Ever come to love a mold you once hated?

Oct 24, 2009

    1. Same thing with me, 4 sisters! At first I didn't understand the love for the Volks girls, I mostly liked more mature looking dolls but now I'm obsessed with them, I must have it! Volks Luna is my favorite but because of the price I'll probably get a four sisters instead.

oh and I wanted to add that it wasn't gradual, one day I just woke up and wanted one o_O

    2. Haha I thought I was the only one, awesome XD I'm now scheming on ways to make money so I can have a 4 sisters asap :D I want to make her long beaded gowns.

    3. I would say hate, but at first, I really didn't like Volks Suiseiseki. Really, what I dislike is the default face-up. It makes the sculpt look so bland in comparison to other face-ups. It took seeing one in real life to really fall in love with the mold!

Unoa Lusis was another one that I didn't like as much but now I absolute love it.

    4. This has happened with almost ALL of the dolls I now own and love!!;)

AiL Chloe!! She was my least favorite of all the Alice in Labyrinth sculpts...but slowly that changed. For that mold, it was gradual, but soon enough, BAM!!! Chloe was my absolute fave AiL sculpt---in fact, I couldn't even THINK about any other sculpt by them, only her, her, HER!!!:D Now I have my lovely Vesper, my very own Chloe, and I love him [yeah, mine ended up as a boy]. >w<

Beryl was my big one though. Never hated her, just...she just wasn't for me, :/ But then my tastes really started to change...POUTY, LIPPY DOLLS, OMG. *___* And then, it's like, I really saw her for the first time. And I ached for her, wanted, wished and saved for her so badly!! Now I have a demon Beryl girl of my very own, and a second Beryl head [to be a human boy] on layaway. ;w; That strong, glaring, pouty face is my favorite sculpt now..!!!:...(:aheartbea:aheartbea

Basically...from when I started the hobby, my tastes went from big-eyed smiling dollies, to narrow-eyed dolls with big, pouty, gorgeous lips. Love 'em!:aheartbea

I agree with many on Volks too. Only used to even *like* one---now I *want* about six!!! xD Mostly Volks girls though...boys, I'm partial to other companies.;)

    5. A good chunk of mine used to be on my "Ugly" list...@_@

My first boy...SDF Dion was released. I much more preferred the Cian to the Dion..thought Dion was hideous. Slowly for some reason..I looked at his page more and more and found myself desiring him more than Cian. Don't know why to this day~

Volks Amakusa~ I though he was another Volks fug, but he was charming in a way. Every time I'd see an Amakusa thread...I'd go look at it..just to see how ugly it was...over time, I think i formed an obsession with them, and bought one later that year. xD

Volks Eden. He was instant "wow...that hopelessly fugly" All it took was one custom Eden I saw~ and I felt I had misjudged him too easily. And after adopting my default Amakusa, I realized more could be done with this boy so he came home too. XDDD

^These three guys actually turned out to be some of my most treasured boys in my collection. Who would have thought something I once hated would be perfect for me?

    6. Hah! I was just talking about this at a doll meet today!

I used to think that Volks MSD Misha/Sinsya/F-12 was hideous. It was mostly the eyes that SEE FOREVER, but the super tiny nose and mouth didn't help much. But I started seeing custom ones. . .girls with gorgeous faceups and eyes that flattered their huge round eyeholes, and all of a sudden this doll was adorable to me!

Of course she didn't grow on me until she was discontinued. Why in the world would I have the sense to want a doll that was a standard? :|

Dybbuk: I never thought Amakusa was ugly. . .just plain and boring. Then I started going back to owner gallery posts too, and now I have a custom one XD.

    7. I completely understand this! I felt exactly the same, wondering how anyone could ever like Notdolls, then BAM, I wanted them too. XD

And this too! I couldn't stand him, hated everything about his face, thought he was horrible, but couldn't stop looking at him. I finally got to see one in person, and it was all over--- I bought one soon after, and he's one of my favorite molds ever.

    8. I'm scheming as well! Another weird thing is that at first I liked dolls in casual clothes and wasn't into all of the frilly lolita since it's everywhere... but now I want it :|

    9. there is none i can think of that i actually hated, and later loved.
but often i might dismiss a mould because i don't like the company pics or owner pics i see so far, and then i see owner pics of someone who is really good at photography, with beautiful lighting and just the right wig and outfits, and i see the doll in a totally new light!
i love to look at the pics of great photographers and often i discover dolls for myself like that and see their potential.

    10. I never liked Dolshe Saint and Soom Sabik. But after a few photos of my friends I changed my mind, they can be really interesting and so alive!

    11. I never liked SOOM Namu in the promo pics! His lips and his nose, his head seemed somewhat too big for the body, too. But when I saw owner pictures with so many different faceups and styles I fell in love. He has been on my wishlist for a while now and everytime I see him it's like "I. WANT. NOW!" I think that he'll be the next one joining my doll family.

    12. yes! can you believe it? i used to hate little fee ante when she was first released. now i am so under her spell she's already ordered and should be coming home anytime now ^_^ well her elf version anyway..
      i can't believe i hated ante ...

    13. I never hated them, but when I first was in the hobby, the SD four sisters head and the MSD Maggie/Sakura head was very common. It seemed like I saw them everywhere and none of them stood out to me.

After I left the hobby for a while, there aren't as many. So now when I see them, I'm glad and it's a wave of nostalgia. : )

    14. Yesh! Soom Dia actually! When I saw her on the site, I first thought she was a boy. But as I looked at the promo pics, whom I thought was a he, was actually a she! Lol. So, everytime I would see that mold, it just looked SO off for me. BUT THEN! I saw someone make Dia into a boy! And I was all like, "WHOA! * A*". They did a really amazing job on him. And me thinking she was a he, paid off. Lol. 'Cause now all I can see Dia as is a boy. And I would love to get him one day! :D

    15. That has happened with me, somewhat. I thought I hated the Dollshe sculpts, until I saw a Hound in person. Not sure I'll ever get one, but I do think they're gorgeous. Also, I hate dolls with open mouths, teeth, and most especially unnaturally placed vampire fangs - and don't like non-natural or white resin on anything bigger than a tiny. And all of a sudden I'm adoring Kalix; in gray. Probably won't ever have one, but he's so beautiful. Also I have a MNF scar Breakaway coming who also has an open mouth and teeth.

The one I thought I really hated that I probably will eventually end up with (probably not soon, but eventually) is Unoa Sist. I really thought I didn't like the Unoa girls' mousy faces, but they've both grown on me a LOT, to the point that I'm hoping next time there's a pre-order for them I have enough money to get a Sist kit. Part of it is the "do it yourself" aspect, but I am really starting to see the potential in their faces.

Volks and Notdoll still haven't grown on me, at all. I have found a couple Volks I don't dislike, but not a single one I'd be willing to save up for at this point. I really WANT one, partly to see what the fuss is about (the ones I've seen in person and handled were nice, beautifully styled and very cute but decidedly unimpressive overall) - but I can't find a face I like. I like their sunlight skintone but hate their mini bodies, and since my main focus is minis... yeah, no Volks for me at this point. Hopefully someday.

    16. There were a lot of molds I didn't like at first....Volks Eden and Alain I didn't like until I saw owner pics, and they're both just lovely. I didn't understand the fuss when Heliot came out, but after seeing photos of him that aren't so heavily photoshopped I've come to like him as well. It took a long time, but four sisters grew on me as well.

Suiseiseki/Souseiseki got me bad. I think maybe at first I was just disappointed because they didn't look enough like the characters for me, but over a long time of seeing owner pics, I liked her more and more. Eventually I HAD to have her, and I am absolutely smitten. <3

    17. When I first got into this hobby almost 3 years ago, I really didn't think SD16 Yukinojo was special. I just didn't like how he looked and his default outfit and wig. I was like "Why would someone buy that?"

Then for some reason, I kept looking and looking and looking at him and he grew on me default outfit and wig and all!

Then a couple months later I bought him from the MP and I was instantly in love. It was pure joy when I opened his box and I saw his sweet smirking face. I kept thanking the sweet girl who sold him to me. He is my first Volks doll and first boy doll.

Now I'm on my 6th Volks doll.

Same thing with my Dollshe SA Husky. I never really thought I'd bring home a scowling, tall and skinny doll at all. Something unsettled me when I looked at his promo pictures at Tensiya when they were still selling him. The pronounced ribs and long and thin limbs didn't appeal to me at the time.

But geez... he just grew on me very quickly and I realized that the scowl was a rather beautiful and regal pout. And the Dollshe Hound body looked so graceful when I think of dressing it in kimonos. So I was hooked!

For many months I obsessed over him and scoured the galleries for SA Husky owner pictures.

Now I'm glad to have him home. He's more beautiful in person and goes really well with my other dolls.

Now I want a Hound.

    18. This happened to me this past weekend actually! I never EVER liked the Juri sculpt until I saw the one's that Effigy was selling. I always thought that upturned smile was really creepy. But when Effigy said he was selling two, I just had to take a look and BAM! The smile wasn't creepy at all, just HAPPY and I immediately claimed him for a character I never thought I'd have in doll form XD Now I can't wait until I have birthday money to spend next month so I can have him home!

    19. Yes, I didn't have interest in hound, too. but he is on my wishlist now, and abadon, actually I disliked him before but I have one now and he becomes my most favorite:lol:

    20. Aha yes. I really hated an OT doll when I first saw it. I now own her and loveeeee her. The more I saw of her, the more I loved her. It's happening with a few on topics too, but most of them are out of price range for me.
