Domuya Flexi vs ShinyDoll Thassa bodies

Dec 31, 2006

    1. I want one eventually... I've always admired this doll from afar but never ordered one... I might be tempted... but I have a few more dolls to get before I get her. I wish you luck with your store and I hope I'll be able to order from you!

    2. I know this is an obscure question, but does anyone know if I can put a Notdoll head on a Shinydoll body?

    3. I'm afraid I don't know the answer to this, but I do know that Shin-san told me once that he would work with any head to get it to mate properly with his Thaasa body. It might mean nodding the neck or the head, but he says he loves the challenge.

I've sent him my white Juri2006 (with the Type 2 neck connection) to see what he can come up with, because I so want to pair that head with his ivory body and get the same degree of flexibility I get with his sculpts.

    4. Hi Lesrees - I own Victor and I like him but I do not care for the piecec that attach to the back of his calfs. They never stay on. (Hey - Does anyone know what I should put on the back of his parts so I can make them stay in? I thought about putting tiny magnets on both parts so they stick together. Any other ideas. I want it to look clean. Does anyone know where I can get tiny magnets?) Other then that this is the only doll I own with the Flexi body. The thing I liked most about Victor was his outfit. LOL I got him at the 2006 BJD convention in Texas.

    5. Just piping in with my love for the Thaasa body...it is indeed as great as everyone here has said. I had a BW Nanae, could never bond with her so sold the head...now I am awaiting a Volks oldskin BW Syo head. I guess it's too late to ask about resin matches since the head is on its way and it's a done deal, but does anyone know if the Thaasa BW is reasonably close to Volks older BW? I'm not really picky, but it'd be nice if they were close. :)

    6. In a perfect (BJD) world, the Luts body would have Thaasa posing. It'd be the perfect mix of esthetics and engineering.

I have nothing but good things to say about Thaasa's engineering... but I've had a couple of these bodies, and I found them to be just a bit too small overall compared to standard BJD clothing and head sizes.

My Akali and Nanae were slim little teenagers in oversized layered clothes so their slenderness was perfect for them. You'll want a character who can be "lost" in her clothing...!

I haven't had a Domuya body... at least not in SD size. I had a Domuya Bobo and I found him way too complicated... You could pose him in any way, but if he *happened* to have clothes on (haha) it was maddening to try and figure out how to get the ball-joints to turn the right way, or to get the elastic in the right groove/slot >_< Just a bit too much of a good thing, though I adored Bobo anyhow!

I've heard the Domuya bodies are "giant", and I know the Thaasa bodies are "tiny" . I suppose if I wanted a super-poseable body, I'd have to start with the head size and color (if I didn't want a Thaasa or Domuya head to make the choice obvious), and go from there.

I hope that was of some help! ^_^

    7. I will wait patiently for you to report on the results, as I'm looking for a body for my Weros. :)

Do you think it would be possible to sand down the breasts on the Thaasa body? I'm looking for a hermaphrodite doll, and the thought of sanding down the CP girl's breasts frightens me.

This was probably said before, but does the Thaasa ivory match CP BW?

      Thanks!

      ~Anrui

    8. ShinyDoll ivory is a perfect match for CP BW. *points to my Miyu/Thaasa hybrid*
It should be really easy to sand down her breasts, since they're barely there! In fact, I bet Shin-san would even do it for you! He was talking about making a boy torso for the body ages ago.

    9. Hmmmm...

      That sounds promising. :)

Well, I promised myself that I wouldn't buy any big doll purchase for a month or two, as I want to pay down the credit card, but HMMM. :D

Is there a direct way to contact Shin-san? His website is a bit scattered, and I'm not quite sure how to go about it.

      Thanks a lot! :)

      ~Anrui

    10. Anrui, I am in contact with Shin all of the time since I am his exclusive USA dealer. Shin has decided to avoid sanding, due to time constraints, etc, though he might be willing to do it. I agree with St James, in that, it would be extremely easy to sand the bust of the Thaasa, and you would find the resin is very co-operative. You'd also avoid the delay in having your Thaasa, as well as the extra cost of a custom request. In my opinion, with little effort, you could have a nicely developed or completely flat male chest.

A post or two down, Domuya 30cm Bobo was found to be maddening, and wondering how the SD size is. I had a flexi Poppouri (Bobo girl version), and yes. . .maddening, (especially in clothes), and wondered about the SD size. Well, if I thought small was difficult, SD size REALLY sent me over the edge! For me, the large simply offered more bulk and weight making it even more difficult, plus I found the body to be sort of clunky. The larger/heavier body parts greatly added to the lack of posing--more springing, more falling, more twisting around in clothes. Ours is on Ebay right now, if you want to try one out for a low price, but for us, it was way too frustrating. Also, in the slender body of the Thaasa, moving a button or snap, wearing a top out over pants, etc, in the instances of something loose on her, was easier to overcome than items being to tight on a Domuya body. If you would like to take a look at the comparison study we did on bodies, you'll see the exact Thaasa size differences. (click our site link in our signature, and go to Photo bjd Comparison Area) For me, her body is so enjoyable and graceful, making a slight concession, or alteration, once in a while is unimportant. Incidentally, we will soon have jeans made to fit Thaasa correctly, since jeans do need to fit right.

There are so many things which make Thaasa the be-all-end-all, for me, but my biggest joy is---if I think of something for her to do, she easily does it--for instance, pulling her sled up the hill. Having my Thaasa is like sharing a moment with a little person. Completely delightful!!! PM me or use the Contact Us link on our site, if there is anything I can answer for you.

    11. Sounds good, the only issue I'd have now then is whether the Juri 06 head will fit. :)

I guess I'll see how my money situation is in a month or two. :)

      Thanks a lot!

      ~Anrui

    12. Anrui -- I have a Juri '06 head on a Thaasa doll body. I needed to get the neck modded because it was too short. But you now have the option of ordering a Thaasa [through BJD Fantasy or through Shin himself] with a torso that has a longer neck. You just have to request it.

As for breasts, there's not a lot to sand, so they could easily be flattened.

    13. Still waiting to see the final result, although Shin-san has posted the head back to me after working his magic. Knowing that he is the consummate engineer, I'm sure it is going to be splendid. I'll do my best to remember to post a pic when she's back.

As St James said, the CP white is virtually the same colour as Thaasa ivory. When I had the head and body here together, I was delighted with how well they matched.

If you're not keen on doing the sanding work yourself, you might want to look for someone to do the modifications for you ... check in the customising forum. There are a number of individuals who will do body modifications for you. Thaasa are small-breasted, so it's not going to be a huge job!

    14. Do you have images of how you modded the neck and how you made the attachment with the Type 2 connection? I'd love to see.

    15. ah, so nice to see Shin-san getting props for his work. his bjd is quite arguably the best-engineered body on the market to date.

so glad playdate is representing Shin in the States...if i ever get into buying resin bjd's, Shin's would be on the top of my list.

      AFR

p.s. on a sidenote, my personal bias is for voluptous, curvaceous bjd's -- well-endowed, adult-bodied dolls. too often than not, i find the mainstream bjd collectors like their girls to be, erhm, well, to be blunt, "femininely flat." to each their own, i say, b/c i like my ladies to have curves to them!;)

so, if i were to get a shinydoll, i'd most likely mod the body by enhancing the boobage and bootiage, as it were, and add more muscularity to her appendages too.

    16. My vote is for the Thaasa.

Within seconds of having the Domuya Flexi in my hands, my decision was made not to have one. Perhaps the next generation will be vastly improved.

From the moment I took my Thaasa Nanae out of her box, I was in love with her fabulous engineering.

Yes, she is petite; however, my interest is in stable ability to pose and this girl has that in spades.

    17. I had a Domuya Fin...and sold her two days after I got her. It was a huge body with joints that went wild and didn't have a solid 'feel' to it. It felt very plastic and cheap.

My Thassa Akali arrived yesterday and I swear I'll never buy anything but ShinyDoll ever again. Not only does she have a heavy weight and joints so well engineered that she moves from pose to pose like a ballerina...she is smooth as marble and has the face of an angel. All of Doi Shin's dolls are, in my opinion, the finest made. I've had Volks, OD, CH, Domuya, Dollstown, Elfdoll...and more I can't even remember. Shinydoll is the best.

I'll love my CH St Mina forever and my little Unoa Lusis too...but when I buy a new doll from now on it will have to be a ShinyDoll.

    18. I currently have a Shinydoll Thaasa 1 body (the uber skinny one) and a Domuya Flexi Perennial. For gracefulness and holding a pose, no body male or female beats the Thaasa. I actually asked Shin-San if he was planning to make a male body, but he's not :(

This girl stands LIKE A ROCK.
In this picture, she is standing on ice (a frozen lake) with heavy wings stolen from another creature basically stuck into her shoulder joints and she is balancing just fine.

Her poses are just lovely in general. More pictures (warning for pseudo-artsiness and blank eyeless head):
      1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7.

In the pics she is with a Dollstown Paleskin head (heavily blushed in the first pic), but it is hard finding resin matches. I bought the body because I heard it went with Volks and similar colors and this one does NOT. It's very pale for an NS and not at all yellow. It goes with Aoi-tuki (I know, that is useful to no one except me) but not with anything else I've seen. I loved this body so much that when it didn't match the head I bought it for, I sold the head instead (yes, I actually have a floating body for the moment).

There is a comparison of the Domuya (girl) NS resin with several others here. (Link fixed)
I can take a comparison shot of the 2 resins (Shiny and Domuya) when I have some natural light if you are interested.

Although I love love love this girl's poseability, aesthetically I find her waaaaaay too skinny and prefer the Domuya (she has some curves). The Domuya flexi Perennial body is definitely my second favorite to pose after the Shiny doll (I haven't handled a regular flexi 60cm, only the taller model), but she doesn't stand as well. I haven't hot glued mine (it lives in the box since it is headless), but a friend (Quilla here on DOA) and I hot glue sueded her Domuya flexi Perennial, which took about 20 minutes and improved the doll's ability to stand *immensely*. In terms of poseability and gracefulness I really like the Domuya -- she is also very graceful. She is harder to place in standing poses, but the naturalness of her poses are quite lovely (so many dolls look odd and awkward unless you pose them very carefully, but neither of these dolls do). Hope that helps.

    19. laeticia, the Thaasa II body is much curvier than the Thaasa I. It poses just as well, too.

    20. Oh, I want a Thaasa II soooooo much!
