Figuring out what doll size suits you.

Jan 15, 2012

    1. I love DOLLS - all sizes = so I separate them by size - small ones on a shelf, larger in chairs and largest on the floor. Works fine for me..

    2. When I first ordered my first doll and just had a feeling that I wanted an SD. Mind you I had no clue they were roughly two feet tall and weighed probably at least 3 lbs.But somehow I knew. And that size is perfect for me. The only size that I'm worried I may not like is YOSD which sucks because I have a good amount of them on my wishlist. But hopefully I can attend a good meetup and meet some nice ones there.

I guess sometimes you just know in my case, and I know I can't speak for others though. I hope that I never have to sell a doll because it was to large/small.

    3. My husband has the mind set ''SD only... I don't like smaller dolls after have an SD. I love how well proportioned they are and they look so much more real. The others would just seem to small and more like barbie dolls''

My mind set is ''I love SD size for the proportions, but I got an msd head free with my SD... so she's getting a younger sister!'' lol :)

I know they're not ''bjd'' per say, but I have 10 LPS petite blythes as well... I love them even though they are small, and I like having the collection all together on display, but they just aren't as photogenic, posable, and fun as my SD. So we both stick to 1/3 size.

Still, when I get a body for my 1/4 head there's always the possibility that we'll think a bit differently?

    4. I like the 60cm doll size (my current boy is 57cm). For my current living situation, they're easiest to keep safe and to produce clothing for.

      That said, I am an ambitious and creative person. My doll goals for 2012 include bringing two characters to life in doll form. After conferring with the friend who helped with creating these characters, the sculpts that were decided upon ended up being huge! (at least by my standards) One is going to be 62cm and the other is going to be 65cm. And they're both ladies. They're going to dwarf my current boy and I have no idea where I'll put them once I've got them. ;o;

But when I'm going for something specific, like a specific face or a specific proportion, or a very specific skin tone? I'll take it in whatever size I can find it in, honestly.

    5. I went to a lot of meetups. Nothing beats hands-on experience! :3nodding:
I was pretty set on having a Puki as my first BJD, even thought I orginally started looking at MSDs. I've always loved small, tiny, cute things! And the smaller and cuter the better!
Yo-Sds are my favourite size (followed closely by MSDs)~:aheartbea Simple enough to sew (or buy) clothing for, easy to transport, loads of fun, and super cute! My smallest doll is 5.5cm (Off Topic Lรฉgend de Temps Puzzelf) and my biggest is a JuniorDelf Hybrid, who's about 56cm with his boots on. (But of all my dolls, he'd have to be my very most favourite, purely for the all work I've put into him!) I've got a good variation of different shapes as well as sizes!
I personally find anything bigger than 60cm unwieldy and awkward, being a person of smaller stature. I find them hard to dress and pose, and they just don't appeal to me very much. Not to say I don't like them, I just have no desire to own one. Space is always an issue too! (not just for the dolls, but all their stuff too!)
Bigger is not always better in this hobby for some people! :)

    6. I fell in love with two SD girls when I first found the hobby. However, I decided to buy a MSD instead (which I also loved) just to try it out and see if it was something for me. When I got her, I instantly felt that she was soooo tiny!

So, now Im waiting for my second doll, who is one of the two SDs I fell in love with. I still like my current girl, but I don't know how it will work out when the SD gets here.
I feel like MSD is a really tricky size. When I got mine she was supposed to be an adult, but that's not possible when I get one that is 10+ cm taller than her.. And I don't want her to be a kid.

Although I don't think I would have a problem with YOSD size dolls, since they're obviousley kids.
I'll just have to see how things work out, but Im finding the MSD size really hard to handle.

    7. My first doll was 72cm, second 42cm, and lastly, 57cm.
I think the only way to learn which size is right for you, is to just handle/care/photograph etc with each size and make up your decision then.

It was only in buying all different sizes that I learned that SD17s are a little too big, and my perfect size is somewhere between SD and MSD, haha. I ended up selling the first doll, and I ended up being put off BJDs for a while because I thought I just wasn't into it, but after a break I got back into the with a MSD and realized that I had no problem with dolls, but the size.

Do I regret buying the doll? Not at all. It just made me find that comfortable size.

    8. *_*All the sizes.... aaaaaaallllllll the sizes. :o

    9. It's been interesting reading everyone's responses! I'd seen the dolls in Sumika for years and had an idea of regular SD size, but they just seemed too big and space consuming so I got an MSD size first. A year later into collecting I think I like msd and yosd sizes equally. Both are easy to sew for and readily portable, especially yosd. I have four SD size dolls, and while I love them I find their size a little unwieldy and difficult to work with. It's not so much the posing--my Raurencio Stella is amazing--just that I'm still hand sewing everything and making them an outfit would take forever. The outfits you can buy for them tend to be much more expensive (at least for the companies I like to buy from), and they take up tons of space in my small Japanese apartment. Also I love taking outdoor photos, and it's such a hassle to carry a big doll. I'm certainly not against having more SD size dolls if they catch my eye, but definitely I prefer smaller dolls.

    10. As soon as I found out about the hobby I felt most drawn to SD sized dolls. After acquiring my first two I contemplated getting a MSD but I like the fact that all of the clothes, wigs and shoes can be shared between the dolls that I have. I'll probably only ever have SD dolls. Although I might buy a tiny at some point.

    11. there are no meetups anywhere near where i lived so i couldn't see before buying. that said my first 2 dolls were sd's. once i got into it more i found that i liked taking my dolls out for photo shoots and it was easier to cart along smaller dolls. also the msd dols i fell for had mature figures and didn't work with the sd's but do work with my tinies. so i mostly get msd and smaller now. space is also a factor, but someday i'd like to get a few more sd's. come to think of it price also factored in. i can get more of my wishlist dolls if i buy the smaller ones since they are usually cheaper than the larger dolls from the same company ;)

    12. Personally I have no issues with any size of doll. For one, I know I just love the larger dolls but even so the first BJD that honestly captivated me and which I brought home was an MSD, as was my second. Right now I'm waiting for a 70cm giant and a tiny yo-SD at the same time xD and am saving for an SD -the way I'm going I'll have dolls of every size in existence soon enough~ :XD:

    13. When I first started to seriously look for a doll to purchase I thought I would never buy an SD. They were more expensive and since I'm only 4'9 they're about half my height so I thought it might be awkward. So instead I got an MSD. Then I fell in love with the Cinderella sculpt from Angel studio and well she's SD so.... Now I have 1 pukifee a MSD and 2 SD. I don't think I'll ever get anything smaller than a pukifee but other than that I'm pretty fond of all sizes.

    14. I have one doll that's 14cm. That's very little! But it's the size I like best, because I feel like a SD size one would be too awkward to carry and dress. And I like dressing and posing my dolls (playing with them ^_^) a lot. It would take a lot of space and feel strange to me.
So really tiny it is. Plus I want all my dolls to match in size. (except maybe a pukipuki to be a little sibling?)

    15. I'm very controversial in the question of my favorite doll sizes as my biggest doll is 70 cm and the smallest is only 9 cm)) First I considered only SD and SSD to be my cup of tea, but then I bought a tiny doll, then another...then I fell in love with a msd boy... So, to me it's not a question of size, it's a question about the doll being really *mine* or not:)

    16. I initially only wanted MSD sized dolls because SD size just seems so big to me. The problem with that is that I fell in love with Volks Tae and Megu and there's no head mold out there like them that is MSD sized so I might just have to step out of my box.

    17. After my first month of working I am getting my wage and can afford a doll! So I researched and decided a MSD is in my price range even though I'm aiming for an SD. And after about a few seconds of researching I found a doll >.< and I love her just looking at her. No matter how many times I search for other dolls, I still want her. Even after looking at SD's, I do want an SD but I can't afford it yet and I'm still not certain on which sculpt I love.
So anyway ha! :) The point is I didn't think I would get an MSD first but after falling in love with one I have no choice ^^ I'm excited!

    18. I have all sizes and I must say atm I'm totally in love with SDs! The big 70cm are my favorites now.
They are easier to sew for and I love to pose them!
The only size I personaly dont like is yosd, I dont know why they are not for me!
I love the super tiny RealPukis thou! ;)

    19. Seeing as I was going from baby dolls to BJD I opted my first ones to be SD. I figured since all BJD have basically the same number of joints ( This was about 5 Years ago now ) just a matter of the torso weather it was 1, 2 or even 3 parts. I was figuring this way a space between each joint would give my fingers space to move each limb or the head and body into almost human poses. Key word almost. Fact is except for a couple of dolls I have never been able to twist a waist or to be smooth and not pop out of place.

I have been able to handle size, not weight so I found I prefer the Dollshe boys over EID or even SID boys. I like small but no smaller then say 15cm. Even then they have to be able to pose easy & hold it. For me #1 is pose ability as I am a very big control freak and if my dolls can't pose then I don't bond. I have been lately loving faces and finding ideal bodies that will work better. Not a cheap way to go many times. Perfect bodies seldom are cheap or if cheap not in USA. In any case it takes time to find what size works as well as what the feel is in doll that is right. I admire many, many dolls, but would not own them if you paid me.

    20. i figured i liked big bolls as i want be afraid to hold them, i have small hands and i rather hold onto something bigger than something smaller, i am more likley to drop sometheing like a minifee . i love bjd 60cm and over

i have 2 45 ish dolls and i know for defanit i want to go bigger, i want the larges size doll i can get
