Dollstown 13yr & 15yr Discussion - part three

Sep 9, 2013

    1. I think smaller 1/3 girls (by that I mean 57-62cm in height) are still reasonably popular, 16year girl is a bit taller than them but I think she is the same height as the old 15year girl? Their dimensions are somewhat similar.

Unfortunately, the small 1/3 boy size (58-62cm) is very unpopular nowadays, the space is hollowing out a lot. I too have been keeping an eye out for shorter 1/3 boys (I prefer 62-65cm height), and most companies just don't focus on that size anymore, all that exists are older bodies that have been made before. That's just the trend now. On the other hand, there are more tall 1/4 dolls coming out, they tend to be mature-bodied and around 45-51cm in height. So tall 1/4s might start filling up the small 1/3 gap.

I'm personally keen to know more about the 16year boy body, if he gets released. I hope he's around 64-66cm in height -- I may have a floating head to put on it...

    2. Based on the measurements for the 16year girl, she will probably fit Volks SD16 sized clothing. The 15yr girl body was a lot thicker. I wish he still had reference measurements up for the 15. It would just make it easier to figure out how the newer girls compare.

    3. I might have the 15 year girl body measurements on file. Will go check.

    4. Thanks! It would be awesome if you could add them to her wiki entry!

    5. Turns out that is one measurement I am missing. I have email An to ask if they can recall that info. I will let you all know if I get a good reply or a reply of no recall. I have all the measurements in my book, but didn't print that info until 10 years ago, the 15 girl was stopped in 2011.

    6. I mean, I own one too. I could just not be lazy.

    8. [IMG]Introducing Izzy by Ali MacTavish-Riach, on Flickr

I hope this is the correct Dollstown thread, I'm going by the fact @aihre has posted pictures of their Rhea hybrid in here too.

This is Izzy, she's a Rhea head (purchased on the mp) on a Doll Family-H 58cm body. I've wanted a DT doll since I first joined the BJD community over 16 years ago, loved their expressive faces but thought they were kind of out of my league at that time. A couple of years ago however I was watching one of the adaptations of "Great Expectations" couldn't believe how much the actress playing young Estella looked like a DT doll. That resparked my interest, I found a Rhea head here in the marketplace and here we are.

I'm still deciding on her final look so eyes and wig may well change but I was itching to get some photos taken now that after several failed attempts I finally managed to give her a faceup I was relatively happy with. I hope you like her.

    9. She's stunning. Congrats on getting her.

    10. @Blodeuwedd oh my, your girl is so beautiful. I can't stop staring at her, and I think your faceup has brought out the best of the Rhea sculpt - I feel that I never really managed that with my Rhea. I don't have my girl anymore but I'll always have a soft spot for this face. She seems to be a rather obscure DT sculpt, so I'm SO glad to see another one done this beautifully. Thank you for sharing her!

Old pic of my Rhea (on Ariadoll 14year girl). Glad that she's found a home now with another Dollstown lover through the MP.

    11. @aihre thank you for saying that it means a great deal. Knowing how well loved DT sculpts are, how long they've been around and how strong their following is I worried about not doing justice to her.
I loved your girl, kept admiring photos you posted of her. She was so pretty! Wish I'd seen that FS, I'd have snapped her up too.

    12. @Blodeuwedd she's amazing! I love how moody she is

    13. @lutke thank you, I’ve noticed it seems to be a recurring theme with a lot of my dolls :XD:

    14. We took Izzy on a wee road trip with us one day last month when it was snowy and misty....unfortunately by the time we got to one of the planned spots the mist had shifted so it wasn't quite as gloomy as I'd hoped so she only got taken out once and decided half way through taking photos that she'd had enough, fell over face first into the snow and refused to have her wig on after that!

I also got her new eyes, they make her stare even more intense but are a pain to position as her eyewells and eye openings are uneven, still it's part of her charm!

    15. So sorry about the weather and her attitude, you work so hard to make your dolls happy, but we can't control everything. Hugs and hope for better photo days ahead.

    16. My 3 are back from face ups and my Hana who is mom to the little ones is happy as is dad. Shigure to have them back home.

My goal is to make a couch big enough so they can all sit together.

    17. Great to see 13yr and 15yr Dollstowns getting some love!

@Blodeuwedd I just adore Izzy. She looks wonderful with pale eyes, but I agree about the unevenly bevelled eyewells. I had some trouble positioning the eyes in my Rhea when I had her, but it so happened those were hand-blown glass eyes which were themselves asymmetric. So I managed to get a well-aligned gaze ... two wrongs making a right, for once

      .
Lately I've been doing a lot of posing with my doll crew. Here's Syr and Justinian on the old, discontinued, single-jointed 15year bodies. Both are sueded, and wired with 12gauge/2mm steel. That trifecta of single jointed knees, solid heavy legs, and fat ankles allows them to free-stand in bended knee poses, something that none of my double-jointed dolls can do.

These two are such a delight to pose. They do everything I want them to do, and they don't fuss like my double-jointed gang. The steel wire is doing a lot of heavy lifting, but they are very versatile with it and look natural without fail. At one stage I considered "upgrading" them to double-jointed bodies... but nah, I think it'd end up being a downgrade that I'll regret. They'll stay forever single-jointed but I honestly don't think it's much of a disadvantage. I haven't handled any other Dollstown bodies besides these, but I really think this pair of 15year bodies are Jonghak's masterpieces in the single jointed range.

Justinian is Dollstown Mui (original ver) on the discontinued, single-jointed/3-part torso 15year boy.
Syr is Crobidoll Lance on 15year girl.

    18. @animemom gosh, I’m so sorry I never said thanks to you when I first posted a pic of Izzy…don’t know how I missed it other than the fact that usually when I check the forum it’s very late at night and I’m even more scatterbrained than usual.
As frustrating as it was that day had Izzy not thrown a strop forcing us to move on there’s a lot of beautiful moments we would have missed such as the low winter sun finally breaking through, backlighting snow and frost covered trees making everything sparkle or being at a particular spot as the sun was going down and a quirk of the light resulting in a patch of mist appearing to have a turquoise hue to it. So she actually did us a favour really.
I just love your DT family, saw their profiles before I saw this picture. The little ones are so adorable! These are the sort of photos that make people want dolls they didn’t realise they needed.

lol thanks @aihre, the dark eyes were at least a bit more forgiving as you couldn’t see the pupil so you could get away with it, these ones not so much. I’ll keep tweaking the position and hopefully get there in the end.
Loving these photos and you’re right, the poses are very natural looking. I can imagine it took a while to set them up though.

    19. These photos are amazing. I will have to do this to Kisa since she is my travel doll if I ever travel again. Thank you for the info on the wiring gauge.

    20. @Blodeuwedd I remember that Rhea has one eyewell that's not smoothly bevelled vs the other eyewell, so that eye opening looks a bit smaller than the other. It gave my girl a bit of a squinty look, but I think it adds to her character!
Thank you. It didn't take very long to get Syr and Justinian into those poses. I play a lot with my crew, these two are my oldest dolls, so I've handled them the most and am quite familiar with them. The wiring makes them not floppy anymore (quite the opposite), so when I pose these two and find their balance points, they stay put and hold quite reliably.

@animemom You're welcome. The 12gauge galvanized steel wire that I use is tough enough to be load-bearing -- the wire is now doing the poses instead of elastic tension and joints. Syr and Justinian are no longer cuddly, and require some force to push them into a pose. I used wire this tough so they can squat/bend knees like above and have a quasi-double-jointed range to their arms; I've tried thinner wire and it doesn't work as well. This kind of wiring isn't for everyone though, if you think it's too tough to handle or want the dolls to be more cuddly, 1.6mm/14gauge steel will stabilize their limbs even if it's not load-bearing enough.
I saw that Kisa is on the Elf body - 14gauge may be tough enough for her since she's smaller than the 15year bodies.
