"Downsizing" the hobby -- c/would you?

Jan 11, 2013

    1. I don't think I could downsize. I'd probably have to be pretty desperate for money to sell my dolls. Like...eating cardboard desperate. Or, without monetary issues to consider, I'd have to fall completely out of love with them, which I don't see happening. I'm that way in...all of my hobbies. I consider selling some stuff and then get that...grabby hands feeling. So, I think I'd fail in the end XD

    2. I only have one doll so I cannot downsize but my friend is finding herself forced to. She has been struggling with an illness for the last year and is trying to sell 3 of her 6 dolls just so she can pay her medical bills. It is very sad.

    3. Urrrghhhh. When I was waiting for my third doll (my second SD), I thought I wouldn't be able to handle three SDs and that a total of three dolls would already feel like a lot. That was a year and a half ago. Today I'm waiting for my 13th doll, a small SD. Now I feel like I definitely have a large crew.

Downsizing, though? I can't see myself do that. Last Saturday, I sold a doll for the first time, but it was an event doll that I'd never really warmed to and it didn't feel like selling one of my own. I can't imagine at this point that I'd part with any of the dolls that I have chosen myself. At the same time, I think I should probably stop here, because this *is* getting to be a lot.

    4. I really wanna downsize, but I can't! I've gotten attached to all of them! The only one I'm gonna sell is my MNF, cause she's very easy to replace. I also wanna sell my Soulkid Chase, but I just can't betray those puppy eyes :(

So, instead of downsizing I'm now trying hybrids with shared bodies. My goal is to have two SD bodies (maybe three), and at least two heads per body, and then a couple of smaller dolls. If it works, it'll be great, both cheap and space saving. (But my mind is already making secret plans about getting two new SD bodies. Damn.) I don't have that many heads yet, but I've got plans. So I think you could say that I'm planning on downsizing a doll collection I don't even own yet XD

    5. XD im actually a doll and wig hoarder so most likely i will hoard up to 20 dolls if possible and from there only trade them for another doll that intrests me ^_^ i do the same with my wigs i trade them for ones i could use (but sometimes its hard to let go) ^_^

    6. I'm currently downsizing my collection since I realized that I wasn't really doing much with some of my dolls (and they're pretty expensive to just gather dust) so I'm going from about 12 (plus some floating heads) to 4 and hopefully no more floating heads. I do have plans to buy 2 dolls this year though, but I think 6 will be my new max.

I haven't regretted selling/downsizing any of my dolls, having a smaller number gives me more time to enjoy my favorite dolls :)

    7. Right now I'm contemplating if I want to try a second doll again. I've owned several dolls, but everyone aside from the doll that got me into the hobby has been sold. I think that it would be nice to add another doll-- but I don't have a lot of money and I become unhappy with 'unfinished' dolls. Only recently was I able to get the proper faceup I want for my current doll-- and a new body that fits him better has been released-- so he'll need that and new clothing + shoes to fit it. At the same time I can also purchase a head that fits his old body from the same company, and then I'd have 2 dolls. But I'm unsure if I want to or not.

    8. I have downsized a lot over the years. I started out hot 'n heavy with the hobby, and had as many as 22 bjd at a time (I think, maybe more), but over time, my income has been needed for non-doll things, plus I just got into other things as time went by. After 8 years in hobby I feel I've probably worked through it for the most part. Dolls are not as compelling for me as they once were (for better or worse).

Even so, I have six dolls. One's for sale, and one more is on the way... so it's not like I have none, haha! But sometimes it feels like I have so few compared to before! I've gone through about 200 or so, though!!

It's been fun! I have no regrets. :-)

    9. I honestly don't know if I could, though thankfully I don't have that many BJD's at the moment. The only time I can see myself downsizing is if there are some dolls I start to have trouble bonding with.

    10. I don't think i could own less than two because even if i eventually am not active in the hobby, my doll would always need a friend. :P

    11. I am currently downsizing because I no longer feel any real attachment to my dolls and I REALLY believe that it was their number that made them feel less "special." I was REALLY into collecting them and ended up with over a dozen, and it was just so much work to play with them that I left them sitting on a shelf gathering dust for years. I am feeling a little sad twinge because I just sent my dreaming vampire elf El off to a new home, and I really loved him once, but he's no longer as attractive to me as he once was. I will probably try and thin my entire collection out then use some of the funds to start searching for my new "type." I have always collected only boys and would like to get a girl, plus I'd like boys with more manly bodies than I have now. Personally I think downsizing is a good, natural way to transition into different dolls without totally breaking the bank!

    12. I have downsized to the point were I don't have any dolls now. I'm slowly getting back in the hobby. The reason being was that I had no money to keep up with them and therefore I couldn't bond with the dolls I had. I don't have any regrets, just wish I had more money at the time. Now, I realize that I still love it but I just want one or maybe two dolls and that is it.

    13. Yes. I just felt like my group was too varied -- it was starting to feel chaotic, so I decided to cut back to a few fave companies and sell the ones that no longer fit. I've sold off a couple, and have some others packed away that I am also intending to sell. The number of dolls might creep back up at least somewhat, and that's ok. I just want to feel like my dolls fit together and aren't all a big hodge podge of resin.

    14. It really feels great when you get to sell the dolls you dont love anymore and downsize a bit your collection. I felt sometimes overwhelmed with so many dolls and not having time for all of them! So, no regrets and I'll do it again! ;)

    15. I just got into the hobby, and only have 1 doll with another on the way, but I could never imagine having 20 dolls! I am kind of afraid of purchasing that many, and being unable to spoil them all

    16. I'm currently thinking about doing this exact thing actually. Darn minifee are so addictive and cute, I just want them all. But I'm feeling like I have too many of "the same" type of doll. 5 full ones with 3 floating heads seems overwhelming to me.
I don't think 5 is the problem, I think it's 5 very similar dolls that is. I love all their head molds so much though that it's such a hard decision! I feel like I would do better with the same number of dolls if they were considerably different in size/sculpting etc.

I *think* I'd like to cut the minifee down to 3 full dolls and 1 or 2 floating heads for faceup practice. In order to help me decide I've been in the slow process of re-doing all their faceups, hoping that the ones who have been difficult will still be difficult and therefore will make the decision easy for me. But the one that I was sure would be going ended up turning out almost exactly as I pictured her from the moment I decided to order her. So now she's definitely not going anywhere. So who knows!

The next step, once re-faceupping is complete and if I'm still unsure, is to spend one month focusing on each doll.
I'm very slack about creating characters and personalities for them, which I feel is something they need to make me really happy with them. So my month of devotion will include creating a character and set traits for them, nailing down their individual style to make sewing for them easier, sewing them 2-3 outfits and taking lots of pictures of them.
If at the end I still don't love them all and am still feeling overwhelmed, I'll make the necessary cuts.
I also need to seriously weed through my wig and eye collection too, but this won't be done until after all the above stuff.

So to sum it up... I haven't yet, currently feel the need to, yes I think I can and am making some plans to, but will refill the collection with more varied dolls. I think downsizing is a natural part of the growth of the hobby. I don't see myself ever outgrowing the hobby, but I do see my tastes and wants changing overtime :)

    17. I have a hard time imagining selling the ones I have, because I love them so much. But if the time came to downsize I would just pick maybe 1 or 2 I absolutely couldn't part with and let the rest go.

It's sad to think of though!

    18. I have collected Vintage Dolls for many years and only have three bjds at the moment. I downsize quite a lot with my other dolls so I can add new ones. I had to downsize to start this new hobby. I have not had regrets selling any dolls there is always something else that comes along that you love more. Sometimes even the doll you part with comes along once again, thats when you know if you did the right thing selling it if you have to buy him or her again, thank fully I haven't had to. :)

    19. I think I couldn't, never. I have a doll with which I can't bond but I can't let her go either, I know I would regret

    20. I have currently 2 dolls so i dont think i can downsize currently but i dont think i would upsize either .
