Figuring out what doll size suits you.

Jan 15, 2012

    1. When I first got into BJDs, I had no idea what size I would prefer. I ordered an SD first, and I also picked up a tiny (15cm). I liked the tiny while he was the only doll here. Once my SD arrived, the tiny was soon forgotten. I got a few MSDs so I could have dolls that were... more portable. I have just gotten my first 70cm doll, and I have come to understand that the big dolls are where it's at for me. I'm selling all my MSDs now, as a matter of fact.

Strangely enough, I have a yosd and I love him. I think it's because yosds are proportioned/scaled so that they look like children to the SDs. MSDs make the SDs look like giants. I really dislike that they don't look like older kids/younger teens in comparison to SDs.

    2. I like the tinies; sometimes I think there should be a sub-category 'teenies' since all my dolls (just 9 months ago it was only ONE doll!) are pukipukis, all of 11 cm tall. They're easy to stash, cart around, hide, fit into spaces for photo shoots, and I can make them clothes out of the smallest scraps of fabric.

I am eyeing the Little Fees...

    3. I really thought about the issue a lot before committing to my first doll. I think all the sizes have their advantages, but MSD seemed right for me, and I decided to limit my collection to that size, so that the dolls could share wigs and clothes. I do admit to occasionally sneaking a peak at SDs and Tinies, but then I think about the ancillary costs, and stick with the MSD.

    4. My first doll DC El I feel is too big for me. I cant find another doll with a face as I love as much as his, sigh! (Mini fee El looks very different to me) I fall in love with faces.

    5. When you started this hobby and found a doll you liked, how did you figure out what size doll you liked?

I didn't figure it out. I think one cannot normally say 'I don't like this size' as far as MSD/YOSD/SD is concerned. I think one has to try it out. It's trial and error and sometimes, likings change halfway.

Have you ever found a doll you wanted when you first joined the hobby then suddenly said, "You know... I want another doll size."

Now I do. I only like dolls from 65~70cm, so if I like a smaller one, I don't buy it. I know it's not gonna work. I've tried it before with negative results.

If so, did you kind of regret it after you got a different doll because of it's size and not just how really cute it was to you?

I never bought a doll just for the size, if I bought it it was BOTH for the size and how much I liked it.

    6. Sometimes you have to find out the hard way, really. I've met people who love tinies, for example, but for whatever reason have a much harder time bonding with them the way they do with larger dolls.

Living space plays a role in it too. My house is large and my room looks like a twister hit it most of the time, so I would probably lose a Puki if I wasn't mindful of where I set it. And the fact that I have ferrets doesn't help(ferrets are notorious thieves and will drag off and hide anything they like if it's small enough for them to move it).

On the same token, having a rather messy/crowded living area would make it a little difficult to have larger dolls, though I'm sure it can be done.

    7. I have 1/4 and 1/3 BJDs. Both sizes suit me. Moreover, I have a lot of non-bjd dolls of 1/6 format

    8. I knew that MSD is a great fit for me almost immediately, as I've owned many non-BJD dolls in the same size and I've always liked it. Not too big, not too small, just perfect. :) I can still easily take my dolls with me and sewing for this size is a pleasure.

    9. My first BJD was a Yo-SD. I had no experience with BJDs prior to that and, as silly as it sounds, she seemed so big - I guess I had a different picture in my head. But I got used to her and ordered 2 sisters for her, also Yo-SD. The first sister came home and then I bought my first MSD doll second hand. The MSD doll just felt more comfortable for me...for dressing and posing and such. I ended up selling 2 of my 3 Yo-SD dolls and don't regret it. I've told myself I can not invest in a SD-sized doll - purely because it would require new clothes, shoes, wigs, etc. I have a TON of stuff for MSD dolls and feel very comfortable with that size. So for now I would say MSD is the best fit for me. (I reserve the right to change my mind though. ;) )

    10. I've broken most if not all of my own "arbitrary rules" for doll ownship since I got involved with BJDs. At first it was like; no SD dolls, no tinies, no boys, no anthros, nothing gothic etc. My second doll was a SD boy from Dollmore and there went the no SD size and no boys :sweat. I find I have more fun/enjoyment with changing the overall looks of an SD doll than the MSD size dolls.

Currently, however, I'm being over run with tinies! I'm finding that they are helping me "justify" getting involved in the world of miniatures that I've always been facinated with but for some reason never let myself get involved with (maybe due to cost for the houses and what not?). As time goes by I find myself getting ready to sell off almost all of my MSD size dolls save for 2 or 3.

I do think it helps to see dolls in person, especially for the bigger dolls (would really love to see a Lusion in person as I really want one but am super afraid of the size) but it does become something all together different when the dolls actually belong to you to really find out if you like it or not.

    11. I knew from the start that if I ever got a BJD, it'd have to be an SD. Nothing smaller. I hate small dolls and medium sized dolls like MSDs look way too childish for me. I'm very picky and like more mature looking dolls- male dolls that I can look at and model after my ideal guys. Luckily, I had found the ideal guy for me since most of the guys I like usually share similar facial features/skin colour, so he is perfect to me. I can make him look like several different people all at once and don't feel the need to get another doll just yet. I may....-may- get another guy in the very distant future, but it'd have to be a SD sized doll like mine is. I don't like small dolls- they're not fun to cuddle with. c.c That's just me, though.

    12. Mine really have gotten bigger over time. I did a lot of research before I bought my first dolls. I knew I wouldn't want anything smaller or bigger. Over time my taste has changed (by about 8cms) ;) and now I like slightly larger dolls. I know I would never go over that size. Anything more than 65 would be far to big for me, I wouldn't have room. Also the doll would look out of place against the smaller ones.

    13. Truer words were never spoken/written. I always thought I wanted a SD13 but when I saw and SD I liked the proportions better? It was unexpected but true... then I held a Yo-SD and it was just over. I really love the SD and Yo-SD sizes but I could never have predicted it unless I had seen them in person.

    14. Ever since I first got into this hobby, I am fascinated by big-sized dollies like Iplehouse EID or Soom Idealian :D But at the end, I decided to adopt a 70-cm LUTS SSDF. The only problem I have with him is when I need to carry him somewhere. HE IS HEAVY..... I realize later after saw some of my friend's tinies, I want to own one too, though. So I did bought two tinies and I know I'll love them just like my big boys.. Therefore on the overall, I think it has no effect on me, because all doll size will just okay as long as I like them. But clearly small-size doll will be suitable to be carried everywhere without backpain XD

    15. For my first bjd, I bought what I could afford. I know I didn't want a tiny one, so I went up to MSD size. I love that size, but I also know now that I want a bigger one. I'm not disappointed, but I love diversity in my dolls. For what it's worth, I now also have a layaway on an angell-studio tiny :D

    16. When I first held my MSD boy I was amazed at the weight and size of him - for some reason I had been expecting a very small, light doll. Now that I've had him for so long (and that I myself have gotten taller and stronger) I can carry him about with ease. My boyfriend commented that he was 'a good weight' (whatever that means), but now my eyes are wandering over to the 70cm SD's. I love big substancial things which I can cuddle and which give me a real work out when I carry them around.

I see my MSDs as older teenagers - Cesavier is 19 years old, and Seraphine will be within the 17-20 age range when she arrives (I need to meet her before I can decide). The Dollzone Yuu which I have my eye on I would put at about the age of 25.

I enjoy the price of the MSD's and they are a very lovely size, but if my financial situation was excellent and I had enough time I'd definitley have an army of huge dolls alongside my 2 MSDs.

    17. Hello! I just couln't find any other thread for this, and I didn't really know where to post it? Oh well, I guess a mod can help me if I messed up ;)

So, I am pretty new with BJDs (even though I have heard of them for almost a year or two) and I want to hear you guys thoughts!
I know it's a little bit strange but I want all my dolls to be in the same size sort off? xD
But I can't make up my mind if I'm going to own a SD size or YoSd? I don't like MSD that much, and that is quiet bad really, but I quess thats just me :sweat

What I like the most about the SD-size is that they are alot more easy to have diffrent styles and
personalities. The thing is that I think they are so big, and I don't want them to be in their boxes all the times, so then I have to make more room for them and so on.
What I like about YoSds is that they are so small and cute! What I don't like is that alomst every YoSd doll looks like little kids, and becouse they are so small they become harder to do faceups on and other stuff.

Which doll should I consider to get?
      :aheartbea
How did you think ween you picked the size for your doll?

    18. Honestly. . . at the time, I just looked to see which doll I liked, then looked at how big it was afterwards *laughs*. And I still do that. ^^ ;; and I mean I thought my doll was /huge/ when it came here too because I was used to Barbies and Pullips and Dals.

    19. I was a total fan of the Slim MSD dolls:)! I started out with an SD sized girl but since I never really bonded with her, I automatically thought SD sized dolls were not for me. But one day I bought a SD head that I adored and thus I have been converted to MSD and SD dolls for now;).We'll see how things go later on!

    20. How did you think ween you picked the size for your doll?
First I thought of MSD because they were either too small or too large.
But found out very quickly that SD suits me best, because they are easier to make something out of, and i have more characters storys that are better suited for a SD face / age.
I still have to try a YoSd, but are afraid that they wont suit me ^^' But they are så cute and the smaller ones too =)
