First Doll: How much planning went into it? Plan success or foiled plan?

May 26, 2009

    1. My first doll was something of an impulse-buy. The only planning was in her cost. *Laughs.* It went rather well, though.

    2. I think the experience it's different for each user, many of the first dolls are planned with anticipation, in my case that was it, as you, I knew the BJDs many years before starting to develop a real interest in them, but when I did I planed, at the time I had a good income so I didn't had to wait long to have the money to buy one, but my most important concern was to find a perfect one in a literal "sea" of factories...:sweat

    3. My first doll was my DoD Homme Ducan, and he was rather well-planned. He's (still) my favorite ever mold, and I absolutely adored him.
The only thing not-planned was how I got him, which ended up being as an anniversary present from the boyfriend.
He's undergone a TOTAL change since I first got him through - the character I originally wanted him for no longer fits, so he's another, just as beloved OC now instead ^_^

    4. My first doll was as LeekeWorld Romeo and despite everything I felt in my gut about his head to body sizing, I went ahead and bought him anways.
BIG mistake on my part. I ended up LOATHING the body but still loving the head but unfortunately, because of the bad experience, I ended up just selling him whole hog because I just couldn't deal with him anymore.

    5. I planned, and planned and planned...and planned so hard that I lost interest in all the dolls in my wishlist. In despair, I just went back, looked at sculpts that I still liked, and found an awesome deal. So that was my first doll. xD

    6. I was set on a Volks Kun for my first sculpt. I only knew of Volks dolls. It was when I was talking to one of my friends that she found Ipelhouse. I knew that I wanted an SD sized doll- and originally I planned to get myself a YID Freezia. I put her in the shopping cart, planned her wig and clothes... and then my friend found Mars before I clicked buy.

And that was it. He was perfect. I got him with a custom face-up from the company and he is my baby. His first character didn't pan out too well. I didn't love him. I almost sold him recently... but I re-customized him and I am in awe. I wish I could display him, but I really need to get myself a case because I have two curious kittens and... well, that wouldn't end well.

I think when you find that 'perfect' doll you just know.

    7. I think mine became sort of an impulse buy. I was initially thinking of getting a honey-delf. But got totally sucked in by little Ante elf and ended up purchasing after her after staring at little choco Hdelf for the longest time. Im still waiting for Ante to come home at the moment, and have already purchased clothes, wigs and eyes for her @_@ shes gonna be a pampered girl.

    8. when I first fell in love with BJD's I thought I would save up the money and get myself a big doll. then my dad offered to get me my first one, I had to budget though, if I wanted eyes, hair and cloths I would have to budget it with the doll along with tax, and shipping. So I found RS Mei. I thought she would be the best sculpt for my one character. But then I looked at who would be good for her husband and sadly the one I wanted was an SD, so last minute my dad told me to order my doll and I picked the Pandora, I had seen a few pictures so I picked her. I had hoped her to be the same character, but once she got here and I started to play with her she wasn't anything like my character ^.^ ah well, sometimes you get foiled like that.

    9. My first BJD was a Resin Soul Mu. I first spotted him while doing research on Blythes (I had no Idea what they even were but Hasbro released that press release about the Blythe-Littlest pet shop team-up so reasearching I went!) and I also spotted Pullips. Well I went for the cheaper option and bought my first Taeyang and then another and so on. All the while Mu was nagging at the back of my mind, so this last Solstice I asked for money only for gifts and put it all towards him! I ended up getting him about a year after I first fell in love with him.

    10. My 1st doll was.. lol a mixture of planning and impulse. When I decided to buy a doll, I looked through a lot of sites. I was *planning* to buy a MSD girls, because SD seemed too expensive and too big for me, and none of the male dolls caught my eye at that time. So I was deliberately looking through MSD girls.
While browsing through sites, I noticed an incredibly beautiful doll. She was SD, and she was limited edition, they've just put up the teaser, but the sales were not open yet. That was love at first sight! But since she was SD and an expensive one, I closed that page and forgot about it for a while. (well, of course I couldn't really "forget").
Then I finally decided to get a MSD girl, she was a cute one, with fullset. Was pretty happy with her, at least by price/appearance she seemed to be a best choice at that time.
Later I showed that doll to my mother and said that I would like to buy her. Showed here a few dolls I liked, and she agreed that that MSD girl I chose was the best one of them. And then on a sudden impulse, I showed her that other doll, the SD... She sad that it was the best doll of all I showed to her, and asked me why I don't want to get this one!
I was like... 0___o .... T___T.... because the doll is limited! And expensive, like twice the price of the MSD girl. I could never imagine I would buy her!
And then the miracle happened - my mother gave me the money that I was missing to buy this doll! I was shocked, in a good way lol The ordering period for her just started and within the next few days I ordered her!
She arrived in 1.5 months, and was so amazingly beautiful. I never regret I got her instead of that MSD girl (never got that MSD eventually, even though I still like her).
And miracles happen lol My mother never liked BJD, and was always kind of against me buying one. But giving me the rest of the sum on that day... I still don't know why she did it. It was the only time she gave me money on the doll lol Now I have 10, and all the rest I paid myself. But this very first one is so special to me :3

So the planning for my first doll worked only in one point - I planned to get a girl, and I got a girl. xD

    11. I got interested in bjds thru my daughter. I was making clothes for her dolls..She bought me my first doll. It turned out to be not so fun. The doll was so "kicky" I could not dress her. Then I started to look around and saw so many beautiful dolls. My daughter has given me quite a few. How lucky is that. Now II am totally addicted,.

    12. Not much planning actually.
I never thought I really wanted to own a doll, but I always looked at pictures and boom, I saw my girl, had the money, a few days later she was ordered.
I did ask the dealer I orderd her from a few questions about eyes and wig and stuff, since I was quite new to all of this, but in the end she was an impulse buy. Because it was love at first sight.

    13. I ended up getting mine out of an Impulse-ish buy. For maybe two weeks I was looking at the HZ WangYe, but luckily I didn't have the money to get him. I few weeks laster I found the AH Raul, and convinced my mom that we should get him :3

    14. So much planning and saving, lol~
I spent a lot of time researching about dolls, as well as dropping hints to my parents that I wanted to get one. It was when I started sewing little clothes and looking at wigs and shoes that they got the message.
Also because I couldn't decide on which to get. xD; The very first doll I had wanted to get was a BF Patrick. Then my decisions kept wavering between him, a BF Louis and a DZ Luke.

I ended up getting a BF Olive boy about a week and a half ago. :) We're happy as clams~

    15. My first and second dolls...er, maybe all of my dolls were complete impulse buys >.<

Pretty much as soon as I saw bjds in person I knew I had to have one. A month later I'd picked out Maika because I knew I could afford him, and sold my copic markers to buy him. I spotted the Lati boys while I was waiting for him, and I realized that I might be a little strange because I was quite possibly in love with bits of resin. I had Ed 6 weeks later. (The rest of the Latis save for L and Irene have since followed ;) ) I don't really stick to my own plans well I've noticed, nearly all of the dolls I currently own were completely impulse buys- they looked awesome at the time, they spoke to me, and I bought them all XD

    16. I planned. I heard about bjds long before I saw one and it didn't register what they were. THEN came the 2005 Haute Doll super dollfie special issue and I bought that. I thought I had to buy a Volks or I'd get some horrible knock off but my friend told me that other doll companies were totally legit. I went to a doll meet at San Diego Comicon and saw a Lishe that knocked my socks off. I saved up for her and bought her many months later.

    17. It took me 15 minutes to decide ) My friend was selling a doll and I liked that doll very much. That's why I desided very quickly. But at the same time I was saving money for my planned dolls, which should be "the first", I bought them 1 month later.

    18. Two years of planning went into my first doll. I first though BJDs were only Volks and Dream of Doll dolls, and went, "ehhhh do not want." A few years later, I discovered DoA, and through DoA, discovered Fairyland, and...well... <3 I fell in love with the poseability of the minifee body, and bought my first doll after a few weeks of debating head sculpts. XD

    19. My first doll was kind of an impulse buy... I had 3 friends/frenemies who each had a doll, so I felt that I needed one, too. I found the Blue Fairy company, who had just come back from a long hiatus, and decided I was going to order one of theirs. (This was back in the day when there weren't a lot of companies, I didn't know how PayPal worked, and MSD-size was the en vogue size.) I picked "Tiny Fairy Jerome" because of his name-- my mom is a librarian has a thing for saints, and Jerome is the patron saint of librarians, so it was not too difficult to ask her to help my buy this doll.

He's still with me (a little dirty and a little yellowed), and he'll be staying. I'm also a Blue Fairy/Minoru World addict. Even though I didn't give him much thought to begin with, he's got my attention now that I'm a bit more mature. Now, I'm buying these dolls because I love the sculpts, not because I'm trying to one-up some girls I used to be friends with.

Wow, that was not a sweet, uplifting story. :sweat

    20. i have am still in the midst of looking for a first doll but i must say, im quite decided on SNG Milhwa (that is if i ever find him, im gonna hold out til i find him!) it was definitely an impulse XD i saw him and i fell in love.
