First doll w/ or w/o a face-up?

Feb 11, 2011

    1. For my first doll, she wasn't a particularly cheap brand (though neither particularly expensive, I guess), and I'm normally a bit of a penny-pincher, so I wanted to keep the financial blow to a minimum. I bought her without faceup, unstrung, no clothes, wig, or eyes, etc..

Don't regret it a bit BD . I'm artsy, and faceups was one of the reasons I got a BJD, so this was a great opportunity to try a faceup. I ended up kind of disliking my first faceup, so maybe a month later I did another. I would hate to pay so much for just a faceup... I don't like sticking with one thing for long, so I know I'd want to wipe that expensive faceup and do my own soon anyway. There was no point.

I've come back to the BJD hobby after a break, and I was shocked when I was reminded that some people actually keep one faceup for up to three years or more XD . I can't imagine.

For more artsy people, they tend to have the option to make their own faceup, so it makes sense not to bother, but it depends of course.

    2. I got my first doll with a face up, as I have no artistic skills and can barely manage to draw a fairly straight line when I need to *laughs*.

    3. I bought my first doll without a face up, since I did not like the factory face up he would come with. And I wanted to try it myself.
I ended up shipping him out for getting a custom face up since I couldn't do it :sweat
But he ended up with a face up done by myself anyways, because the retouched version (a year or so later) was nowhere near his original looks. Haha I know I'm complicated.

    4. I got mine without, but for economic reasons hahaha!

    5. My first doll was a DZ X and I had asked for the X-2 face-up and was told I could get that...I needed up with the french version which was the X-3 and current face-up of the same doll the make-up was sooo over done I nearly cried and to top it off i was allerigc to the wig it came with. But he looked like he had roseca on his face it was soooo terrible that one of my friends took him and redid his face and got him new hair and new eyes and fixed him because I was sooo upset. But....I have had a wonderful default face-up from BG on my Halloween edition of the Aurora sculpt. So it can go both ways I am personally not very visually artistic so I think it depends on what u want to do in terms of face-up.

    6. I got mine without a face-up... but, even though I draw and paint quite a bit, I'm terrified of doing it myself. My friend knows someone who does beautiful face-ups and I plan on comissioning her for Icarus.

Not saying I won't try my hand at it someday, I plan on buying a couple blank, used heads eventually and using them for practice.

    7. I got my first literally three days ago. Without a face up.
I know it seems silly, but I think throwing myself into the deep end first was a brilliant choice. I did his face up the day I got him, and I couldn't ask for anything better.
Of course I didn't know i could do it, so I had some commissioners on hand to help if I messed up. ^^
Sure, I may have gotten him blank for lack of money (he is a ResinSoul, I'm broke. 'Nuff said), but it's a good choice to go with. Besides, company face ups are not unique in the slightest, a lot of other people have the same face up as you. I don't see the advantage. :P

Ps. Those who have heard RS dolls aren't great; they really are. It's not all this 'You get what you pay for' shit. They easily compare to some of the more expensive brands and my boy is gorgeous, his resin is as thick as any other's, and he's amazing quality. :)

    8. I bought my first doll with, as I liked the company face-up well enough (Luts) and I wanted her to be ready to play with out of the box! I recommend it if you've never seen a BJD in person before and just want to get stuck into playing dress-ups/taking photos. I wanted to sew for my dolls but not paint them (although I did successfully paint my Doll Leaves Ku myself!). All my other dolls have artist-commissioned face-ups and in my experience, a blank head can be hard to warm to right away, and you may be waiting a while for your commission. I might have been put off these dolls if I didn't get the default face-up in the first instance.

    9. im got my first doll with faceup just cause i figure im lazy and it would take forever to get the faceup done XD and its kinda important for the first doll :P

    10. My first doll a "Dollfie dream"....didnt have a faceup... As a matter a fact I gave her a faceup tonight...
She went without for all these years... my next doll did have a factory BBB faceup,
but the doll was purchased second hand... as all my dolls have been since. ( :

    11. I bought mine without face up, I don't really like the companies face ups afterall, well. The basic face ups, when it is about my doll, I'd love to do everything myself. Even the face up and (Maybe) his clothes.

    12. do male dolls tend to come up with a more girly or more natural faceup? What's your experience cause i am debating whether to get my first with or without faceup

    13. With faceup. >.<" My first doll was a blank head (the company did not offer face up at the time and I did not know any artist). I went through hell doing the faceup myself. It's harder than it looks. I also spent a lot on the tools too. Not worth it. If the company offers faceup, go for it.

    14. I bought my first doll with a faceup, because I was a little intimidated at the thought of going out and buying all the materials that I needed. *_* But over a few months, I've gone out and collected materials that I need, one or two at a time, and it doesn't seem like such a financial blow. Now all I need to buy is some MSC off of ebay and I'll be set to go! For my second doll, who I have ordered without a faceup. :)

    15. When I get my doll, I shall probably get her with a default face-up, partially because I love the default, and partially because I don't have the skills to do my own face-up yet. I shall eventually get a cheap practice head to do face-ups on first before I even attempt it. :)

    16. I'd originally been planning on getting a blank doll for my first. Doing a faceup seemed like a great way of giving the doll character and bonding with it. But I kind of fell in love with a certain sculpt and its default faceup so I'll be getting that instead; I wish I could do the faceup myself on this doll, but this one just looks perfect as is. So for me it was a "the doll called to me" more than a "I want a doll with/out a faceup" if that makes sense.

    17. My first four dolls had face ups. Three were default faceups, one was a custom face up because she was second hand. The most recent doll I bought without a face up and am getting him a custom face up. ^^

    18. My first doll and most of my other dolls all came with a faceup as I have near zero artistic abilities... :sweat And I don't really feel like investing money in art supplies that I will most probably not use often. Anyway, most of the time, I actually bought a certain doll because I love its default faceup.

I have been tempted to try doing a faceup on one of the blank heads I have... but I seem to keep finding excuses not too... :|

    19. i'd love to do the faceup myself.. and i feel like i could do it pretty well... but i'm really scared that i would damage the doll - as she will be my first doll, i have no experience at all T_T
      i found a great artist in my city who i'm planning to comission, but i'm affraid that it won't be exactly what i want, or i will get tired of looking at the same faceup too soon and i will want to wipe off the artist's beautiful work ;;
      *dilemma*
is it really more expensive to buy the (quality) materials for the faceup on our own and try..? -_-

    20. I bought my first doll without a faceup, because part of what attracted me to BJDs was the ability to customize them. I was very excited about it. Since then I do occasionally get a doll with a faceup, if I like it. :)
