First doll w/ or w/o a face-up?

Feb 11, 2011

    1. I ordered both of my dolls without face-ups. I wanted to do it myself, and I've been drawing portraits for years so I figured it couldn't be too hard. By the time I got my second doll I was pretty experienced with it.

    2. I got a second-hand doll for my first, and he did come with a face-up. I was not completely happy with it, though, so I removed it as soon as I did some extra research. I cleaned the doll completely and restrung him, body blushed him, and gave him a new face-up. It was my absolute first one, but I really like how it came out, and I think it helped me to bond with him, because after that he really felt like he was completely mine. For my second two dolls, since they came as pre-owned unpainted dolls from Ebay (from a personal seller, rather than a dealer), I didn't have a choice. I am, however, more inclined to do my own face-ups for them, as it now just seems right, and I think it makes their "birth" feel more personal. Perhaps for someone who was uncomfortable with art, getting a first doll with a professional face-up would be much better, but for me, I've enjoyed doing it myself. :)

    3. I'm going to get my first doll with a face-up from the company, because I think she'd feel a bit naked without it. Once she gets home will be a different story and I'll do my own face-ups, but I don't want her to have to suffer while I get my act into gear :)

    4. IMHO it strongly depends on the character your getting the doll for and how much you like the default faceup. For my first doll, I had a specific character in mind, but I didn't want to have to paint her myself and I didn't know about customizes(or DOA for that matter) So I ordered her with the default thinking I could get used to it. It was the worst decision I ever made as far as BJD's are concerned. It looked nothing like my character, and even after the doll seemed to develop its own new character, the faceup still didn't fit. So I basically wasted $60-70. I made the same mistake with my second doll. From now on, even when I want a normal faceup, I never order dolls with default faceups, just so I can make sure that I get something custom done that I know no matter what, I will love.

But of course that is just me being paranoid and junk. It really depends on what a person is looking for in a BJD.

    5. I will order mine without make-up... It's always wrong >< So I really must thank something above for my friend that are talented make-upper~ Besides, they are my characters so no default or custom-without-my-watching make-up won't fit.

    6. I agree with this. ♥

    7. I bought my first doll with a face-up, because the artist face-ups are so beautiful! :3 Also, I didn't want to run the risk of trying to do my own face-up and screwing up my doll. :(

I think when I'm ready to try my hand at doing face-ups, I'll buy one of the 60cm heads from Junky Spot and use that. If I like it, I can get a body to go with it (or sell it), and if I don't, I'm only out $20.

    8. I decided to get my first doll without the factory face up. Of course, I bought him when Luts EL's regular price was about $500 bucks. It was either the face up or a wig and, for some reason, I chose the wig. *shrugs* But I don't think he looks all that bad. I've gotten so used to it.

      I do plan on getting him a face up sometime soon though. He looks cute like this, but he looks like a sick person! ^^;

    9. Though for your first bjd did you get it with or with out a face-up?
I got him with a face up. I wasn't into or wanted to go anywhere with face ups at that point b/c of the cost of buying supplies. Granted the cost of supplies would've been approximately the same as a company face up, I wasn't thinking of getting any dolls in the future that would need face ups either. So, eh, company face up it was!

Do you think people who are new to bjds should get a face-up first, then try to do a face-up on maybe the second doll, or after a while?
I think people who are new to bjds should do whatever they are most comfortable with! If they know they have the patience to learn and get better at doing face ups without hindering their experience with a doll, then go for it! :)

    10. I took my first (and only one so far) doll with a faceup, since I wasn't fmiliar with BJDs and didn't want to risk ruining my first doll. Plus I was kind of lazy, I guess... But I wanted my doll to be "ready" when I got her, so I choose to have the faceup. If I order another one I think I will do the same because I lack self confidence nd experience to do the faceup myself xD

    11. I think the videos available and online tutorials are a big help to people buying a doll on a tight budget or maybe a used doll that has been wiped clean. I would suggest that as the best way to decide on trying it for the first time. It's really just like putting make up on. No big scary deal if you use the water color based stuff the first times.

I asked the owner selling my first doll leave him bare for me, because she was experienced and I felt more comfortable with a bare face to start with rather than removing it on my own. Now that I have dolls I have bought with and without default face ups, I'm more inclined to do it myself unless I really like the default make up and want to pay for it. I'm still rather afraid of stripping a default face to redo it, though, because of the layers of sealer and not knowing what type of paint is under the sealer spray.

    12. My first doll IS A Migidoll Ryu and I bought him from Migidoll while the option to get a face up was not available. I could not be happier I got to do his face myself and I like how it came out though there are flaws. There's a possibility I'll be getting a Bada soon and he doesn't come with a face up either!XD I guess I never really had a choice in the matter but now face ups aren't something I have to worry about since I can do them myself. I have also given my doll a tattoo (:

    13. Personally I got mine with a face up and I believe they should wait a while until they get one with out one.

    14. I got mine with faceup n___n Personally, I think it's easier to have faceup and especially for myself, I have no idea how to faceup my doll and I think that it's rather troublesome if one day when I want to get my doll with a faceup and especially for the first doll, I prefer my doll to be faceup so that when I open up the package, I can just unwrap and take pictures of her n___n

    15. I got my first doll with a face-up because I was scared stiff in case I ruined her. If you don't have that fear and want to try it yourself go for it. Or if you want an original face-up and are willing to pay slightly more you could try a face-up artist. I'm planning on getting my first doll redone because I think she needs a different look. I think it just adds a bit of a sense of originality to the doll. It makes it your own creation ( in a way)...

    16. With face-up. The original face-up gave her such an awesome expression that I couldn't resist!

    17. I got my first doll second hand, but she had a face up. ^^ The second doll I have ordered, however, is also second hand and half of her face up has been removed. I plan to completely wipe her and attempt to do a face up myself.

I'm only waiting on her, and the stupid USPS is keeping her from me. xwx; And I'm so excited to get her, and to try the face up! I have the stuff already, so all I need is her. xP

    18. I got my first with the company face-up. When I got him I decided he'd feel naked without one, that and I didn't have any supplies to try and do them myself. Since then I've been practicing face-ups on a floating head that I got a little later, so when I feel comfortable enough to do his, I will. n n

    19. I got my first doll, and every doll since, with a faceup. I know it's more expensive that way and company faceups aren't very original or individual, but to me it just makes the doll look better and more real. I don't think I would bond very well with a doll that didn't have a faceup. Plus, I'm not terribly artistic so I don't feel up to doing my own yet, and I don't like the idea of getting a doll only to ship it off to someone else for a faceup right away. So for me the better option is definitely to just go ahead and get a faceup from the company.

I don't think doing your own faceup or not doing your own faceup is a "should" situation. If you want to try one on your very first doll, go ahead. If you want to wait a little longer that's fine too. If you want to be like me and show no signs of ever doing your own that's also not a problem. The only thing I would seriously recommend is that you (general you) wait until you have researched faceups very carefully and know what materials are okay to use and what aren't okay to use on a doll. That way you won't damage your doll.

    20. I've spent waaaay too much on supplies not to do them myself. ;3
