1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Dollzone Originality - Discuss it here.

Jul 2, 2006

    1. I'm asking them to not be so offensive in how they post things. Is that so wrong? I'm not saying they shouldn't post their opinion and allow for a discussion on it, but to do so where it's constructive vs a witchhunt. How would you feel if every time there was a post about Delf it was accusing them of copying. There are ways to have discussions without jumping to 'they are copying'.

      -Anneke

    2. Like the rest have said... now if it were CP Lishe's pinky o' doom, I might wonder... why they would do such frustrating hand pose.

    3. You know, there are a lot of OTHER companies out there whose dolls look a lot more suspicious to me. Head sculpts where we've sat around in private and said "oo look, there's an El! That one looks like a Lishe!" There's even one that I swear they took a DZ 70 cm boy's head and altered his mouth just the teeniest, tiniest bit.

But you know what? I don't have any way to know whether they copied anything or not. And neither do you, if you're honest about it.

      Show me the tool marks.

Until then, my gosh, people, find something else to angst over and let DZ get on with their business.

This, let me hasten to add, is MY OWN OPINION.

    4. It bears repeating: There are only so many ways the human hand can pose.

There are only so many ways the human hand can pose.

Just like there are only so many ways to sculpt a human body.

If you're going for realism, you have to stay real.

Meaning there are only so many ways the human hand can pose.

The company doing the "copying" is irrelevant. This shouldn't even be a concern.

    5. you don't mean to make DZ seem like a copycat, yet you use the word "copy" quite a bit. you probably didn't mean it to be taken so harshly. but again, there already was a huge debate thread for this and DZ originality has been hashed and re-hashed all over the place. and using the same gesture? although some people may not like it, there's no "creative copyright" or whatever on the gestures. DZ probably just wanted to market in a way they think will bring the most customers.

you're always going to find similarities of any sort between such a large variety of dolls. the human body, and all it's respective shapes, can only be stretched so far. so unless you feel you've been personally ripped off by DZ using similar hand shapes, you probably shouldn't worry too much about it.

    6. Again, I'm really sorry keep saying the words "copy" and "the same". Yet, I do not want to edit my post too much because of people ask me to. Instead, I stand out here and reply. But I am sure I will take the advice that I shouldn't titled the thread so offensive and I will not to it again.

This may sounds really odd, but I'm happy to see people supporting DZ. I'm not a DZ hater. I hv been plainning to get Fenyo and Megi as twins.
Beside witch hunting, what I really want is DZ can be unique enough to stop nonsense picky people like me from saying anything about the originality. I am happy to see DZ's new boys and I can't say any thing about the head sculpts.
I know this is a diffcult task, but I hope they can to it.
(I know there are copies of DZ and other china dolls. The companies are making certificates now to prevent fake dolls. I dont know I should be happy or sad about this)

And, well, I know there are not many people weird like me loving hands more than fashions... *sweat*

I only think it will be more fun if there are more hands postures. The prices of hands are not so badly to play around with. I'm not a doll maker and I don't know how hard to creat a pair of hands. So, I'm gonna stop asking for newly invented hands but I hope there will be some.

I have my dolls, I love my kids and happy with them. But honestly, I don't find how "useful" a doll is to a doll collector. I think dolls are money suckers.

Yes, I think this is enough for this thread since I see many DZ supporters and I am too picky on hands.

    7. I would also advise you change the thread title so it doesn't say the word copy. This word mentioned immediately makes people feel offended, so are less likely to read what you have to say.

Hand positions get copied all the time, I don't think it's just DZ doing this! Personally I'm fine with it. If one company thinks another company's hands look cute I can see why they would sculpt a similar pose. It's not recasting directly, so I think it's ok.

(A quick note to anyone offended by the thread, please don't be! No one is insulting you or the dolls directly here, it's just speculation on the similar hand poses. No one means harm that I can tell. Save your indignation for when someone really insults the dolls you like, and it'll be taken more seriously. That's a rule I use myself)

    8. If all 3 are simaler, then couldn't you say DOD is copying Luts, or Luts is Copying DOD?

If someone copys things (which I have now seen pics of Woorie and Lynn, I apologize for the past ver of this. I think DZ HAS copyed that, but HASN'T copyed anything else resently (in the last 6 months+) then it is THAT BRAND who does so, and it is really ONLY the brand they copyed business. I do think we all have a right to discuss it, just not say 'don't buy from them, they copyed' or 'they should close down' EXT.
But serously, can't we just drop the DZ debats? :/

Also, couldn't you say EVERY brand but VOLKS is copying? It was VOLKS that first came out with the 1/6 Dollfie, later they made the BJD Super Dollfie. And THEN came out the next types, and such on.

And if the hands are 'the same' because of the pinky, take a look at the American Girl doll hands (non BJD) their pinkies are also out some.

If some one wants a DZ body/head, GOOD FOR THEM.(EDIT, No, I'm not saying 'go them' just....sacrcasm >_<''') Grade the DOLL and NOT the people who MADE it. I mean, lets say...LUTS, the people who made LISHE, (nothing against Lishes! Lots of people like them, which is why I'm using them as an example) or HOUND, (I'm being VERY hypolthectical here, I'm sure they don't do this) started going out and dissing EVERY brand of doll other then theirs, and pointing out EVERY flaw, would that make you say 'Lishes/Hounds arn't good dolls." or if they copyed something (again, they wouldn't) would you say 'Oh, Don't get a Lishe/Hound, Luts did this!' O_o

(I edited this one about completly, Cause I was very newb-ish when I made it and was new to debating/DZ >_<)

    9. I LOVE DOLLZONE.

I previously owned a Xi, and he was the most wonderful male doll ever.

So here's my opinion on this issue, and then I'll leave the thread to the real debaters XD

I couldn't care less if Dollzone is coying now (though I'm sure their not). I don't care that they copied in the past. I will pimp DZ out to any of my friends. I DON'T CARE!
I'm not going out and purposefully buying their copies, I'm buying their originals. That's why I don't care about their past, or what controversy they may find themselves in the future.

    10. I think, IMHO, that Dollzone dolls have proved so popular that whether or not they once copied other company's dolls, people like them and buy them. Obviously a lot of buyers don't give a damn about any copying issues. I think it is an issue between the companies involved.
They are also very good quality which is more than can be said for some, much more expensive dolls. Even if the head sculpts are not to everyones taste the bodies are great for those hanging -around spare heads that we all have.
I think here will always be DZ haters - cest la vie

    11. :barf Maybe DZ has gotten so popular lately that Volks' die hard fans ( who hate DZ from the bottom of their gut ) are abit miffed about that?
There are a lot more DZ dolls coming onto DoA lately.

I hate Butter Beans. Just saying that out loud makes me gag... but I don't go around spreading Anti BB propaganda. :XD: If I happen to see someone with BB on their plate, I wouldn't go out of my way to put them down for liking them.
I see that a lot on other forums... "Ewwww... it's a _______ doll? Don't you know what they DID?" :doh

    12. What about die-hard DZ fans who 'hate' Volks from the bottom of their gut?
Does the same apply to them?

(Hate is a word too strong for dolls IMO)

Dollzone have a very direct selling technique. How many of us have recieved an unwanted e-mail asking to be a dealer??? I got one out of the blue.

So they sell alot of dolls.

Volks dolls are harder to obtain. They are costlier and less are made.

I think, given Volks and Dollzone's completely different selling tactics, it's hard to compare the number of dolls sold.

You could buy two or maybe three Dollzone minis for the price of one MSD. It's quite different.

You can say this is good for the doll market, having two distinct price bands.

(I also believe this is why Volks have not take further legal action: there markets don't cross as much as they could do.)

    13. It does. I guess the word hate is abit strong...

    14. Can we please have the discussion focus BACK on the original post's intent? We have heard enough of this whole Dollzone owners vs. Volks owners subject on the forum and it's really tiring to read. Please refocus back on the original subject if you wish this thread to remain open.

    15. *woosh* My head is spinning.

Nikita I will try to keep this as relevant to the first post as possible but to be honest I no longer know what the original intent of this thread was.

I ordered a DZ megi just over this past weekend. I am very knew to BJDs ( 3 months to be exact) and I've only seen a handful of bjds in real life (excluding my OD so)so I can't speak to much on quality and originality from first hand experience. But I can say that what drew me to Megi was his uniqueness. His eyes had a lot of personality in them, and his lips were impossibly adorable. I also like Volks dolls, When I first found out about BJDS I was dead set in saving for a Kun. At the first doll meet I went to (only doll meet) I saw two DZ boy minis in person, I LOVED them!

I had no idea about the copying issues that were involved with dollzone, I looked over the comparison shots in this thread, and read and droned over all of the arguments, and I agree. They definitely have copied a doll in the past, and I understand completely why that is wrong. It actually really hurt me, I felt like these past two days of pure excitement of obtaining my first msd was in vain. I was looking forward to sharing him with the community here, whom I've come to love. Now I am a bit nervous. And I also feeling guilty of supporting a company that has copied in the past, I have no say in the recent accusations though. Would I have changed my mind about my boy if I had known? I might have. But to me Megi isn't like any other BJD I've come across. If I was considering one of the dolls that are copies, yes I definitely would not have purchased him.

Even though this thread was ALOT to take in, I feel better that I am informed. I hope nothing I said offended anyone in anyway, that was not at all my intention, I was just saying my piece on Dollzone originality.

Jessica ( I realized this is all over the place, forgive that, it's 1 am and I worked 8 hours today :))

    16. Nikita It's going to be hard for people to be objective on the subject because this topic has been locked many times before and will be locked once more because of the same reason.

Most people are objective but there's people who also feel it's their duty to bash Dollzone every chance they get. As well to keep this as objective as possible, people who will bash Volks just because some people just prefer to have Volks. I for one wish this thread had remained closed because it will turn ugly yet again.

That being say and returning to topic, There are just some many ways a body can be made, two arms two legs and Volks themselves based their dolls on a type of Europeean Porcelaine doll, they just did it in a new material. After a while all dolls body look alike, all joints can only be made in such and such ways. For Dollzone, the head molds are different! I can't see any ressemblance there their headmold are unique!

fp1989 You should never let other people dictate you what you like! If you fell in love with your doll isn't that what counts the most? There's always going to be people who are goingto dislike your doll, that's just human nature. You should not feel bad about your choice if the choice was made out of love for the mold.

I myself have a DZ head a Recall. It's not mounted ona DZ body because I disliked the proportions of the head versus the body (This head is smaller then their 70 cm counterparts) the 60 cm body wasn't availlable then and I went the AOD way and the proportions of the body are just perfect for me.

It's a hobby that helps you create your own visions of things, why do people want to keep themselves committed to brands I'll never know. You like Dollzone got for it, you like Volks better? Hey it's your choice! But don't be judge, jury and executionner of other people's choices. Different people different tastes, my mother always told me if you dislike something, don't disgust another person about it because they can have a different pointof view from you and it's just as valid as your own.

Just love your doll and think of what you want it to be... the rest, the doll companies are big enough to take the legal actions they want. If they haven;t, then maybe we should respect that choice. And people should respect what other people buy.

    17. It's comments like that that make it difficult for people to carry on the conversation in an objective way.

And quite frankly, the topic is about "originality," rather than who likes which company. As an aside, popularity does not equal originality, so I don't even see the point that you're trying to make.

acexkeikai, it's kidna weird to hear BJD compared to jointed porcelain dolls sometimes in the argument that there's only so many ways to make a body. ;) I have two of these at my house at the moment... and they're really an entirely different animal than BJD. I should take pics sometime for this kind of thread!

FP1989, it's great that you're informed about your doll. The thoughts that you bring up and your way of dealing with it is really admirable... but please don't let self-consciousness keep you from participating in the community! People who don't like DZ won't bother you, they just won't respond to your posts. Same as people who don't like Volks will avoid threads about Volks, and people who don't like Dollmore will avoid threads about Dollmore. :) There isn't a single company on DoA that EVERYONE loves.

At this point, I think the real benefit of this thread isn't so much continued discussion - it's more so people can be informed before they buy.

    18. I couldn't agree more. Whatever anyone's feelings about Dollzone may be, there's a definite pattern that's emerged here over the past year or so:

      • Dollzone is discussed, things get overly heated on both sides and eventually calls to lock the thread are heeded.
      • The locked thread sinks to the bottom of the forum out of sight of newer members to the hobby.
      • For whatever reasons, the thread/discussion in general is revived and these newer members get a nasty shock. Whether they still love and are proud of their DZ dolls or not (and I'd hope they are: whatever anyone's feelings on any of the dolls allowed on DoA may be, I would hope that we'd all want all members to be pleased with their boys and girls and not ashamed to show them off here) this isn't what they were expecting with their new dolls at all, and they've just been lumped with a piece of the hobby's history that they neither knew about nor asked for.
As a resource threads like this are invaluable to the community, just for the sake of keeping newcomers abreast of the situation that's arisen with Dollzone and with how some parts of DoA may feel. Discovering this suddenly only after they've bought a DZ doll must feel like an awful faux pas to some people, and I'd much rather members were able to take in all this information beforehand and then knowingly go into a purchase having looked at the information that's available and being able to make an informed choice for themselves.

    19. My thought is that yes, DZ copied in the past. Did that stop me from buying Shoyo or wanting Megi and Mo, not at all. Everyone makes mistakes. I highly doubt that someone in here never ever ever cheated on a test, not even for one answer, before in their life. So should everyone be judged harshly due to this?

Dollzone copied for Lynn's face. I'm not sure what they've done concerning bodies and copying, but I've found DZ bodies to be pretty different from other bodies in many ways just looking at them.

I think perhaps being cautious of DZ is a good idea. Just sort of watching to see that you aren't buying anymore direct copies. Though, quite personally, I think that DZ learned from the mistake that they made in the past and are reforming themselves quite a bit.

And, as previously stated, there's only so many ways to portray the human body. I like writing as a hobby. People like to read new things. But so many book plots are similar. Does this mean authors copied other stories? No, not necessairly. But it means that there's only so many plot lines. Coming up with something entirely new and never seen before is hard. The same applies for dolls. They're all portraying the human body and coming up with something effective and entirely new is difficult to do, after all, it's very limiting as to what can be made. It makes sense that to some extent similarities would arrive between companies.

    20. agreed with Xi-Feng, why not make another thread or make a sticky on incoming dolls or somthing about Dollzone originality. Post up there the 'comparison' pictures. The details of what went on and two sides of the argument and of course locked.

I get depressed when this thread crops up again. I wanted to see what was posted but istead of originality we're always talking of DZ vs. Volks.

I never get in any good book cos i like both and want to own dolls from both... well time will tell
