Figuring out what doll size suits you.

Jan 15, 2012

    1. Junkyspot! :doh

you are a genius. I've been on that site so much, how'd i miss them? Thank you. :D

    2. When you started this hobby and found a doll you liked, how did you figure out what size doll you liked?
The first few dolls I bought were SD sized. Like others have said they had the largest variety at the time & were easy to shop for. I also reallly liked the idea that they were so much larger than 'regular' dolls.

And, have you ever found a doll you wanted when you first joined the hobby then suddenly said, "You know... I want another doll size."
I used to have a rule for myself. I was only allowed to buy dolls that could fit into the existing storyline. It was a good way of managing my spending, otherwise I would have been tempted to buy any doll with a pretty face ;) It narrowed my options as I was limited to dolls that would fit with the scale & style of my existing dolls.
I sort of threw that out the window when a Unoa preorder came up and I actually had the cash available to buy them! I'd always loved Unoa and they used to be so hard to find! I jumped at the chance and justified it by creating a whole other storyline for the girls ;) I've ended up loving the size!

If so, did you kind of regret it after you got a different doll because of it's size and not just how really cute it was to you?
Now days I have dolls in a range off different sizes! I think they've all got their pros & cons. I've got 4 SD, 2 Mature minis & 2 Yo-SD sized dolls at home. I've also got some more mini's and my first two super big dolls on order! I'm a little nervous about 70cm but I'm sure I'll end up loving that size just as much ;)

    3. I didn't have rules before starting, I wanted pretty much every size I used to know (meaning from 16cm to 80!) but most of all I really wanted a realpuki....but I didn't know how tall they were!! I saw them in owner pics and I thought they were like 20cm.. when I discovered the real size I was very upset and I didn't want one anymore, too expensive for such a small thing, too tiny for playing with it and making clothes.. anyway I couldn't remove Soso face from my mind and my heart; I finally got him (and other 4 :P) and I can't be more satisfied :)

About the bigger sizes, now I have more clear ideas and I won't go over MSDs! I like SDs as sculpts and bodies (and also bigger like Lusion Doll girls) but they don't fit in my family plans (if MSDs are adult, what SDs could be??) plus those I like are expensive and I don't have room for them >.<

    4. My first doll was a SoulKid msd sized doll.... she was a good transition from the larger fashion dolls I (used to) collect. Then I was thinking about some YoSD sized kids after seeing an absolutely adorable Yo at a meetup... but I caved for a similar sized LittleFee instead. LOVE. So ended up with a couple of them. Moving on I've been really wanting to try out the larger dolls. Eyeing the Iplehouse SID/EID/nYID's forever but then caved for a Fairyland big girl the Feeple65 which I'm now waiting for. I do find I go for the more realistic dolls vs the anime type sculpts. So I don't have as many dolls as others but for me I like having a variety so I don't feel so "bored", I think that is what makes this hobby fun. The variety of styles with dolls and looks and sizes. Eventually I'll build up my collection of dolls and the variety of them. But I try to limit to one a year so I can still pay the bills. But this is why I like the dolls that have face-plate options as I feel it's easier to get more face-plates and make it feel like I have more dolls.

    5. When I first found out about bjds from a friend, I tried out the size she got, which is 1/4. I think I've always admired the larger dolls (I'm the type of person who feels nervous holding small things because I'm afraid I'll crush them or something) but I don't like the adult look a lot of 60-70cm dolls have. I think even though I have a hard time with little dolls, I'd like just one 1/6 size someday though, they're just adorable.

    6. Well, at first I thought I really liked SDs and the first doll I got was one. He was way bigger than I had really thought, I still loved him though and I got another SD girl too, but for some reason a few months later I bought an MSD and I liked her size a lot better. I sort of wish I had went and asked one of my friends with dolls to show me what the sizes were really like, seeing size comparisons on the internet is one thing but its just so much better to see it in real life to really decide what you like. Anyway I still love my two original SDs but I've taken quite a liking to the MSD size now!

    7. Up until now, I only used to have MSD dolls (and one YoSD), because thaat is the size I like the most. Right when I bought my first doll, Narae, I knew this was the size best for me. It seems to be the truth even now, years later: I'm very uncomfortable with my Soom Chrom, because he's so huge and bulky. First choice was best choice for me, it seems :)

    8. When I received my second girl who is MSD sized, I decided she was perfect and that it was the size for me. But I guess I do sort of regret it, now that I find myself really wanting a boy it's so hard for me to find one I really love in that size, and I kind of wish i would have gone with larger dolls, even though i really love the MSD size...but I don't see myself trying to re-shell my doll family, because I love my girls so much. I'm just going to have to keep searching for the perfect guy :)

    9. Ammifina have you checked out Resinsoul/Bobobie or Magical Angel? They got some really cute MSD boys. ^^ I just love my RS Song.

XD;; For me MSD's were on the cheaper side of the scale and not too huge that I'd have trouble carrying them around. I held at a meet a doll family SD and it was so heavy like holding a small child. I like my dolls on the lighter end of the spectrum.

    10. Arashi Uchiha, I really wish I liked the Resinsoul/Bobobie boys, but I have a particular character in mind and none of them seem to fit the bill. I do have my eye on one of the girls though... It's so frustrating because I can almost always find a girl that suits me. Thanks for trying to help!

    11. I had a hard time knowing what I wanted in this hobby; I knew I didn't like tinies because of my experience with my friends dolls, and when I first started, SDs just seemed too big for me. So MSDs seemed best! Weren't too too tiny and were way too big. It wasn't until later that I figured out that I was an SD kind of girl, but I needed to stretch out and experiment to figure that out.
I think the only way to discover what size you like best is to just be adventurous and try out different dolls. Yeah you may not like it, but that's what the market place is for. A collection can be a variety of sizes, not just SDs or MSDs -though it can be that way too.

    12. I started out with all SD sized dolls but they take up a lot of space not only the doll, but their boxes and other stuff. I started buying MSD sized dolls and I like them too. I have had only one YOSD sized bjd and I ended up selling her. The tiny dolls are just not my favorite. That might change over time, but if I had the space I would have lots and lots more SD and MSD sized dolls everywhere.

    13. I started out totally convinced SD was the size for me and my MSD sized dolls would be the children and once I had enough money I would have SD sized adults.

Now the big boy and girl are in a box in my cupboard, the smaller ones (which I still play with) have been repurposed into adult versions of themselves and my wishlist is full of minis. Maybe SD size is just difficult for me to manage because I am quite little. When I held them at meets they seemed fine, but hauling them around all the time and trying to pose them and such I just did not enjoy. :C

    14. I knew from the first that I wanted SD size dolls. I'd seen several in person & liked the look & feel of them. Besides, I've always been attracted to larger dolls. I did eventually buy some MSDs but ended up selling all of them though I did get back into the mature minis especially if they were elves or fantasy creatures. I even bought some tinies but have only kept a select few.

Now I can't afford anything larger than an MSD & I don't have room for anymore SDs anyhow. I've never gone bigger as I didn't want to have to get new shoes & clothes to fit that size. So SDs still remain my love. They're easy to sew for, have mature faces & bodies & I have a lot of furniture held over from another doll collection that fits them perfectly.

    15. My first doll was a MSD. but after a year i decided i wanted an SD, i fell in love with the SD size so much more! i now have no MSDs and 4 SDs xD I like SDs for the more detail~

    16. I like all sizes and am open to each of them! I have SD, MSD, and tiny size and each are wonderful in their own way. In my opinion, it's all about the sculpt and not so much the size. :) I do like bringing the tinies around on travels best though as they're so portable-friendly with their small size.

    17. Love SDs and SD+ dolls, love the heft of them, and the sheer amount of detailing you can get, and the range of heights available so you can have the kind of variations that humans have! I've got 1 very short SD at 50cm, and one extremely tall at "80cm" (closer to 76cm really) I'm planning to get a couple of MSDs eventually - though these will be child characters

    18. It's hard to say. My first was a Dollfie Dream, and she's about perfect in terms of size, I'd say. Not too small, not too big, so she's easy to carry around and fun to play with. My EID boy is only slightly larger, but it makes a huge difference!! haha :) Depends on what you're used to, I guess?

    19. My first was a Delf El, and I still own him. My second was a Cutie Delf. Still have him too. Most of my crew now happens to be the Sd sized and the tinies...I have like 7 or 8 MSDs...

    20. I prefer MSDs in my opinion, it just reminds me of the three little bears. The SD is too big of me, the YoSD is too small, and the MSD is just right for me. And it's easier for me to sew clothes for her than a YoSD
