"Downsizing" the hobby -- c/would you?

Jan 11, 2013

    1. I can't see myself downsizing unless I leave the hobby entirely. I certainly don't want my collection to keep on growing and growing, but when I sell a doll I generally end up getting another one not long afterwards.

    2. I mentioned this before in another post, but I have downsized from my collection in the past, a few times.

When I first got in to this hobby, I ended up with 2 dolls pretty quickly. I held on to them for a while, but due to financial reasons (college, moving, big life changes), I felt it would be irresponsible for me to keep my dolls. I admit going down to 0 I missed the hobby quite a bit. So when I was able to again, I bought more! I started out with 1 doll (Tan version from one of the two I originally owned), and then that quickly grew to 2. Suddenly I was up to 7 dolls, but I was about to get married so I downsized down to 3. Cost of getting married, and again feeling guilty about money, or just feeling that a doll wasn't the right fit for me.

Now I am back up to 6 dolls! With money being less and less of a problem for me I don't see myself getting rid of any of the dolls I currently have, are on the way, or have plans for in the future!

I think that my previous dolls taught me a lot about what my tastes are, and which dolls will fit my life style & tastes better. I have also found that the styles of BJD has changed a lot since I first entered in the hobby, which has made it a lot more fun for me as well. I see my interests in larger sized BJD growing as I get older as well. I really enjoy tinys, and I feel that I always will, but I am starting to enjoy the larger sized ones as well. ^^

    3. How far did you downsize?
      From 8 to 0.

Are you more content without the hoards?
Yes. I'm a minimalist and hate clutter.

      Any regrets?
None at all. I still want dolls. I plan to get two and stick with that, but they are both dolls I've never owned.

    4. I have two right now, a third one that has no name because I want to sell him but haven't so I don't really count him, and I haven't thought of selling the two but I'm also not into the hobby like I was. Priorities changed and I've changed so much since the beginning of me joining this hobby back in 07. I still like to have my dolls and have them on my dresser but besides that I don't ever take them out or go to meetups since I'm always busy on the weekends. I miss going to them but I always seem to have something planned.

    5. I have 9, I haven't done much with them (other than occasionally bringing one out to admire for a bit) in the last several years as life reared it's ugly head with a lovely cocktail of health, financial and familial issues. I suppose if I haven't given any of them up by now, I most likely would not. When I consider them numerically and as far as accessories and the space everything takes up, I would like to simplify a bit, but when it comes down to examining each individually, I'm far too sentimental.

    6. No because i think i will have at the most 3 bjds no more than that.

    7. I have a lot of dolls (to me), and I don't think I could part with any of them. I have one that I'm going to gift to a girl I know for her birthday, but I think that's a bit different... she's always loved her much more than I do, so I've kept her around specifically for this reason.

When I buy a doll, generally, I know as soon as I open the box whether they'll stay or go, and I sell them fairly quickly. For the ones that I have at the moment... I can't see myself selling any of them anytime soon. Maybe one day when in need of money/something else, I guess I probably would.

I know that I'll probably NEVER sell Audrey (Delf Soony) or Alyss (Puki Flora) though.

    8. My boyfriend will soon move together with me and I thought I'd maybe start to downsize when it comes to the day the we live together. But the opposite is happening, he is buying me dolls and my collection grows and grows. I don't see me downsizing at all^^

    9. To those who haven't downsized: would you, could you, should you feel the need to?

Actually, yes--I would and I feel that I should (for reasons of time, space, and money!). I have made a plan to only keep 5 dolls and to sell excess ones. Right now I'm up to 3 (2 MSDs, 1 tiny), waiting for 1 (DC Ada). I'm already considering selling my Mewiefish XB-12... but I'm a little worried about doing so. There are only 6-8 XB-12s out there, so I'd want to make perfectly sure that she's not for me before I send her off. I think the problem might just be her clothes, so I'm going to try and garb her correctly and see how I feel after that.

I absolutely could not sell my two MSDs. One is my first doll, the other is friggin' adorable. Don't want to sell them, don't even like the thought of it!

    10. I'm trying to ^^;

    11. A few years ago I was slowly reaching the number of 30 dolls so I decided to sell a few. Most of them were heads for which I wouldn't be able to buy a body anytime soon, bodies that none of the heads fitted on or blank dolls I had plans for, but I had too many plans for other dolls too. Although I do feel a bit sad as all those dolls had potential and I really liked their molds, it also felt great. I had more time and space in my head for my other dolls. For me it helped to focus less on the doll that's gone and more on the dolls that are still here.
I now have over 30 dolls and am again thinking about downsizing. It's time I get back to a core group of dolls I really like and sell those that I think are just nice. It's going to be hard, but I think it will be worth it in the end. I don't have as much time for my dolls as I used to, so having less dolls means more time with each doll.

    12. I have 25 plans for dolls on my favorite sculpts. That likely wont grow unless a doll i MUST have surfaces. I also have several custom monster high dolls and plans for more. I dont see myself downsizing yet... But that might change when i have all my wanted troupe

    13. Out of my 13 (oops, 14!) dolls, not counting the two on the way, I have 7 that I could never part with :aheartbea. If I could figure out how to post a picture :doh, I would certainly sell the others.

    14. I've been thinking about a literal "downsize" in my collection, since I've decided SD really isn't the size for me. I have one SD boy that I've been considering letting go for quite some time now because he doesn't get much attention and really spends most of his time in his box nowadays. As for the others, I don't think I could part with any of my MSD-size dolls. I could probably let the tinies go, and have considered it briefly on a few occasions. I'm on the verge of letting my only Yo-SD go as well, but can't really decide on that. I want to keep my collection manageable, and stay under 20 dolls. I'm at 16 now and my wish-list (the realistic wish list, at least) is short, so I think I can manage to stay under 20 resin roommates. :)

    15. Oh goodness, I think that there could be specific circumstances where I downsized how many dolls I own, but they would have to be very specific circumstances. Extreme financial strain for instance, but I don't know the extent it would have to be for more to do that. Other than that I think I would only downsize it space became a severe issue. Most of my dolls can be stored away neat and tidy, so I would certainly have to get a lot more to have this issue, but in that case I might downsize.

    16. Well, im currently planning on finding a home with my bf together, and that would mean having a living room = more space! (I live with my parents now so have to do with just my bedroom to store my dolls) I currently have 1 bjd, so that wont be needing 'downsizing' although..even if I had more space...I think I will have to downsize my porcelain dolls one day, they take up quite some space (I even have a 90 cm one) with their dresses and such. (it would be really hard to do so! seeing im the kind of person that 'rescues' dolly's on markets because I think its sad if they get thrown away when no one buys them)

    17. I don't like the idea of 'downsizing' my collection. 'Downsizing' to me sounds like selling dolls even though you want to keep them, due to outside pressures (not having enough money for more dolls, for example). I would rather keep the dolls I want to keep, and find alternative ways to address the other pressures (say, by sewing or sculpting commissions to earn more money.

I don't mind selling things when they don't fit in my collection (for example, if I decide a character doesn't really fit my story, or a head doesn't fit its character), but I don't really see that as 'downsizing' because I no longer want the dolls :sweat

    18. satoru I have sold a few of topic dolls as I just wasn't interested in them and I don't like keeping things I no longer want. I have not yet felt the need to sell a bjd though. When you say you are no longer active in the hobby do you mean you don't want anything to do with bjds and they give you no pleasure because if that's the case then maybe you should sell them but if you still find enjoyment from them even if you don't do as much with them as you used to then hang on to them. There is no rule that states we must do x amount of things with our dolls. Would you miss them if they were gone? Take your time and don't rush into anything you may regret. In the end though do what feels right for you :)

    19. This is something that I've been going back and forth on for a long time. I have all kinds of different dolls and have thought of selling some, but I can't bring myself to do it. They all mean something to me and to be honest, I'm not sure if I ever could--even if I desperately needed the money :/

    20. I don't think I could downsize, at least not right now. All my dolls mean something special to me - my very first doll, one my mom and I chose together, one my best friends bought me... they all have such sentimental value that I can't even think about giving any of them up. Maybe someday, but not yet.
