"Downsizing" the hobby -- c/would you?

Jan 11, 2013

    1. I'd sell all of their clothes and props and stuff but I don't think I could sell my actual dolls. If I *had* to sell dolls then I'd hang on to Ces for as long as humanly possible. As for in a voluntary (not necessary) situation I wouldn't downsize my collection any, but at the same time I won't be upsizing it anymore after my Long arrives either.

    2. I have considered downsizing, last year I lived in a large three bedroom apartment in chicago, and Ironicly due to lack of display space, the 20 some odd dolls I had seemed like just so much. I have do adorable loveable and very acrobatic cats. So displaying them was just almost impossible. I considered sizing down to only a few, but in the long run was never able to do so. Keeping in mind, my roomate also is a doll collector and she had 20 some odd dolls herself so thats 40 dolls arguing for mantle space. Because we knew we were going to be moving for a few years, we had always put off buying display cases just not wanting to move them. We had talked about sizing down the collection several times.

However, when we settled in our new apartment (smaller but much more display area) we bought two large cases, and another planned in the future. The dolls are now all on display, and to be honest they no longer seem so overwhelming. I have considered weeding them out, dolls I no longer have much interest in, but as several people have said, I doubt they would fetch enough in sale, to offset the good memories tied to them. So for now, they stay.

But I would like to add, that at times I feel very envious of those that have two or three dolls and spoil them, but by now I just have so much attachment to mine, not sure I could ever do it.

    3. I've definitely thought about downsizing my dolls. I haven't done so because I'm still uncertain. I don't want to sell a doll and later attempt to repurchase it.

    4. This idea has crossed my mind recently and as much as I would feel guilty to adopt out some of my dollies, it would be out of necessity for sure. With the possibility of either a looming furlough or layoffs, the extra funds would be handy. My problem is deciding who stays and who goes :( I thought about the last one in, first one goes scenario but the last one I adopted is a tan LY (I've always wanted one and finally had the funds to get one) and then the job problem rears its ugly head. It figures as much that this would happen...

    5. I like the idea of only having a couple of dolls, but I'm not really willing to part with the rest of mine just yet. I may put some away for a while and only have my favorites on display, though.

    6. If I had kept all the dolls I had bought over the years, I would have 27 - I currently only have one and he is my forever doll!^^
I miss pretty much all of them, but it's down to my bad financial planning really and they are the first things to go when times get tough.

I've had a solo doll for around 9 months maybe and would dearly love to start collecting again, but will only do so when I know I can keep them for always.

    7. I've had seven dolls, most at one time was five. Not much compared to many others, but now I have two and I'm not very active in the community or with the dolls anymore. They've both been sleeping in their boxes since July 2012. So yeah - I will probably sell at least one of them. Not sure about the last one, as she is special.

But honestly, I sold my most special girl long time ago (my first bjd) and she is really the one I miss the most. So if I got the chance to do it all again I would have gone for the sentimental dolls to keep, and not because of value market wise. Especially if you are not in the hobby that much anymore, because then the dollies are really just for you personally.

    8. Not just with BJD's, but with all dolls, it is best to let them go to a better home if you don't love them anymore. Downsizing because you need more money or room would be near impossible for me.

    9. Right now I don't have very many (I have one on the way and one on layaway) but I guess I would down size if I really really needed to. :kitty2

    10. Well I have ten dolls (wow - that surprised even me!) and even though I'm losing interest (mostly due to the cost) I'm still not ready to down-size yet. I have all their original boxes and can pack them up in an instant if I have to. I just look at their sweet faces and nope, not going to happen any time soon :(

    11. I think if I had to downsize something, and as I'm new to this hobby, I'd pick another one of my collections before picking on Pixie.

    12. I have abandonment issues and am prone to severe nostalgia attacks. So it's been very clear to me from the start that I had best be VERRRRRY careful about what doll I bring into the house, because they'll not likely leave again.

    13. i need to downsize once in awhile bec. i need money :(

    14. Yes. I'm downsizing right now! :) to be really honest, I think I was too greedy until now buying all these dolls even if I didn't play too much with the ones I already owned.
I started to think of my dolls of asking me, "Hey, aren't I enough?" which is currently stopping me from buying other dolls without giving it a serious thought.
There's never going to be enough >_<; but I think I can at least keep selling and buying instead of buy buy buy!

    15. I am currently downsizing! Most of my dolls were impulse buys or I decided they no longer suited my style. Also having dolls from 3 different sizes is tricky! And my dolly space was getting cluttered...

      How far did you downsize?
I had 1 YoSD, 3 MSDs and 1 SD. So from 5 dolls to only one MSD.

Are you more content without the hoards?
Yes! It freed a lot of space and allowed me to get rid of some of my impulse buys! Not to mention I got a nice sum of money, enabling me to spoil rotten my incoming doll!

      Any regrets?
      None at all!
      :)

    16. If I had to I'd probably sell the dolls that aren't limited (which aren't a lot), so I could buy them back if I miss them.
But I wouldn't just for a feeling or for the fact that people tell me to downsize.

    17. I've thought about selling my two first dolls, and just keeping Syjon, honestly. Main reason being buying two new dolls I think I'll love better. I can't shake the sentiment of wanting to keep my first doll, and worrying I'll regret selling them since I still do like them. I routinely have bursts of 'lets throw some crap away' and literally trash things including wigs because I don't feel like they'll sell easily enough to be worth the time and effort.

    18. I'm currently downsizing my collection to just my favorite few and not planning on adding anymore as I have discovered that if I have too many, I get overwhelmed. Too many to display, clothe, maintain, etc.
I do not regret selling any of them as I'm keeping the ones I like and have special meaning to me. The biggest reason is also the new doll prices keep going up, and I have found other things to collect that are more in my price range.

    19. My idea of downsizing is basically stop buying dolls LOL I made a list early on of characters I needed to shell & have stuck fairly close to that. So once I get that list (which morphs but still...) I WILL stop buying dolls for the most part. In fact I've accumulated enough stuff to be able to do most of the cosplays I want w/o buying much else.
But I doubt I will ever get RID of dolls until I'm old & feeble & going to assisted living LOL I will undoubtedly sell off clothing or swap it out (as I do for myself :D).
I still possess my vinyl records from the 60s (haven't had a turntable for years) to give an idea of how I DON'T get rid of things important to me ...

    20. Although I have sold dolls before, usually the reason was either me not bonding with the doll or me preferring to use the money towards buying a different doll or both. My tastes changed a bit overtime, but I've yet to sell a doll for that reason alone, I guess I'm a teensie bit sentimental that way. Once I've bonded, I've bonded. Recently my collection has grown quite a bit though and I do feel like I should maybe slow down a bit, lol. It's very expensive and time-consuming to spoil what soon will be 22 dolls and in that way I'm sometimes jealous of people with only a few dolls that have several outfits/wigs/etc. Mine get one or maybe two, but I take my time getting them absolutely perfect. And I couldn't just own, say, three dolls. My wishlist keeps nagging at me too much and I have too many OC's :P

In the event that I do one day grow tired of my dollies and decide to get out of this hobby, then I probably will sell most of them. No idea where I'd begin though, as they are all special for different reasons and the ones that weren't are already gone. Also, my interests change quite often and I will be totally into something one moment and into something else the next, but the dolls seem to be a pretty stable hobby for now. I just don't see myself leaving this hobby for a long time. Even my husband was a bit surprised at first, since he knows I'm fickle that way ;) He was a bit afraid when I got my first doll, since she was so expensive and he figured I would soon grow tired of her (she's still here, btw). I guess it's because the dolls give me a reason to do all the things I already liked, but then grew tired of. I'm still "fickle" in so far as I'll be totally into face-ups one day and sewing the next, but it all evolves around the dolls now and it has been that way for a while :)
