Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. First doll w/ or w/o a face-up?

Feb 11, 2011

    1. I got my first girl recently, w/o a face up. I knew I wanted to do it myself and make her more personal and special to me. Now I just want to do more and more face ups :) I just posted the finished girl in the Critique section.

    2. mine i got with out a face up i would like to get one done to her but i cant do it myself

    3. Mii-tan, my first bjd arrived w/ a face-up. But two or so months after her arrival, I removed her default face-up. It's not because I don't like the default face-up, it's rather "i'm really itching to try and to do a face-up". The face-ups that I made were not horrible but not good, maybe okay. Doing it made me see other sides of Miyoubi and added lots of points to bonding. Plus it's really fun and interesting. X3

For other people, it depends on what they want. Do they like the default face-up enough to keep it or are they brave enough to venture out to try doing their doll's face-up. :3

    4. My first bjd, a pukipuki pong, came with FL's default face-up.
There was nothing I didn't liked about it.

But in the future I will order blank dolls and send them to face-up artists.
I am far from ready to try it myself.

For people who are new to the hobby I would recommend: if you like the default face-up, get it.

    5. I think it's all how the owner feels. Personally, I have no artistic ability whatsoever and I cannot draw the same thing twice, nor even put my makeup on evenly. In this case, I would prefer to get a faceup. Maybe in the future if I have courage and confidence of trying to do a faceup, I would try it. But for now since I am fairly new and wouldn't even know how to start, I won't do it. My first dollies will have default. Unless I decide to get a custom faceup done. ^_^

    6. I have almost everything I need anyways, so why not give it a try and order my first doll without it? Knowing myself, I'll regret saying that.. (can't put makeup on even to save my life!)

    7. my first doll, i purchase with a faceup, because sometimes to find a good face maker is differicult

    8. I purchased my first doll with face-up too because I didn't know someone able to do it for me. Plus, I thought the face-up was great and I didn't want to send my boy just after getting him.

    9. Same here. I got my Zaoll with default faceup because I fell in love with the displayed character. I had no idea it was even possible to create a delicate doll painting by myself as I knew very little about BJDs.
To be honest, I would not try it even now. I do not trust my abilities. :)

    10. Warren came with a face-up and I liked it. I should choose a doll with a face up, but that is just me because I love it to see how it will come, I like surprises :3

    11. I haven't gotten mine yet, but i'm definitely getting him without a faceup. I don't feel like it will be exactly what I want, and it will be less personal. Besides, I have a bunch of friends who are amazing at faceups to help me out. ^w^

    12. I ordered my first one with a faceup, especially because I have any talent to do a faceup!
But when I receive her, what a disaster, I hate her face!
Now she is in a friend's home for a real faceup to my taste!

and the other came with a faceup too, but it is only because they are like that (Kaye Wiggs dolls)!

And now that I have a friend doing great faceup, I will order if possible, only without faceup dolls (impossible for the dolls by Kaye Wiggs!

    13. My first doll came without a face-up, because I was in love with the fact you could customise BJDs completely and that was what I wanted to experience. Four years later I'm quite happy with my face-up skills. :sweat
I love doing face-ups myself, but my second doll came with a (free) face-up and I have not removed it. There's something to be said about a doll that is ready to be played with right from the box.

    14. My first doll had a faceup :P I'm to paranoid to have her sent out to someone to get one.

    15. My first doll had a face-up. I chipped it and had to redo it. It didn't turn out half bad - I've since redone his face two or three times, and every time it turns out better...
I'm still not very good at it, but I actually enjoy trying.

    16. I think it's obviously a personal preference based on what your plans are.

I have to have face-ups on my dolls unless I plan to have them customized. But I've seen lots of beautiful dolls without face-ups and those brave ones who paint their own faces make me want to try it someday.

But if I was getting a new doll, I'd always want a face-up to see how they are supposed to look from the factory.

    17. I would say for most people get a face up for your first doll. If, however, you are artistically inclined, research what you are doing and use the right supplies then go for it. I just wouldn't purchase a limited edition Soom to practise on. I started on an AOD. I have since occassionally purchased with face ups but with the exception of one I have had to redo them as they weren't as particular as I am.

    18. I have just ordered my first, and I'm getting her with a company face-up.

I really want to learn to do face-ups eventually, I think that is part of the whole customization thing that makes the hobby so fun! But I don't want to ruin my first doll and get so frustrated by my limited face-up skills before I even get well into the hobby, if that makes sense. So I'd rather get a doll already with a face-up so I can enjoy her right away, and I can have more time to practice doll painting in general on my Barbies. It's not totally the same (they are vinyl, and don't have glass eyes so I always have to re-paint the eyes) but it's a good way to practice without ruining any resin!

    19. This is a great strategy c:
If you go to a thrift store you can probably find a porcelain doll for cheap - that's how I learned faceups. And porcelain (on the dolls I had, anyway) has a pretty good tooth already, so no MSC needed! → No wasting supplies for resin faceups.

    20. I hadn't thought of trying it on porcelain dolls! I don't use MSC on my Barbies, though. I just paint and wipe, paint and wipe LOL. Since I don't use them for anything besides sewing mannequins and now face-up practice, that works out pretty well!

Acrylics I'm pretty good at...pastels are another story LOL
