Finish one doll? Or complete your doll collection? What comes first?

Jun 19, 2009

    1. I do not buy to create a physical representation of a character.

I've gone both ways in my collection: purchased dolls as I saw them (must do this for limiteds). I also purchased a head and then later a complete doll of a discontinued mold (CP Ttori elf). So some things you have to buy when you see it. But I try to plan things through.

I ordered two migi heads with out any idea of what I was going to do with them. I had just discovered the company/artist and the ordering time was open; so I just ordered the two heads. But I saw this as a good thing. So one year later, one now has a faceup and it shares a body with my lati (actually 4 heads one body). I can take my time waiting for an artist that I must have do the face-up so I can have exactly what I want. My next purchase will be another lati (will sell the head) and then the 4 heads can share 2 bodies. lol

I do purchased based on "feeling" and not a plan. So much so that I wrote a PLAN, but haven't stuck to it. It did help me with finding what I need (too many floating heads, so body buying is next) and what I would like in the future. Though those Littlefee's threw me off, I wasn't going to go with yo-sd size... oh well. I have a wish list but I keeps on changing, so its changed more to a "want sd girl" or "want cute mini boy" and then I just make a list for each one and the first sale or great deal will take it.

I do get the factory/company to do the face-ups as much as possible. At least I can live with it for a year or so (or until I feel the need to change it). I do get clean heads (love 'em GO's) but I typically have an artist in mind to do them before I buy.

Right now I'm in the "must get clothes and shoes for everyone" phase. Everyone must have ONE complete outfit... of course I'm still trying to get all the black heads painted as well. Then I need to do manicures and maybe some blushing.

It really never ends. Hope my little rant made sense.

    2. Depends entirely on what I spy for sale at a particular time. Or what I'm obsessing over at the moment (hair, faceups, shoes... you get the idea.)

Sometimes the "perfect thing" appears when you least expect it; and in some cases you get it THEN or you lose out. So.

    3. I'm doing a bit of both at the same time. Because I don't want to spend too much money all at once, I've planned when I'm going to buy each of the dolls on my to-buy list. At the moment, Evie is next, who I intend to get in the first six months of next year. In the meantime, I'm saving for my current doll Alys to get a new face-up (and probably a light body blush) and I've just purchased her new eyes, a new wig and too many clothes. So I'm spoiling the doll I have, but planning for the rest of my horde at the same time.

    4. Hey :P Well, I'm just trying to 'complete' one doll at a time. :sweat I don't think I would be happy if I had every single doll I said "OMG DO WANT!!!" to in the past six or so months. I'm just focusing on getting(and completing!) one doll/character at a time.

    5. i have a ton of resin here. and not one is complete. however some are further along than others.

how i go about aquireing more of my collection. something comes up i want and it will cost more to get second hand if i miss it. i grab it then. and then go back to saving for stuff for the resins, or if i find something at a killer deal.

everything else cause i'm so picky is as i find it, or i design it. same as the dolls, currently though at 11 complete bodied dolls, i've started getting my *arse* in gear and making stuff and or commisioning it.

    6. I'd rather complete each doll first in most cases. =) Although I do see how you can easily get caught up in a mix. Like I plan on getting a Volks FCS MSD, and after that putting together a Mika kit myself.

Once I get that Mika I don't know if I'll finish her up first, as I know she'll need about 6 months of work to get her where I want her or buy a Yo-SD Lin before then, seeing as the price on them isn't getting any cheaper. :-/ I feel like if I don't act soon I'll look back and find they're at $1,000 when a few months earlier I could have gotten one for $700.

Plus, after I get the Lin I'll want to get her a few new wigs, some glass eyes are a must, some new hands for cuteness sake and such.

    7. It's determined by finances and opportunity for me. I'm currently working on finishing one doll, have a floating head, and have one on the way. The one on the way is coming home early due to an event, and will get her commissioned faceup as soon as finances allow. In the mean time I'll give her one and continue to work on the complete boy. The only other thing I'm planning on buying this year is a body for the floating head so that he can be complete. I may or may not snatch another migi head this year since opportunity varies with that sculptor, but I plan on taking 2-3 years to complete all 6 of my planned dolls. I also have a specific order for the rest of them to come home in (based on my personal levels of obsessiveness and how much fabric I have stocked up for that doll :P).

I find that it really helps my enjoyment of my dolls if I just take things as they come and focus on working on what I have. Otherwise it's just a mad dash to obtain one doll after another, and that is ultimately unsatisfying imo.

    8. I'd get all my dolls dressed up before I bought any others--but tattoos and alternative outfits could come later.

    9. I love completing dolls to a certain point first. There's things like eyes, wigs and face ups which I'm constantly going to be updating as THEY grow up in my mind. But I love how having a completed doll makes me feel.

Then again, I think I may be a rarity since I know exactly what I want to do with a doll as soon as i order them, and have half their stuff on order or slots reserved by the time I get them. XD

    10. For me I would rather finish one doll. I had that with a Juri 08 head I got in the event from Fairyland. I have so many dolls I want to get but I'd rather have my dolls complete. Thankfully my friend had a body she wasn't keeping and sold it to me to help me complete my Juri. Otherwise I would still be sitting here figuring out how to get a body for my boy. :3

    11. Mine have to have at least an outfit or two once they arrive, or I can't really enjoy them!

    12. Thanks everyone for the responses so far! It's very interesting to see how everyone else approaches bringing their dolls home vs. "to life". ^^ I think I've brought plenty home this year---so for the rest of the year I'm devoting myself to making them look the way I envision. ;D

      Don't get me wrong; I have full personalities/backstories/yada yada for my dears, in that sense they are not "blank" it's just that...at their current "unfinished" state, I feel as if they can't truly "project" their intended personality yet. Because dolls aren't human, their outward appearence is just as important to me, if not more so, than "who they are on the inside". Because the inside....is just me. A projection of my stories and personality. And I can make them who they are, changing it on a whim if I so desire...however, their appearence is something that I believe has a certain hold... it's as if the physical appearence holds the personality in the doll world, while how you feel on the inside is what makes one's personality in our human reality. So I feel as if with our dolls, physical appearence projects personality or "who they are"---does that make sense? ^^;

So my dolls have their personalitites, but it's as if they just can't properly show it---and by "completing" them that's what I hope to change...so everyone can see who they are! [And I can feel at peace with them, hee, hee.] *^^*

    13. I try to strategize. Meaning I buy a doll with intentions of completing him first, but if I see 'that one doll' who say, happens to be a Limited and I'm running out of time to buy him, then of course I'll 'add to my collection' first. But I do prefer finishing dolls over adding more. It just doesn't seem to happen to me lately. @_@.

    14. I've just got my first BJD but from my experience with my smaller fashion dolls, I'm determined to completely finish this doll before thinking of getting a second one. Of course, there are financial issues to take into consideration, but my decision has to do with my general "way of thinking" rather. I'm a disorganized, absent-minded person so I always try to work on one thing at the time; this way, I can concentrate in one thing, try my best at it, and have it done in no time. I have to do one thing at a time, or else I don't do anything at all.

So, following this little philosophy of mine, I want to finish with my first BJD before even thinking of jumping onto the next one. I want to be completely satisfied with my doll, feeling that I've worked and customized it to the point I find it perfect in my eyes. A BJD is a big investment, takes time and dedication, and I don't want to reflect on it in the future and think I could've done it better, or that it was a waste because I didn't like how it turned out in the end. Well, I know I'm being overdramatic in here... Just to put it in simpler words: after spending so much money and time in one single doll, I wouldn't want to do the same with a second one only to realize I didn't like neither. I hate having regrets.

    15. Both are rather on going. My dolls' characters are constantly evolving, so I'm changing them slowly- depending on the character. And when it comes to adding to the collection- it depends on how much money I have :sweat

    16. At first, it was about finishing the master list of the collection, but, as you said, it's not as satisfying without completing dolls. I'm moving over to completing dolls 100% before moving on. Not only will it ensure every doll turns out perfect, it will also slow down new additions to the collection.

    17. Hm... this is a really good question. On the one hand, once I have my boy, I want to get him some nice things, but I also want him to have his mate as quick as he can. I think I'd definitely take some time between dolls to get costumey bits, furniture, a change of wig, etc., but I do want the first two to come as close together as I can, and then I would wait to get my third.

      =^__^=

    18. i have to physically restrain myself from buying more dolls because i desperately need to finish the ones i already have :doh i want to buy clothes and accessories and get my boys completed, but then i also want to add to the family so they can have their partners and be complete in that sense.

    19. I work on one individual doll at a time. Though sometimes there are oppertunities I can't pass up. Like I wanted to focus on completeing my doll's wig and getting the floating heads bodies, but one of my last boys popped up at a price that I doubt I could ever get again. It was almost $800USD less than everyone else was asking! and he was complete rather than missing a head or other body parts.

My dolls are not bought for pre-existing characters I find they create their own. I find the dolls appear when the time is right :3

    20. Interesting question. I don't really have pre- written characters for my dolls. I have a few MNMs, and I like the ones that I have made larger Cosplay outfits of for myself .
There are other dolls where I have an idea for a certain look, and find the doll that I think will fit it, and other dolls that I've wanted and created looks for them. But I have managed to more or less complete each doll's look that I've wanted. I have another ongoing project at the mo which I am slowly working on, and another that just needs her boots and goggles to finish her look, so I don't think I'm doing too badly.
I think I might need one more female doll ( either an AIL Chloe or Heyley), as I have a certain look I want for her, that won't be right for any of my other dolls, and then I'm done for a while.
I don't have a long doll wish list which helps.:sweat:lol:
