Don't They ALL Look The SAME? (Face Wise)

Aug 1, 2014

    1. I don't think dolls from different companies look alike. I can see how everyone thinks all luts look the same or soom looks the same and fairyland too. But lust looking like fairyland or fairyland looking like soom, I don't think so. Not in my opinion.

    2. I think the big reason why they look so similar is because they're cast in resin.

So while the general features might be slightly different, those differences get lost in the perfect, even-toned beige resin with nary a flaw in sight. The companies that have an aesthetic that allows to sculpt more minute details in the face (like facial muscles) will be easier to tell apart than the ones who like to simplify (which is most companies in the hobby, to some extent), because there's just more for the eye to hang on to. Sometimes a face-up will actually make it harder, too - if it has bright colours in it, it will distract the eye from those little details.

I'm surrounded by family members and boyfriend who, while supportive of my hobby, have zero interest in it, and they frequently just look at me weird when I try to show them dolls side-by-side and ask them for their input. If it's a painted and wigged sculpt they'll start telling me which wig or lip colour they like better. If it's a blank sculpt - forget it. They'll just be like "Um... are those the same doll?"

However, obviously when I'm picking out a doll I'd be on the hunt for certain features so my final "cull" list is going to made up of similar-looking dolls. My non-doll-interested family members will probably be able to tell dolls of different companies apart, but within a company? Nope. I remember I was trying to pick out an Iplehouse boy and my boyfriend (then very new one) would wave his hands in horror when I tried to ask him for his input because he was like I DON'T KNOW WHAT THE DIFFERENCES ARE, JUST TELL ME THE RIGHT ANSWER.

    3. LOL! It's best if they leave the decision up to us, isn't it?

    4. Personally, even within the same company, I can see the little differences in the dolls that they try and put in. The smooth, perfect resin does make it a bit harder, but I have a very detail oriented mind. Too bad I have clumsy painting hands, or I'd do the face up for my doll and be done with it! I guess they do all look similar, but they do have different faces, too, and usually there are small differences in every sculpt. But I can understand someone not into the hobby being very confused as well.

    5. I can recognize dolls from a company because of the brand thing, Soom, Iplehouse, DOD, Fairyland...they all are very easy to recognize because of the style/brand, even so, the sculpts don't look the same to me. The wonderful thing about this hobby is that there can be 100 people with the same doll but all the 100 dolls look different because they are customized by different owners. Now, I don't think a Soom doll looks the same as a Iplehouse or a fairyland doll so I don't see what's the problem here.

Uniqueness is subjective. For someone "this" doll is unique and for another one it isn't. Also, what makes these dolls unique is the owner. If the owner loves the doll then that doll is unique for them and that's all that matters. Many popular dolls are not unique in my eyes, the most simple ones are because that's just what I like, my favorite doll is the cheapest one but he is unique and the most beautiful one for me. It's all up to you.

I never had a problem with my dolls looking the same or someone saying something about it...but my mom told me that these 2 boys are the same:

I was shocked...they don't look nothing alike to me lol but my mom was like "why did you get the same doll?" O__o

    6. I don't even think that the same doll can look... well... the same? Depending on styling, colors, faceup choice they can look severely varied. However I often plague myself with my trend of getting "similar" dolls. They're definitely not the same but they follow some patterns since its those aesthetics that appeal to me the most. xP

    7. I actually found this topic interesting. Being new and learning the brands, I will have to say that a lot of them do look very similar to me. But as it has been pointed out that when looking at a monotone blank face- how much diversity can there really be? But on the other side of the scale, there are a lot of different "categories" of adult, teen, young, and even non humans to choose from. And those do look different to me.

    8. Actually I can kind of see where she was coming from. They do have very similar facial features, but I also don't find it surprising when people gravitate towards dolls that have a lot of similarities to each other. There's obviously a certain aesthetic that attracts the person to them. Which probably correlates to people who only own all of one companys dolls as well.

I know everyone that I own has droopy puppy eyes...

    9. Agreed... I can see it as well. While those two sculpts aren't identical, they definitely look like they could be related to each other. An older and younger brother pair, for instance.

Over here, I do have some duplicates in the collection, so sometimes when a friend or family member looks at one and then another they're *right* about the two dolls being the same sculpt. Or one being a variant (dreaming/sleeping, different resin color, Type 1 vs Type 2, etc.) on the other. XD

Personally, I can usually see similarities between different dolls in the same line, from the same company and even from the same county... but that's just their shared sculptural style. It's very, very rare for me to look at two different sculpts, even from the same artist, and say "You guys really do look exactly the same. o_0"

    10. I think every company has some uniqueness to it.
I tend to stick to the same companies though. So i haven't really been noticing any similarities.
I'm sure companies make sculpts that appeal to the masses, which might be similar to other companies.
Like i feel Crobidoll Ys and Little Monica Enrill look very similar! However thats good on my part.
As I love Ys (and had one), but he's too big for me. So eventually I'm going to try for Enrill as he's a tad smaller.
I mean there is always going to be similarities. Thats just natural in anything.
But in the end its how the doll is put together that really matters. Because that can make a huge differnce in the overall look.
And thats all I have to say. C:

    11. I sometimes think that many dolls (within and across companies) do look similar in a way, but never wholly identical. I quite like the cohesiveness companies have from this, it makes it easier to find a sibling doll for your current one and like others have said, it's good branding so I know which company to go to when searching for a specific look. But it also gives you quite a bit of choice to find that perfect sculpt, as in you don't like this sculpt's nose, well this sculpt (whether from the same company or another) is kind of similar and it has a nose you like. It saves you a bit of modding.

So while some sculpts do look similar, I don't think that all companies are now only releasing this one universal cross-company look, or variations of it, but rather they are releasing variations of their signature look, and any similarity to another company is by chance/a cross-over of aesthetics (if that is even the right word).

    12. I have this feeling to.
I agree that each one has it uniqueness, specialy with customs and everything... BUT I feel like seen a lot of similar sculpts too, that's why that NOW I know that I prefer more "different" dolls, usually from smaller companies, such as Doll chateau (not so small..), lillycat cerisedollls, dust of dolls, irrealdoll, dream high studio, woodolls, mewifish, etc...

I do like the more "comom" dolls, and, in fact I have some, but now i prefer this more diferent, I think they remember me more of ilustrations than of people, and I specially prefer when the eyes are smaler and they have a very unique face (i'm a little bit tired of the manga look like).

But this is MY OPINION, it's what I noticied is my preference^^

    13. I don't think they look the same.
But the thing is there're so much dolls for now so it's hard to make something realy unique.

    14. I have seen dolls that look quite similar from different companies, however I can almost always tell them apart so I don't really agree dolls are starting to be made all looking like the same cookie cutter face. I don't mind it if they look kinda similar, although for the most part I don't see it that often, actually it's pretty rare in my opinion. I think it's really your own perception, or maybe you're just not used to them. I feel like the more you look at them you'll notice how different they all look.

For me I always consider if I already have a similar looking doll before purchasing so I hope dolls can continue being unique. :sumomo:

    15. No when I look at each doll they all look different but luts dolls use the some of the same dolls to use as a limited face-up but besides that every doll I see looks complete different in every way.

    16. I think there's a lot of truth in what people have said about how those who are less familiar with a certain aesthetic style (or company, or sculpt artist) would naturally have a harder time telling the difference between sculpts. When I was in high school and drew more regularly, people would always look over my shoulder and say "Isn't that the same person you were drawing before?" And it was somebody completely different. This, of course, could be a comment on my art skillz (XD) but the drawings looked completely different to me, because I'd been staring at them and studying them in great detail.

There are some companies where I think the sculpts all look very similar, and whether I like that or not depends on whether the style appeals to me. The more I study them, though, the more I can tell them apart.

    17. Dolls from some companies can look a bit alike or their style just quite similar but most of them aren't so... I have seen many heads from various companies without face up but still they are totally different and will look more different after face up.

    18. I have to say that a lot of blank doll both boys and girl do look the same. I guess the sculptor of a company sculpts a basic form and leaves it up to artists to do faceup to make it different? But then again special and limited edition dolls do tend to be unique looking but sometimes its just things like fangs or cat ears that sets them apart. I wouldn't get to many dolls from the same company even though I would give them unique faceups. I would buy bodies from a company I like though but I would like to mix things up with the head. Doll Chateau is my favorite company because so many of the sculpts do look different from each other and unique compared to other companies as well.

    19. Well, maybe it's good))) If you think they are all the same, it means you don't like any of them in particular. So...you don't have to purchase them, and you don't have to think about them. That's cool, freedom of dolly addiction)

    20. When you browsing many sites in searching... well, it starting to look that some firms have same sculpts. But I think it depends from person and dolls that similar for me are completely different to other.
