I tend to be more attracted to dolls that have a neutral face or happy. Same goes with extreme expressions, I do like the ones that are extremely happy or smirking or anything along the lines of that. Mona is just not my cup of it. Though I do appreciate how beautiful and fascinating she does look.

    4. I tend to prefer dolls with a slight expression- furrowed brows, a hint of a smirk- but the very extreme sculpts are so impressive, I cant help but admire them!

    5. I like dolls with just slight expression....not to where it looks too blank though.

    6. Overall, I tend to prefer a neutral expression for my dolls--the kind of thing that can take on happy, sad, pensive, or any number of other expressions depending on pose and angle. That said, I do have a FL LittleFee Reni, who is an extremely smiley little thing, and I love her! The character I bought her for tends to be fairly happy in general, so the smile on that sculpt suits her well. It's not quite the extreme joy of a Pong, but it's still a really endearing expression.

I've always loved the idea of multiple faceplates for multiple expressions, though. (Unoa, I think, did this? And I know there's a few others out there.) Honestly, I wish more companies did a system like that; I've got sleeping heads/faceplates where they've been an option, and if I could get smiling/frowning/surprised/etc looks for some of the dolls, I think it'd open up a broader range of poses and photo options, and just generally be fun to have!

    7. I know this thread is pretty old, but I've just stumbled upon it now and it is so awesome!

I loved seeing everyone's examples, I didn't know there were so many dolls with such crazy expressions. I really like them, but I do agree that it's nice to have a neutral option as well.

      That Toadstool though :nowords:

    8. The work that went behind Mona is amazing, they got the expression so realistically perfect. But I wouldn't want her myself, I think I prefer having dolls that have more neutral/somewhat happy expressions. That being said, one of my favorite dolls is this person's Dollits Miso. It's just too bad that she's sold out.

    9. I do like dolls with extreme facial expressions BUT also dolls with extreme facial features (such as funny shaped heads, tiny/huge eyes or mouths and things like that). \(>w<)/

    10. It depends on what I want for the character, but in general I think the more expressive faces are really cool! I imagine it would be a little more limiting to customize them but I'm sure if someone buys that sculpt the expression is what they're looking for, it is in my case. I have an I.O.S. CHAOS on order specifically for the unsettling leer (which seems to default to malicious but could probably be altered into a sweet broad smile, especially if the artist opened the eyes some.)

Ringdoll Norman Dark 2.0 has an awesome grin, and although it's not that extreme, I.O.S. Bel Canto's half smile is appealing. I.O.S. has an 80cm vampire head called Infernale with a Gene Simmons-esque long pointy tongue flopped out (he actually has interchangeable tongues so you can position it differently, one is straight and one is curled upward...) and while he's a cool looking sculpt, I'd definitely want a more neutral face to go along with that particular one, I think I'd get tired of looking at it all the time, especially with a doll that large. It depends some on the nature of the expression.

    11. I love dolls with more than neutral expressions. Sometimes it looks as if neutral faces can carry more emotions, but I don't think this is true. A doll with a smile on their face could look shy, angry, smirky, evil, strong, sad, etc. And a doll with a frown is also capable of the same things.

My Elfdoll K-ss is actually one of the most expressive dolls I own, 'despite' his frown.

    12. I've always wanted a doll with a ridiculous expression, to be honest. It's so hard to find a BJD I like with even a subtle smile, though (ugh ESPECIALLY elven dolls. they're all so sad ): ). Still, I would go wild if I found a doll I like with a big toothy grin or an angry snarl or something JUST ridiculous enough.

    13. I love dolls with extreme expressions, with the exception of a doll with a huge grin and pointed teeth that I repressed the company of so I can never find it again. The Iplehouse vampire dolls were AMAZING. I love the wide smile dolls! Supia dolls have very interesting expressions, not just neutral expressions, and I love all of them. I follow Ringdoll on Instagram and the first time they posted Mona I felt so bad for her! I don't think I could own her because she's so sad I'd always be trying to cheer her up!

I'm actually getting a doll with an unusual expression!

I have her on layaway. She's blank, though, and I'm glad because I don't care for the Luts face up!

    14. I admire the effort that goes into making sculpts like these but I would never personally buy them, just because I wouldn't want a doll that just has a constant mood if that makes sense. I don't want a bjd that is always looking sad, or always looks angry. It just wouldn't work for me, specially since my bjd are my major destress system so seeing a doll always wearing an expression that I might not be in the mood for would just annoy me.

    15. I absolutely love smiling dolls. On the other hand, I would not want a sad looking face sculpt. One of my dream dolls is Angell Studio's QuingXue, who has a definite slight smirk/smile. [IMG]

    16. If it's a slight smile then I'm ok with it. If it's a real grin I want a face-plate or another head to be able to change expressions.

    17. I like looking at dolls with extreme facial expressions, but I don't think I would ever want to own one.

    18. I love Ringdoll Mona. I very much want one in the family. :) If I were inclined, I would make Mona a "Moaning Myrtle" cosplay and get her a little toilet to hang out on, to cheer me up.

I also want a Doll Chateau Irma and a DZ Carter. ^-^ And a Granado Hansel--love that cocky, lop-sided smirk of his.

I like strongly angry or frowning or creepy-grin dolls. Cheerful dolls are not interesting to me--for example,I genuinely do not understand what the universal appeal of FL Pong is. o_O I also get a little bored with all the neutral/softly smiling/ softly pouting dolls out there.

But, plenty of variety for everyone! ^3^ I'm glad that there are some options out there for people who like the more extreme expressions.

    19. I don't like the ones who look sad or angry. I like them to look happy or have a neutral expression.
