Favorite display options?

Dec 22, 2022

    1. Hi y'all!

I'm going to be moving out of my family home for college soon, and as requested by my parents, I'm making a wish list of items I want for my condo. One of the most important things I want is a good doll display- preferably, able to fit at least 4 70+ cm dolls. If possible, on Amazon. Does anyone have any suggestions on their favorite display cases to use for BJDs? I feel like so many displays are too small for them, so I thought I'd ask here.

    2. I don’t know amazon options, do you have access to any IKEA?
I’ve bought some “Billy” shelves, there are not very big, but it has glass doors and I can fit 4 dolls inside and some simple decoration.

Sorry for the low quality pic…
There is a 1 door and a 2 doors options. White brown and black.

    3. I do currently have a Billy where I keep my dolls, but I was wondering if there were any other options so I could make this place contrast to my room at home! I'll probably end up with a Billy in the end, as it's worked well for my dolls so far.

    4. Moving out for the first time is so exciting :loveI didn't bring my dolls with me to college, so I'm not sure I'm much help. One thing I'd be concerned about is space. By condo do you mean an actual condo or is this more of a larger student housing situation? Are you going to have roommates? They might have an issue with large pieces of furniture. You'll also want to consider the window situation, because you probably won't want your dolls to yellow from the placement of the display case. Also, you probably want something that can go up and come down easily, so I second IKEA furniture.

Is horizontal storage completely out of the question? You might be able to place them in a nice trunk instead. It's portable (so you can bring your dolls home during breaks), keeps your dolls away from light (or nosy roommates if that might be an issue), and it doubles as seating for small spaces.

I would be a little hesitant to purchase anything that needs to hold up heavy dolls on Amazon, as there have been increasing quality issues over the years. Good luck!

    5. Billy are always the best XD, well other option, is to buy some cheap “industrial like” shelves, those that are totally height modular for garages and storerooms. Since there are bigger too you can have a 100x70 surface easily.
Then buy some wood panels and close it.
Ive seen very nice spaces with that. But takes more effort.

    6. Thank you! Yep, it'll be a personal condo off campus. I will have a roommate, but separate rooms, and my dolls will stay in my own room. The trunk idea could actually be cute- some sort of ottoman that could be used as storage on the interior, and dolls displayed on the top. Luckily, the college I'm going to is only about 30-40 minutes drive away from my family home, so bringing them home wouldn't be too hard. Ikea definitely seems like the best bet, so I think I'll be looking more there! I may end up with more Billy shelves, just because most other displays aren't wide enough to showcase multiple dolls.

    7. That's a good point! Industrial shelves would be pretty strong too, which is an obvious plus, but you're right about it being more complex to assemble than just a typical shelving unit.

    8. this is my current doll cabinet shelves using Ikea PAX and 2 additional KOMPLEMENT shelves and glass TYSSEDAL doors to keep out dust and keep them safer from visitors. I installed LED light bars from amazon myself. It's a bit more expensive than BILLY, but definitely more spacious. It def is pretty tall, so i keep a step ladder on the side to access my top level dolls.

I did also try out large storage shelves which is like the "industrial" shelves previously mentioned for garages. This is Ikea Bror. more expensive than BILLY, but cheaper than PAX. I like the depth of the shelves more than BILLY's. It's the simplest to assemble and disassemble and lightest in weight, but def the least "pretty" of shelves.

This is what BILLY was like. i didn't have any OXBERG doors on them. considerably shallower than the PAX. I ended up returning this in exchange for BROR due to the fact i wanted a deeper shelf to accommodate my mermaids better.

And this is the Ikea DETOLF, the smallest, but fully glass display case. the boy is 65cm tall, the mermaid standing on her tail is 70+cm. I didn't get a whole pic of the display case, but for 1/3+ size, it can only accommodate 2 levels. I had the mermaid on the top level and the boy on the bottom. ( you can see her tail peeking at the top of the pic of the boy)

    9. I currently have an ikea Billy (the version with two doors) which works pretty well. I also considered this shelf from amazon as well as this case and similar ones (which seem to come and go with if they're in stock or not). I don't know how many dolls I'll end up with, but if I need more storage in the future, I'll probably go with something like the second one I shared, simply because getting to an ikea to get another billy or a regissor or something is quite a hassle where I live and if I ordered them to be shipped, they'd be far too expensive.

    10. Word of caution about the Detolf: if you screw the doors on too tight or put a heavy load on too many of the shelves they have been known to shatter from the pressure. This is fairly easy to avoid (work on carpet, don’t press too hard on the panels when you slide them in place) but it’s something to keep in mind during assembly

    11. Oh, those look great!I hadn't seen the Pax before, that may be one of my top contenders! I do like the Detolf, but the combination of shortness and only really holding one doll per level put me off of them for dolls. I'll probably be using them for other displays instead. And of course, as @soulsoaker mentioned in his comment, there's the concern of them shattering- part of why I've stayed away from them for my figure collection this long.

Those Amazon cases are also very nice! I particularly like the second one, which looks pretty classy. Decisions, decisions... I have an Ikea not terribly inconvenient from where I live, but the primary reason I was looking for Amazon was because my family asked for me to make an Amazon wishlist as to help my less tech-savvy relatives know what to get. As of now, I think it'll be between Billy and Pax for doll storage.

    12. Also fyi: Pax is very large so it's good to know how big your ceiling and walls are if they can accommodate it.

    13. Mine's a larger scale than you (currently) need but I likeTeddy the IKEA Hemnes cabinet:

    14. That looks very nice too! I like that it has the big display space, so that's definitely a good contender as well.

    15. Wow, I never thought about using Pax as doll storage. Thanks for the pics, @bahboh!

We use the tall Hemnes at our house for most of our dolls. It’s very similar to the Billy but a little bit deeper and made of stronger wood than straight up particleboard because I’m paranoid after the first super cheap shelf I bought for dolls back when I was only going to have a few (ha!) actually fell apart on us. :o

The top shelf will accommodate 70+ dolls (I have Ringdoll’s Hua Cheng who is 77cm, and he would fit comfortably there if he wasn’t chilling with his dianxia in another spot), but the narrow middle shelf is mandatory to hold the whole unit together and takes up some of the headroom on the bottom shelf. Bottom shelf is max 65cm, so you can kind of squeeze up to an SD17 on there as long as they’re not wearing crazy heels or big hair (you can see my SD17 sized dolls up top for that reason, haha).

    16. Your display looks great as well! Aah, it's so intimidating seeing all of these beautiful collections! Good to know that Hua Cheng would fit there too- he's my biggest doll (well, when he actually arrives... 190 days and counting), so that would work well. And I really like that you use the middle shelf for Nendoroid Dolls- that's a wonderful idea, and actually puts the Hemnes a little higher on my ranking since I'll also need a home for my Nendoroid Dolls! So many decisions, I guess it'll just come down to what my Ikea has in stock in the right colors when the day for buying furniture comes.

    17. Pax is still particle board so if you don't like that material, I couldn't recommend it to you.
Also didn't realize it was for only 4 dolls. If it's just 4 dolls, some of the smaller cabinets others have recommended are probably better

    18. If you're interested in the hemnes, you should know that they discontinued the version with doors :/ I initially bought one planning to work out a fix for that, but never had the time/ materials to do so. It *is* a very nice shelf though, and i like that it has adjustable feet, so if doors aren't a deal breaker for you it's a good option!

    19. That's too bad! Hmm... I wonder if I could jerryrig something up. Though I'd probably be in the same situation of not having the time or materials ^^; Maybe I'll look for something similar, or just end up with another shelf. Oh, well!

    20. The shelves (it comes with two) are adjustable, but to fit 1/3 sized dolls, standing, I had to drill four extra holes to allow the one shelf I used to be set low enough. Took about ten extra minutes while I was assembling the flatpack.
