Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. Face-up on your First doll; Brave Enough?

Aug 7, 2007

?
  1. Yeah, I would do it.

  2. Nah, i'm too nervous.

  3. I would but I think the default or someone else could do better than anything I could think up.

  4. The Default always looks the best anyway.

    1. I'm going to try a face up for my first doll, after my MSC gets here. Though I did cheat and bought a small , cheap volks mini head to practice on.;)

    2. I'll do it myself, without a doubt. I would have gotten a default face up, if it hadn't been for the fact that the face up they have of my DZ Mo (the one I'm ordering) at Junkyspot is all purplish and the character I have in mind for my Mo shall be having a pale, a bit sickly looking, blue blush. So I'll just have to do it myself. Being an art graduate I should at least know the basic about how the paints and chalk react, though I have never tried them out on resin before. Shall be an interesting experience ^^

    3. I've got my first boy arriveing soon and I will be doing his faceup
but it's a personal thing I think... I could never be satisfied with a default faceup I know I will inevitably modify the poor thing beyond all reconition eventually...
so why not start the way I mean to continue.
I wouldn't love my doll as much if I didn't do his face
and I can allways clean it off and start again!
      I imagine he will demand seasonal faceup anyway ^.^;
doing the faceup is half of the excitement for me of getting him.
      excited ^.^

    4. i did do a face up on the first head i got.... it was an obitsu gretel.
i'm fairly-artistically talented, but it turned out to be a nightmare :doh (this was last march..) i hated the face-up so much that i just abandoned the doll :(

i took the face-up off a few weeks ago and i like the head a lot more.

...but i cant see myself doing any more faceups for a long while :sweat factory default or commissions from now on! :)

    5. Im ganna my first doll tis going to be two blank heads
but lucky me will have a juri head to practice diffrent
      things on :B

    6. No way. I'm fairly artistic, but I just would be way too nervous. Besides, I love the default face- up of the doll I'm saving for ^.^

    7. I think I've pretty much decided in full now that I want to do all my face-ups myself. x3 Sometimes I get really nervous since I know they won't be pretty or perfect to start out with, but seeing how people improve here is just inspiring. :D Also, I'm way too picky and particular about what type of 'look' I want my boys to have to allow someone else to do it, no matter how good they are. They don't know my boys like I do, don't understand them like I do, and even if they gave them an amazing face-up, I just think, for me, it would fall a little flat. They wouldn't have that spark to them of the artist truly knowing who they are.

I've seen it stated many times that one reason people like to comission is because it's fun to see another artist's vision of your doll. Well, that's all well and good for some people, but for me, I want my vision on my doll. xD

    8. I voted "yeah I would do it".
Within a few days I am going to order my first doll and I want to do the face-up by myself. The reason is because I want to give it a personal style and I believe it also adds to the bonding process.

I hope it will turn out good. My hands aren't shaky as I always do eyeliner on my own face for a couple of years now, so I hope that's going to be helpful. And even if I screw up, I would try it again untill I am satisfied. :)

    9. Yes! :D

But I practice on Bobhead so I'm not TOO nervous. Though I need to get more faceup materials soon D: But since I like to be SUPA hands on, I'd rather have my own semi-crappy faceup on that at least portrays the character as best as I can make it than a professional faceup that's pretty but doesn't show the characters personality as well as I'd like.

Of course, I plan to do all SORTS of very scary things to my doll as soon as I get him, like sanding, sueding, re-stringing and wiring, so maybe I'm just really adventourous? Or crazy? XD

    10. I ordered the standard face-up, but mostly just because of the holiday special AOD is holding right now. That, and I'd rather he not arrive without his face on!

I'm most likely going to do a custom face-up a few months after he arrives, though. For the personality I have in mind, it'll have to be much darker than what they'll be sending, I'm sure.

    11. I'm not all that nervous about doing face-up. I'm confident in my artistic ability ^^ (rather vain too XD)

But in the end I decided to pay for the face-up anyway just for the sake of him having something on his face when he arrives. I've seen peopls dolls arrive without face-up and its quite offputting.

On the other hand I ordered face-up supplies from ebay and I'm gonna be painting Robbie (DZ bunny) myself. And one I get good at it I'll wipe off Lucifers and do that myself aswell since I don't like default. ^^

    12. Freaked out. Keep thinking to myself, what happened if i use the wrong things and her face melts off!!!

After a few days my Estella arrived, her lip rubbed off, so i "hit" the tutorial forum, day and night , and bought all the materials and repainted her lips. Only her lips tho.. hehe

    13. My first doll I got the default face-up because I loved him that way and all the dolls I plan on getting aside from a far in the future one I decided on the default. I imagine though that one day I will try, but I know I'm going to fail big time and hate it. Loric's lips are already fading away so I'm going to have to refresh them and I'm dreading the day that I finally get tried of them. x.x

I think I'll either just buy the face-up from the git-go or commission someone to do it.

    14. I thought about face-uping my first doll, but I'm not confident enough after I started thinking about it... -_- I paint okay (that is... if I tape off everything so it is virtually impossible to paint out-of-the-lines!!), but thinking about the paint-job I do on my sculptures and my inability to do detail, I think I'm going to have company default for my first doll and buy a practice head at a later date (I keep plotting to have tanned dolls, so I don't want to like spray him with so much Mr. Super Clear re-tries that his skin turns pale! haha...). I seriously cannot stand looking at no face-up dolls for a long time. I have an irrational fear of faces with no eyebrows! xD Seriously, this one chick at school has thin blonde eyebrows and a tan so I totally can't see her eyebrows and I'm convinced she is Satanically evil with no other supporting evidence...

    15. I loved the default, but at the same time, I wanted to give my girl some originality, so I ordered her without faceup. I did my very first faceup on her. Personally, I think I could have done better, and I'm having a friend help me out when I redo her face and body. She said that it was really good for a first-time faceup.

I was SO afraid to try it. I was afraid of making my doll look terrible or different from what I wanted her to look like. Good thing for trial-and-error, eh? ^^

    16. I'll be giving it a try. If I turn out to be completely rubbish at it, like, no-amount-of-practice-on-my-part-will-make-you-not-look-like-a-monster, then I can hand him over to my sister, who's had some practice and is looking for more. She's got a knack with face ups for a beginner which I hope runs in the family... *g*

      =^__^=

    17. Would love to do it. I'm not worried that it would'nt be good enough, although I'm sure I would need lot's of practice. I just have no idea what materials to use and where to get them?

    18. Oh that's a good tip, I must remember that one!

I jumped in there with mine. The first attempt didn't last very long but it was passable. The second is better but even that probably won't last because I've found I enjoy doing them so much! It's one of the things I'm most looking forward to when my second doll arrives (hopefully tomorrow!). I think if I didn't work on my doll I wouldnt feel it was truly mine.
And like everyone else says it's not like a faceup is permanant so mistakes aren't really worth worrying about. ^_^

    19. the default is definitely better ,i dont want to destry such a precious treasure

    20. Forget doing faceups myself; I can't even think of what to ask for in a custom faceup! How do you decide what you want a faceup to look like? I don't associate certain lip colors, for instance, with certain personality traits, so exactly how a character translates into a faceup has always baffled me. Not that I have any characters to begin with. :sweat Default for me all the way!
