1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Face-up on your First doll; Brave Enough?

Aug 7, 2007

?
  1. Yeah, I would do it.

  2. Nah, i'm too nervous.

  3. I would but I think the default or someone else could do better than anything I could think up.

  4. The Default always looks the best anyway.

    1. Already tried. Already failed xD;

    2. I did Kefri's :) I also have an arty background though and through the other hobbies I'm in I also have experience of painting resin horses. Mind doing a human and a doll is Totally different and so was working in pastels, I waited till I could get some MSC, and studied as many pix as I could find, but my best source was the bjd book Oryborytarium that has a great faceup tutorial, largely because I could see the colour palette they were using and how the layers were built up, I did an ok job, I like her but there are things I will change later on.

I have also done a face up for a friends doll, and my third doll's face as well, with another on the way. The second doll (Kryss my latidoll) came with a faceup and it was good to compare my work with a proffessional finish, I can see where I went wrong and fix it next time - hopefully!

    3. At first I planned to get a faceup artist to do my doll for me, but I'm kind of paranoid sending out something that's worth so much to a stranger, especially after reading the bad feedback forum. But the more I looked at the tutorials and the people showing off thier first face-ups I figured I could do it myself. I haven't received my doll yet, but I've been practicing drawing eyebrows and studying tutorials as well as the faceups of the artists here that I really admire, and I plan to get a cheap "practice" head soon. So before I go to town on my El when he comes I hope to have the confidence of practicing before hand. And as others have stated, you could always wash is off and send it to someone else if you fail miserably. But I love the thought of creating "my own" style for my doll.

I say study tutorials go for it and perhaps practice on a test head.

      my 2 cents,

    4. I did ^__^
but then again, I've been painting for years well before my first BJD arrived.

      Sera~

    5. My dollshe saint was my first doll to actually do his face-up. But he didn't have much of a choice since he never had one to begin with. I was also trying to get him to look almost identical to the real Johnny Rotten.

Currently right now I'm in the process of redoing all three of my dolls face-ups. And I'll do my fourth as soon as his head arrives. (Once I finish his mods) I think I would be really nervous though if the doll was limited and came home with it's original default face-up.

    6. I did my first faceup on my first doll. I had no idea how it was going to turn out. I just gathered as much info and advice I could and just plunged right in. I think it wasn't to bad in the end, nothing like what I wanted but close enough. I keep practising and I think I'm not too bad at it now. It takes a while to learn because it's all trial and error. Sadly (as far as I know) there aren't any places you can learn how to do it properly, only online tutorials.

    7. Well for my boy I want the best for him so I'm commisioning someone. He came with the defualt face-up and because I wasn't confident enough to touch it I had to get someone else.
How ever if I got a doll face-upless then yes I would definatly have a shot I'm actually dying to have a go XD.
If it doesn't work out I haven't ruined anything I can wash it and practice ^_^ as long as I follow tips etc nothing really bad should happen....right??? o.O

    8. At first I swore that I'd never ever try doing my own faceups, but now I'm very tempted to give it a try. ^^

I've been in the art field for a while now, though never with paints specifically. I'm still nervous to finally attempt a faceup. They say the best way to get into cold water is to just dive in rather than getting in slowly (or something along those lines,) maybe that can be likened to this situation as well. :3

Whatever you chose to do, good luck! ^_^

    9. Mine is past tense, I was entirely to nervous to do her face-up. That and I loved how Tsuminaki's face-ups look, so I had her do it for me :3nodding:. The doll I have on Layaway is going to come with her default faceup but I actually like it so... maybe the minifee I have after I get her a body. I think she needs freckles all over. ;)

    10. Im way to nervous to even attemp one myself. I have found that when I am nervous my hand shakes so proally I would ruin the face up before I have even done anything major.....meep......

    11. I did my first faceup a few weeks ago on my Sarah (Mallory by Kaye).
I was soooo nervous. But she turned out really well. Now, my 2nd one I didn't like as much, so I am waiting for my MSC, and I will do it again!
      You will do fine!

    12. Pretty cool :3

I did the face-up of my first doll ^__^ I read one or two tutorials, gathered materials, and after work one day went out onto the porch and worked worked worked. It wasn't too hard at all ^.~

    13. Definitely :D I did my first faceups some time ago on my friend's first two dolls (I even gave the other one a ear piercing :,D). I suck XD But I love doing faceups, even though I'm still no good at it. I'm waiting for my first resinmunchkins to arrive, so I can practice some more :3

    14. I was thinking that when I order my first doll that I would get another head to work on.

    15. I wouldn't because I have no artistic ability. I don't want a faceup by myself or an inexperienced artist. These dolls are expensive so I leave the faceups to the skilled artisans!

    16. I ordered Rhiannon with a default DZ face up cause I'm not a painting artist person, I write far better. Only thing I would do on her is her nails cause that is far easier and if I mess up I won't be kicking myself for months >.<

    17. I did my own face up in all my dolls, including the first one. I was too nervous... TT^TT But well, I'm doing it better everytime ^o^

    18. I did!
Since Toby was technically my first doll, I had to do his face up because I had no idea what a face up was! I just thought of it as 'face paint'. :XD:

      Toby in the beginning:

      Toby now:

Just remember, the more you practice, the better you'll get. :)

    19. I'm too nervous to do it (I can't even work on my face, lol) but if you can- why not? :)

    20. I did my Kamari-chan's first faceup. Granted, I removed it the next day and redid it, but still I did do it, lol.
