Ever come to love a mold you once hated?

Oct 24, 2009

    1. The same , when I was just getting into the hobby anything deviating from " normal" body look would freak me out...now I am looking for unique sculpt , extra joints or interesting body shape :)

    2. Not precisely a doll but a whole company, and that's Volks.

I used to dislike their dolls because the way they looked like in the company photos, but after seeing some customs on them it was love :D sadly they're way out of my league, so I don't plan on owning one :(

    3. Doll Chateau...Something about them was really unsettling...But I really like the Bella and Elizabeth sculpts. I ESPECIALLY love Elizabeth...But probably won't own her for awhile..But when I do I got PLAAANS.

    4. Yes, I used to really dislike the Pukifee Flora but then I found my Best Friend (Hiddlelocked) and she has a Pukifee Flora. She is absolutely gorgeous. She's such a sweetie.

    5. Dollfie Dream Alice Kuonji is yet another example for me... At first I disliked her... then I started wanting her more and more... until finally my best friend acted as the terrible enabler she is and pushed me into chasing after one... TTuTT;

    6. I fully agree that from Hate to Love just one step.

When i first saw Zaoll i thought- what an ugly doll?! Why people buy her? Big ass, short legs, strange eyes.
Now guess what was the first bjd i bought? :)
I adore her from top to toe :aheartbea. I can't remind the moment when i changed my mind, but now i consider her the most awesome doll. Maybe i tried to find out so hard what was she unique with, looking tones of her pictures, that i even didn't notice that i felt in love with her sculpt.

The second one was Dollshe Saint. I also didn't understand madness around him. I didn't consider him neither handsome, nor interesting.
This summer i went on my first bjd meeting in our city. There were about 20 dolls, among which there was Max- my friend's Saint. I critically examined him from all the sides and made one big mistake- i took him on my hands.. That was the moment i changed my mind. All the bjds i took before him were so ..hmm..naughty, 'unhandy', uncomfortable for me, that i could hardly stand them. And only Max found out to be so friendly and kind to me. He sat on my hands like it was so usual and natural for both of us, like we were friends the whole our lives. Yeah, that was an awkward moment, i used to say so often that Saints are antipathetic, and fell in love with the first one , i met :fangirl:

    7. Yes, that has happened to me, too :) When I started collecting I never understood why people loved Doll Chateau dolls with those crazy bodies and proportions and faces... But the more of them I see around the more I like them and today I am really considering getting myself a DC doll :)

    8. When I first saw pictures of Zaoll Muse, I thought you must really be a little crazy to buy that doll. Now, I own one and it is one of my very favorite sculpts! XD I think what happened is that I saw one in real life, and they just completely won me over, they are the perfect size, so much fun to play with, the proportions are perfect(to me)and the face just really appealed to me in real life! And also, I saw more and more people who were doing something odd, something out of the ordinary with their Muses and that made me realize it is the perfect sculpt for an otherwordly kind of character. So, I'm perfectly happy with my own Muse <3 Isn't it strange how that sometimes happens? Teaches us to not go by first impressions, I suppose...

    9. Oh, I got such a kick out of reading this thread! It's sort of funny for me, because... well.

When I was getting started, I was in love with Iplehouse's EID bodies but the faces were kinda eh. I considered getting Akando and modding him a bit because the only others at the time were Evan and Luo, and Evan was much too young-looking and Luo was fugly. Guess who I ended up with and is now my favorite doll? :doh

Furthermore, I always hated FL's Chloe sculpt, with her botox duck lips and such. It didn't help that she's a really popular sculpt and I saw her everywhere all the time, either. Then one day when I was trying to pick a sculpt for my lady, I stumbled on a pic of F65 Chloe taken from a most flattering angle. Not only did I fall in love with the picture, I realized then that the sculpt was the closest I'd found to what the character looked like when I was drawing her. So now I have a F65 of my own and a LTF Chloe coming, too, and I absolutely adore them both. Jeez!

Ironically enough, Iplehouse Claude was the only doll I've ever loved at first sight. I ordered him straightaway and when he got here, I took one look in the box and thought "Meh." Despite being my favorite from the get-go, poor Van is my least favorite doll.

Apparently I don't know my own tastes at all!

    10. I recently got two 5Stardoll Batboys. Now I LOVE the 5StarDoll tinies, but I hated the batboys. Just the look on their faces was just... eh... But while looking for dollies for a gift I stumbled upon a thread selling two, one grey one white. I instantly had an idea for them and I needed them and now I have them. XD My little twins are just some of my favorites already!

I've pretty much decided I have to not say no. Cause at some point something will pop up and I will want. Like the DZ Star. The blank and faceuped versions just seemed so bugeyed and weird. Then I saw someone who put one on a DC MSD body and I just fell in love! Now I really want one so I can dye it a nice blue or such color and have a bug eyed alien.

    11. I once hated the look of Doll Chateau dolls. True aliens. Now I see them as a sort of elongated human, expanded into the future. Isn't it the Doll Chateau creator who has a little boy with Autism? I might be wrong. I think I read that somewhere. If so, that explains a lot! Perhaps the maker is seeing humans through her child's eyes. I know. It's far out, but I like to think it is true.

    12. I used to not like Art dolls that much because of their bodies but now I kinda want a Leeke World Mikhala!!! Her face is just really sweet looking <3

    13. I used to be sick of seeing Minifees all over the place but then I "begrudgingly" decided to get one about a year ago and now I'm about to get two more. I was the same way about Doll Chateau and I ended up getting a Bella and I love her.

    14. :doh SAAAAAME. I hate the Volks photography. Flickr groups of Volks dolls are like evil enabler cults. :XD:

Same!! I used to think they looked like creepy aliens. Haha, but they're actually quite adorable.

As for me, I imagine when I first got into this hobby I would have hated seeing DC's dolls. But now, I love every single one of them.

    15. I had this with all the DollShe dolls. When I first saw them, it was a complete no no. I couldn't understand why anyone would want one. But then bit by bit certain characters shelled in those company dolls grew on me and I started to create characters who would suit sculpts like that so heh, never say never I guess.
I also used to hate DIM, until I saw some with proper pretty faceups.

    16. I never really cared much for most of CP's sculpts when I first joined the hobby, and only really liked the Puki Pukisha because it was a cute cat (the rest of their sculpts just didn't work for me). I particularly remember that people were absolutely wild about the Shiwoo and El sculpts, and I couldn't understand why. I just didn't see the appeal, and knew they weren't the dolls for me.

I now have 11 CP sculpts, that I adore. Three are Shiwoos, one's an El. I fully intend to get at least one more Shiwoo and two more Els, too. I'm not sure what happened there, but I was looking at blank heads and faceplates on FL's website, and suddenly something with those two in particular just clicked, falling into place, and I'm totally in love now with both a company and two specific sculpts I just didn't care about at all when I started, and was absolutely sure I'd never own.

    17. Another that I remember not liking at first was actually my first resin....Resinsoul Song. The company pictures just looked awful. I didn't like many of what I had seen at the time...Then I found Avalon, MY Avalon...And I just fell in love. He's now one of my favorites, he's not as spoiled as he used to be since he's not the only MSD but he was the first and that gave way to Kazumi, Noah, Vala and eventually Veronica too. So hats off to RS Song!

    18. Back in 2009 my sister got Cuprit from Soom and I realized I wanted a Soom lady too. Too bad I did not like any of their faces very much. I considered Topaz and Vesuvia, but no, not for me. Beryl I didn't want, because I though she had an ugly expression. Oh well, it didn't took long until I just had to have her. I think it was because of some wig modelling pictures I saw on the Soom site... I even got little Glot because of how she reminds me of pretty Beryl, my favorite lady!

    19. This is like the sweetest thing ever. :aheartbea If it was a "big mistake", it was a good one! Sometimes you just get a really good vibe from a particular individual doll. I love that.

    20. Yeah it happened to me. I thought Minifees were super lame and overpriced when I first saw them but after my sister got one and I got to play with it I started to really like them. Now I've got a Lishe sp head on the way and am saving up for a body lol.
