Ever come to love a mold you once hated?

Oct 24, 2009

    1. At first I couldn't understand the appeal of Volks dolls, I didn't think they were that special until like many of you, I saw some with non-default faceups. For example Hinaichigo, I thought she was horrid and then seeing a customized one I now think she is the cutest little thing I would bring her home in a heartbeat. Volks seem to have gotten the message because their newer models have much better faceups.

    2. My daughter fell in love with a Dollmore MoMo at first sight. I didn't think the doll was all that cute, and asked her- that one? are you really sure? But the more I look at her the more I see and I really like her now.

    3. I didn't hate Volks dolls, but I never found one that I would be willing to buy until I finally saw in the DOA gallery, an F-16 girl that I think is very slightly modded. OMG, love at first sight. Now I want one in the worst way.

    4. I never got anything out of Souldoll sculpts. Despite being enamored by their clothes and accesories, I never paid any attention to their dolls, so I was rarely near their site.

Well, one of my friends fell in love with Winy as her dream doll, so I really wanted to see what she loved about this company's style so much to feel that way. After nosying about, I discovered the Soul Little line, and died a little when I discovered Kimmy, a 1/6 scale, very handsome male that's been discontinued in limbo for over a year.

Souldoll rereleased all their Little girls with double-jointed bodies, but never got to do this with Kimmy. They want to rerelease him, but haven't been able to sit down and sculpt him. ;_; I'm happy to know I'm now sitting on their mailing list for his new version, but WHEN that happens... could be tomorrow, could be a few years from now.

    5. I can't say I really hated the sculpts but I was never interested in the more stylised dolls like Peak's Wood, most Customhouse & DES. Then I saw a Choa with an Evenstar face-up & that changed my mind about the stylised dolls. I now have quite a few of them, including the aformentioned Choa & even a tan DES, which is as close to anime as I'll ever get.

    6. Volks dolls, i used to look at them and not be remotely attracted to their sculpts now i really want FCS F16 boy, but only wish that they would offer a suwarikko boy body. although the plain suwarikko body wouldn't be bad ^^

    7. I'm guilty of this too.

For me it was the Puki PongPong. To be honest, the face kind of scared me at first. It was just a little too happy and :D! for me, but then I saw some owner pics with some really dynamic uses of that crazy face and I understood. It's just so silly and now I totally want one. xD

    8. Interestingly enough the sculpts that I now like the MOST were ones which I could not stand the first time I saw them. Mostly this applies to volks dolls but honestly the first time I saw Soom amber I just... couldn't see anything good in her... then a few days later I looked again and fell in love. Likewise with f38, I just hated his sculpt the first time I saw it then my friend showed it to me again a bit later, same faceup and everything, and I fell in absolute love with him!

    9. The first time I saw the dollstown sculpts: Momo, Seola, and Elysia I was looking at the gallery (here on DOA). I thought they looked sad or angry in most of the shots. At first I thought it must be the face up, but came to realize it was the sculpt. Then I began to think they have so much character....Really kinda nice to have so much expression. I wouldn't say I hated them when I first saw them, but I did kind of wonder what the draw was. The more I saw them, the more they didn't look like "anything else" out there.

    10. Dollmore Dahlia, I didn't really want her till they released Black Dahlia. The blonde version didn't really appeal to me, she looked alot like a Western doll, but with the black hair and dark eyes & faceup she's is sooo cute! :D. And Obitsu Gretel, I hated for a long time, but when I realized it was perfect for a character doll I want to make, I started liking it more, and now I'm getting it soon.

    11. Almost every doll I love love love, I once hated and deemed horrible and said I'd never get... Many Volks dolls... Especially the Lucai family ((F16, Lucas, Chris, Sch A)) I really thought were just bad bad bad with their big awkward noses and sharp lips. Then... One day for some reason like you had said... I just saw the appeal and they're now one of my favorite sculpts.

This also happened with all the Dollshe boys as well... I thought they were so ugly/scary and skinny and pale.... Then out of nowhere I just liked them for some reason. It's voodoo magic I tell you!!! D8

Even with Dollfie Dreams.... I thought DDH02 was sooo ugly and annoying looking... then -poof- she's my fav option head... lol It's crazy.

I've learned to never judge a sculpt until I can safely say I don't like it years later... Even then it's unsafe since I really disliked DoD dolls ever since I entered the hobby. Then, my friend really really liked them so I tried and tried to like them but I was still like... "meh..."... then one morning I woke up and was like, "I want a DoI Luke." lol

    12. When I first saw BBB/RS Lu, I thought she looked like a man and didn't care for her. Then, after I noticed her fangs, I liked her better, and now that Maddox is here, I think she's really beautiful and factory pix did not do her justice!

    13. I used to hate the Volks Yo-SD Anne/Piccolo mold but now a year later I really like it and have one on my wishlist. :sweat Sort of like Volks MSD FCS F-16 and F-20, I used to HAAAATE both of them, now I find them really adorable after seeing what some owners have mold with the molds.

    14. When I first got into the hobby I used to rant at length about how I hated Shiwoos. Something about the nose, the muzzle, the huge eyes just turned me right off. Delf, Minifee, all versions of the sculpt just looked goofy and misshapen to me.

...Now, my favorite doll? Is a Shiwoo. :doh

    15. To me (based on the website pics) the Doll-Zone Fenyo sculpt seemed really blah and boring to me, and I was sure there's no way I'd ever add that sculpt to my collection. :eusa_naug

Then I found a poor, lonely little Fenyo head in the marketplace...and with the right face-up, she's actually really cute and serene-looking.

I still think the DZ site Fenyo pics are crappy, though. They don't do the sculpt any justice at all. :|

    16. Several times actually, at first i thought MNF Shushu always looked cross eyed, MNF Marcia looked like she was sucking on a lemon, and souldoll Miryu looked really depressed, peakswood goldie looked really snooty, then wakeup goldie cameout, and i saw owner pics and saw some in person. now i have miryu and marcia and the rest are the very top of my wishlist

    17. I never thought much of Lati Blues until I saw a particular Yern in the sales forum! I ended up being able to buy her. (She isn't even here yet!)

Now I kinda want a Cara!

I also didn't really care for most of Luts' MSDs. I have one of those on the way now, too!

I think I just didn't really fully comprehend that what a certain mold's potential is has a lot to do with the face-up. It really is remarkable how different a mold can look depending on that!

    18. I quite hated Volks Yo-SD Colin when I first saw him...
Some months ago I needed a Yo body for my Leeke-D, and so I bought Colin's body for this - I thought this would be save for me because I'd NEVER would want full Colin (I sometimes have problems when buying bodies for hybrids - most of the time I feel sad and want the original head, so I end up with the full doll anyway...).
And it happened again: the body came with origial box where Colin's picture looks at me everyday - like a sad little kitten, or more like a lonely kid whose parents didn't love :( ......well, in a few days I'll get my Colin's head and reunite him with his body ;) I love this sculpt so much now, can't stop looking at pictures of him!

    19. Pipos doll. I didn't hate their doll but thought kind of gross, like chesire cats.
But now I love the details.
Also Hujoo dolls, I hated them for their alien-like apperance but now they're okay to see. But not lovable.

    20. Notdoll Bleu Citron. At first the thought of a sexed-up child doll irked me but.. now she's the only girl doll that I really want. Ironic, huh? I've really grown to love the shape of her face. Too bad her expression isn't very versatile, it's the only thing stopping me from getting her. Imagine trying to take sad photos of her and she just keeps sticking her tongue out :'D
