1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Face-up on your First doll; Brave Enough?

Aug 7, 2007

?
  1. Yeah, I would do it.

  2. Nah, i'm too nervous.

  3. I would but I think the default or someone else could do better than anything I could think up.

  4. The Default always looks the best anyway.

    1. Not even tempted to do it - my first, Sebast, is a semi limited and the face up suits him down to the ground. If down the track it started to come off I would probably redo it, but hopefully that will not be any time soon! :)

    2. No poll option for me, since i dont even have a doll yet XD

I'd be too nervous to be able to do one on my first doll right away. I would love to be able to do them eventually, but i'd like to get some sort of head to practice on. Considering i'm decent at doing human make up, and im decent at drawing if i try, i think i could be decent at faceups too, but...theres something about struggling to get the personality of my first doll right right after i get her. I personally dont like how they look very much without the faceups, either.

While i'd be too nervous to do it right away, i think with practice i'd be ok with it. Like, i know down the road i'll have to redo my dolls faceups either due to wear or because they dont work as well for the character anymore. I'm not saying i'll never do one on my first doll because shes too precious or anything, but that i know when i do faceups on my dolls i'll want them to be good.

Also, since i'm a disgusting perfectionist, i'll want them to be PERFECT. I'll read every tutorial i can, make sure i have more than enough stuff to do it--brushes, sealer, anything else i'll need--and make sure its all good stuff. I'll take forever to do them at first too XD Just to make sure everything is just right. I'm nutty like that, but i think a lot of people are.

--practice first, then sure, i will. Just....not right away. When i have everything i need--physical stuff and metnal stuff XD--then sure, of coruse i will =D

    3. I didn't want to change my first doll's faceup since it's from the company and it was lovely... but alas, it was disintegrating .. so I had to remove and paint one by myself ^^; I only did it after I bought my second doll, though.

    4. I didn't like the face-up on my first doll too much, so I had a try myself. I was using a girl's head (which came with a free face-up) on a boy's body, and the face-up looked way too girly, with lots of lipstick and blush... Especially in daylight, my boy would look pretty "doll-like".
It was quite a bit of a shock to see the blank head after removing the default face-up though. You won't have that when ordering a blank doll anyway.

    5. I knew that if I got a defalt face-up, even if I really liked it, I would eventually remove the face-up to try myself. That's just how I am. So rather than waste the money, I bought supplies and did the face-up myself from the very beginning.

I was really nervous at first, but it helped me bond so much with the doll, and (after a dozen tries) I was very happy with the results.

    6. I've never felt the desire to face-up my personal dolls. I prefer my dolls ready-to-play and pretty out of the box. ^^';

My first doll had a company face-up, and it took me almost 2 years to be able to change it, and when I did he was sent to a very talented customizer. Having my first doll have a company face-up didn't affect my bond with him at all. I'd probably be less attached to him if he had come without a face-up and I did it myself, actually.

But I'm not much of a 'do it yourself' kind of BJD owner. =p

    7. I knew with my first doll I didn't want to mess her up so I commisioned someone for a face up. Even with my second I still didn't want to so luckily Luts does their own. I usually like the companies' face ups anyways except that I am iffy about my new DIM Cordelia's lips. I have seen a few that the default makeup has really pink lips, so maybe I will get up the nerve one day to change the lips alone.

    8. Well I would, but I paint quite a lot so I know I would make an ok job of it...I would only do it if I didnt like the way the default looked though.

    9. I did do my first dolls first face-up, and I was happy with it until my BJD "friends"
told my how bad it "sucked" and redid it for me. after that I lost my confidence and they did most of them until I was ready to try again.
I did my second and third dolls first face-ups and they turned out great.

    10. I plan to do my first dolls face up (when I get her:)). I think it might help with the bonding process a bit, and really art is what I do so personally it'd be good for me anyway.
I'm still worried I'll mess it up though, so I can understand how others, especially people not primarily artists might be concerned too. It should be fun though & luckily can be wiped off if it goes wrong:sweat

    11. I'm a bit of a semi-perfectionist and prefer to have my doll more "finished" from the start so bonding and whatnot can go a little more smoothly without me worrying about not being able to paint a good faceup, so I chose having faceup done by the company on my first boys. It's a little more expensive but I thought it's totally worth it ^^.

    12. Even though I haven't gotten my first doll yet, I would do the face-up. I'm sure my first won't be very good, but I would still feel good about trying. :)

    13. Never in a milion years would i try a face up on my first doll, i was way too nervous! I loved the default E-an faceup so i ordered her with that. I am planning on doing the faceup on my second doll, if i dont chicken out first!

    14. I don't even have my first doll, yet i already feel way to nervous to try a face up on him. I think i'll try, but only after someone show me how to do it ^^

    15. I got my first doll blank, so I kinda had to do her faceup. XD
      I'm pretty happy with it.

    16. I spent seven hours on my boy's face-up, he's a DZ Megi. He didn't look quite right each try, but after all that time and frustration I LOVE how he looks now. And besides(Now this is just me so don't take it personally anyone.) I really dislike the Megi default face-up.

    17. My first doll came with her default face-up. I hated it, she was too pure to innocent so being a complete noob at the time I sent her out for a more goth look.

Fast forward 5 dolls later. I still have the first face-up done by someone else but after that I do them myself. Having some one else do the first helps me adjust to the doll and doing the second on helps me bond with them

    18. I got my first doll as a kit. At the time I had no idea about face-up services. But I'm sure if I had known, I would have done his face-up myself anyway. That was one of the biggest appeals of these dolls for me. The process of assembling him and doing his face-up was a wonderful bonding experience. It wasn't the greatest face-up, but since then I have learned new techniques and have gotten better at it.

I say if you want to do it, GO FOR IT! If you're nervous, there are many many people on DoA who would be more than happy to give advice and tips on how to make a nice face-up that won't damage your doll. It's really just a matter of using the right materials and then practicing! It's really fun and your doll will really feel like s/he is 100% yours.

    19. I just did my very first face-up ever on my first and only doll the night before last night, actually

    20. I did my first faceup on a friends doll!! I have been doing repaints on Barbie dolls for quite a while, and offered to paint her Obitsu Gretel for her. She came out quite nicely.

Then I did my own Obitsu Haruka:

I am going to be painting my Mallory head (Kazekidz dolls) when I get her, I'm getting the blank head. I can't wait!! :fangirl:
