Figuring out what doll size suits you.

Jan 15, 2012

    1. I always knew I wanted more than one size. I like exploring possibilities.

I have from YoSD to SSDF, and every size has its benefits. With my YoSD, he isn't just small and cute, he's 1/6 scale so there are more props and furniture options out there. My MSDs are just as cute but can have more detailed clothing and are a little easier to make stuff for. The largest concentration I have is in the SD to 70cm range. I like the weight of the bigger dolls and their presence. It's also more fun to cuddle with the bigger ones :sweat. Their clothes look the best, IMO.

I have never bought a doll for its size alone. It's always been about how awesome I thought they were. The only size I bought and then changed my mind about was mature minis. I wouldn't want smaller than YoSD, either.

    2. I like and have all sorts of sizes. There really isn't a size I don't like, other than the really really small puki's. My first is Sd sized, I love her. Two more like her are coming eventually. My second is a msd sized. She's alright, I'll probably get another sometime down the road. My third is a mature tiny (barbie porportions as opposed to standard yosd). I adore her, I'd definitely get another if I could. My fourth was a tiny anthro, who I also adore. And within the next few days I should be getting a yosd on layaway. Though I don't have one, yet, I do greatly want a 70cm+ doll too after seeing them in person.

When I got my first, I had never seen a doll in person before. I was very amazed at how big she was. I kinda liked her size, even if she did take up a larger amount of space than I was used to. I had gotten my second shortly thereafter... I had some bonding issues with her in the beginning but it wasn't about her size. I have since bonded with her, and I do like the size. There have been a few other msds that I've been interested in since, though they aren't as high on my list as others. When I got my third, I was amazed at how delicate she looked. I love taking photos of her. I feel the same way about my anthro too. I really really like tinies now. Lol

As I said previously the only size I really don't care for are the super tiny dolls, the ones that might be two inches tall at best. After seeing one at a meet, I felt that it was just too small. I'd be too afraid about losing it or stepping on it or something else really bad to be able to really enjoy it.

Otherwise, I secretly have a goal to have at least one doll of every major size catagory. ;)

    3. I think I really love 1/3 sized dolls :3 So much doll!

As much as I love and would like to own a PKF Pong Pong one day, I'm worried I won't be satisfied with the fact that it's such a tiny doll!

    4. For me the MSD and smaller ones are too childish and cutey looking to me, so I tend to go for the bigger ones. Since my friend has every size imaginable for BJDs I knew which sizes I liked and which ones I didn't before I ordered my first one. And don't get me wrong, there are some MSDs that I do like/want but the majority are too cute for my tastes.

    5. I dunno...the larger dolls seemed to draw me in more because... I've never owned large (non-BJD)dolls before. Plus, I like the idea of having one I can hold in my arms and not just the palm of my hand.

    6. Unfortunately I don't seem limited or deterred by size. I have a 26cm all the way up to 80cm and all the sizes in between it seems.

I think it'd be easier if I did limit myself to size.. there'd be somewhat less to be looking at for specific characters which may make the looking for sculpts longer than maybe a month or two between dolls before buying another.

    7. I'd like to stick for 64cm to 70cm with my boys and 57cm to 65cm for girls. (Adult)

I thought I'll be sticking to SD sized dolls but right now, I am getting crazy looking at Fairyland and Iplehouse tinies. Saving for one actually. I think it really depends.

    8. I wonder if there's anyone else whose size preference changes as much as mine does ^^;

When I first took interest in BJDs, it was definitely the ~60cm dolls that intrigued me. I'd never handled anything bigger than a Barbie-sized doll before this, and the detail on the features and clothing of larger dolls were fascinating. And then I became interested in minis (so adorable!). And currently, tinies!

    9. I went for MSDs. Getting into the hobby, I definitely wanted something that was different from any other doll I'd owned before, and MSDs seemed like a happy middle as far as BJD sizes went (not tooo big, but big enough to make it interesting for me!).

I hadn't seen one in person, so I had no idea what to expect (you can look at the inch-conversion of their height and pictures as much as you want, but seeing it in person is a whole other experience!) When my first girl's shirt came in before her, I was tickled! It was as big as my ipod! I've got six MSDs now, with a seventh body on the way. :3 I love them.

But, I also have my first tiny (MY first--I've bought a few tinies for friends as gifts) in the mail, too. And now I want a pukipuki as well. And one 75 cm fellow (all in due time, hahahaa...). MSDs will be what my collection's mostly about, but it's also really fun to get dolls of other sizes if you find a couple you enjoy.

    10. I'm still trying to figure it out! LOL!

    11. I think it's common in the beginning to say that you like a certain size of doll, but then later on see a doll that takes your breath away and changes your mind.
I haven't invested in a doll yet. I have fallen in love with the puki sized dolls though, but I can also see myself graduating to larger dolls eventually too.

    12. My first four dolls were all MSD sized, and while i loved the size, there were other dolls that were other sizes that I wanted as well. I impulse-bought an SD at a convention and for a while I was very happy with him! I also ended up getting three others SDs, but after a while found I wasn't enjoying them as much, as the cost of keeping them clothed etc was more expensive to me than what I'd spent on my MSDs, and I felt it wasn't worth it.... I also wasn't used to handling the extra ~20cm and they were more of a hassle to me than anything. I eventually ended up selling all of them off~ (even two which were, at one point, my dream dolls).

I also had 4 puki-sized tinies at one point, but their posing was not the best and I didn''t do anything with them because of it (actually, I moved last year and while unpacking in the new place, I opened a box to find them and totally forgot I had them.... all my other dolls were already unpacked. xD) so I sold them all too!

MSD are my favourite size, but I also still ave two YOSD size... not so much because of the size, but just because I just like those two dolls! If I weren't so attached to them I'd probably only have MSDs. Even now I don't plan on buying anymore Yo's unless something really cute comes along. xD

I think it's an expensive way to test things out, but you'll never really know what you're happy with unless you go through a bunch of different sizes! It'd be good if you had people you could see in person that had dolls of different sizes... because then you're able to maybe say "Oh, SDs are too big for me" without dropping $400 or so on a doll you don't know you're going to enjoy.

    13. I know I like 1/6th and tiny scale because I have experience with them already... A doll that I am in love with but may never be able to afford is an SD... and part of the reason I have hesitated to seriously try to save up for him is because, well... SD dolls are HUGE compared to anything that I have owned before...

:|I suppose I shall find out somewhat soon how I feel about MSD sized dolls. Since I recently ordered one.

    14. I didn't even think about it!
I had two friends into dolls and they both have SDs so I wanted one to go well with theirs.

After getting one I have grown to like that size.
They are a great size, easy to photograph and their faces are big enough to really see the beautiful face up and such.
Sure they get a bit heavy after carrying around for a while, but hey, at eats then the muscles in my arms get to work.

    15. mmmm... tough one. for me it depends on maturity. i like my big ones mature. my little ones are toddler/little girl. but my mimifee is more like a teen to me. i had one that was large and childish and we just did not bond....

    16. I don't limit myself by size... I just go for whatever dolls really grab me. The size & body type is secondary to the overall intuitive effect. I don't really like Tinies, but there have been 4 so far that I loved enough to buy. If I fall in love, it doesn't matter whether or not I'm going to have to start shopping for a whole new size of clothing-- and this often turns out to be the case. ;; I have dolls ranging from 10cm to 80cm, with pretty much every size represented in-between.

But since I'm fond of men with long legs, I'm really most partial to the big boys, 60+up. :aheartbea Most of the collection is 60+. I love their presence, their weight, their poise, and the way they look sitting around the house. They're also easier to handle & dress.

(And, if you do any kind of weight-training, you will find yourself able to schlep even the massive 7-lb. EID Superheroes to a meetup in the park without getting winded. As soon as I started working out, this was one of the nicer benefits I noticed. ^.^ My little chicken-wing biceps may never get as big as Luo the Strongman's, but I can at least bring him out for social calls!)

    17. I really didn't consider size when I started buying BJDs. I just bought whatever pretty face attracted me. However, I am doing some reconsidering. After purchasing one YoSD and having problems making her clothes, I am considering selling her. I am both near-sighted and far-sighted, and usually I play with the dolls without my glasses. She's too little to enjoy without my glasses.
My MSDs and SDs are fine, glasses or not. I did buy one 80cm boy and have regretted the size because there are no clothes or shoes available except from that one manufacturer which is seriously limiting. But I bought that boy for his pretty face!
So I guess what you want to do with these guys might dictate what size you get. The tinies are very portable, I understand, and so are the YoSDs if you are interested in having a doll who is easy to take with you. MSDs and SDs are more likely to have clothes and accessories. The supersize guys can be hard to clothe. It's up to you.

    18. This is something I really have to start considering. I want a decent sized doll but at the same time a small one would just increase the cute factor :c I have to figure this outtttt! lol

    19. Hm, I guess one have to see the size of the doll in real life first?

Before I bought my first doll I was only looking at MSD dolls because they were not so pricey like the SD ones but then I fell in love with a SD doll and ordered him and until now SD13 is my favourite doll size. I have Dolls in other smaller sizes as well but SD13 is the best size for me.

I don't really like bigger dolls than that, and if, only with a small looking head with 8-9 inch size.
So it's really difficult to estimate the right size when you never saw a BJD in real life.

    20. When I first got into the hobby, I was only really interested in dolls that were 70cm tall. I think it's because those were the ones that grabbed my attention first and introduced me to the hobby. Little by little I started trying out smaller dolls. I became interested in yosd size after seeing a Littlefee when they first came out at a meet years ago but it wasn't until this year that I finally got a yosd sized doll - arguments along the lines of why would I pay so much for so little resin kept me from getting one sooner - and now they are my favourite size. Mostly because I tend to be awkward, I find larger dolls more difficult to handle that smaller ones. I find the bigger ones stunning beyond compare, but I have a lot more fun playing with the tinies.
