Face-up on your First doll; Brave Enough?

Aug 7, 2007

?
  1. Yeah, I would do it.

  2. Nah, i'm too nervous.

  3. I would but I think the default or someone else could do better than anything I could think up.

  4. The Default always looks the best anyway.

    1. I cheaped out on my first dolls (DoD Too & Bee-A), so my dolls arrived naked and faceless.

So the first thing I had to do was unstring my dolls *_* and the second was paint their faces. :sweat *_* eep.

And while I won't be quitting the day job and become an artiste any time soon, the faces were reasonable enough, and Michel and Ysabea still have their original face-ups. :)

    2. On my first doll? Only if I had to, he's a special case XD
But my other two came blank and I did their face-ups. I wasn't nervous at all though, I'm used to painting small models so it kind of came as a second nature... well, the process was. Most of my models were animalistic, so I still need to work on my technique to make them look a little more natrual. My El is comming with both of his heads blank so after the box opening he's going right to my work table. It's a great bonding experience and gives me a sense of accomplishment.

    3. I voted that I am too nervous, but I also think I would be unhappy with my result and that is part of what makes me afraid to try. I am a great sketcher, but not good at getting lines in the right place the first time!

I have bought all of the materials, and I do wish I had a cheap head I didn't care deeply about to try on. I would like to see if I can do it with practice - I have seen many many people improve dramatically after a couple of tries on the same face. I just don't want to practice it on a Narae or Unoa face!

    4. I think I would be way too nervous. I have ordered default face up on my first BJD, but I do think I would like to try it at some point in the future.

    5. Why not buy an Obitsu head? They aren't very expensive, and although they aren't resin, it is still a good way to practice your technique.

    6. My first doll was a blank (as I call them) and I did the face up> I had never done one before but I figured 'how hard could it be'. If I can put make up on and not wreck my own face, I should be able to do a doll face up.
I am saving for a dark Cocori by Iplehouse so that I can try my luck on her face up. Almost got 1/3 of the money.

    7. Both of my dolls came blank, I didn't have any choice. It took a few tries though, to acheive something I'm really happy with. Their current face-ups, done just last week, are by far the best they've had.

    8. Well I got my first doll "blank" so I had no choice. I sat myself down and started on his face up, really detemnined that I could do it. If I look back the first one it was really crappy :sweat So I redid his face about 8 times and it improved along the way. The last one was really not that bad, but I gave in (read: swallowed my pride) and let somebody else do it for me.

    9. Been there, done that. :) I'm not artistic in the slightest though I did do my first doll's face up. She came in parts . . . with no face-up or face-up option . . . so I didn't really have much of a choice. XD I don't LIKE doing face-ups though, they are a chore to me. But it is worth it and IMHO helps you make your doll feel special to you.

    10. I'm a bit too nervous to try a face up on my first doll. But I am intrigued by it and think that I will get a 60 cm doll head on which to practice. I'm quite a perfectionist so I think that is necessary for me.

    11. I did the faceup on my first (and only) doll. I was a little nervous, and I went slowly and carefully, but I think it turned out lovely and it was a total bonding experience. I could have gotten the default faceup, but I wanted to do it myself as I had a very specific look in mind.:)

    12. Well, when I got Naomi - I really didn't know much about ABJD's so the prospect of giving her a faceup myself was -really- scary. I was so frightened I'd ruin her in some way. Now that I've gotten over the initial 'oh so fragile' stage; I'm feeling brave enough and I'm planning to do my second dolls faceup =D

    13. I'm really nervous about doing it but my poor Seath's faceup is so pale and... well orange.. that it really needs to be fixed up. I wont change all of it *_* but i'd like to darken it a bit more.

    14. I did it.

Soah Nozomi-Cho arrived faceup-less, so I had little choice. Did a lot of research here and elswhere, and two years later, I am still not unhappy with the results.

<-- That's her to the left.

      Good luck, and have fun!

    15. Yes. I'm gonna do face-up for my doll when he arrives, I had no money to pay 30 euros extra . It's gonna take at last 6 hours (even it's the first one) for me because I'm so accurate on everything I do ,especially when I draw :XD:

    16. I wouldn't be too nervous to try it, but if the doll came with a default face-up then I wouldn't remove that. I do think that if I did a face-up myself it would lack subtlety. Everthing I make from food to my drawings and paintings lacks subtlety!

    17. I am getting 2 of the obitsu bjd's, I wanted the first resin BJD of mine to have a face up that I did so I thought it would be best to practice on these lol, then if I find I suck then I can get the default or a custom lol! :)

    18. ...I don't have much of a choice; he's coming home faceless! XDDD!!! but my friend will be there to help me since she does face ups too. so woot. XD!

    19. Well best of luck, you must post pictures :) where are you buying your paints from by the way? :)

    20. Thanks! Uhm, from the bookstore and the craft store. XD; good luck to you too!
