1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

First doll w/ or w/o a face-up?

Feb 11, 2011

    1. First of all, pardon me with my ignorance. I'm new to DoA. ^^;
Do you do your doll's make up by yourself or pay someone else to do it? In my country, Korea, make-up shop is pretty popula. A lot of people use make-up shop for their dolls. But seems like there are not much information about make-up shop in DoA. Is it just because I'm not good at reseaching or it's really not popular here? :)

I just wonder how many people do make-up by themself for their dolls.

    2. I do all of my own faceups. I've bought some dolls secondhand that already had gorgeous faceups, but wiped them anyway because I just don't really enjoy my dolls or feel like they're MINE if they don't have a faceup by me.

There are lots of artists here. If you have marketplace access, check out the Commissionable Services section and you'll find LOTS of people you can hire to do it. :)

    3. luasdad there are actually a lot of customizers offering face-ups and advertising their services in the marketplace customizer's subforum. I assume you don't have the marketplace access yet?

As for your other question, yes, I guess there are a lot of people who enjoy painting their own dolls. I for instance do both, I paint a part of my dolls myself, but I also often commission other talented people to do it for me. Both options have their advantages and disadvantages though, so I wouldn't know what to recommend ;).

    4. For me it depends on the doll. uvu some I preffer to send out, for some I like their default so much that I decide to order it and for some I do it myself because I really love doing my own faceups and some characters don't have super complicated ones that I can't work on with the skills of an amateur in the process of learning that I possess.

As a matter of fact, however, there are many artists that offer faceups in the customization subforum~ c:

    5. There aren't as many shops in the west that are just for BJD supply as there are in Korea. It's just not been established, yet, I think.

I have made some of my dolls' face-ups, others have their default company face-up. Depends on what I like. ^^

    6. I bought my first doll with the default faceup because I liked it, and felt too nervous to do it myself. I think I'll buy my next doll blank though, because I think it'd be fun to try. :)

    7. You know, I can't remember if my first doll had a face-up as an option or not. It was back when the original shiwoo elves were released and I got mine through a girl who offered a shopping service for them. For a long time I felt like the doll wasn't mine unless I did the face-up myself.

Now, so many years later, I find that i don't even have time to do the face-ups. ._.; I have a peakswood with a default face and it's so beautiful! and I my bluefairy has a face-up from them. I just love their simple face-ups that really set off the molds.

Any more, I just love the way the dolls look without face-ups... I love looking at the sculpt itself.

    8. I got my first doll with a face-up, largely because it was free... I'm not sure whether I would have paid $50+ for a faceup. But, I'm really glad I did, because I got my second doll soon after without a face-up, and I think it made 'bonding' with her more difficult... I am generally crafty/artistic but not great at painting or drawing realistically. It took me several tries to get something that I feel satisfied with, and the first few face-ups made me feel rather ashamed, or like I must be a bad/newb-ish doll owner and made me not want to share pictures.

The bottom line: I think if my first doll had come without a face-up, I might have been scared out of this hobby without even beginning. But I am glad to have been able to try my hand at it so soon after, because I can only go up from here:)

    9. I ordered my first doll with a custom face up from the company (Dollmore). I'm not a really good painter and the thought of doing it myself scared me! :P I'd advise for new doll owners to maybe consider getting one on their doll, but if you have the confidence to do it then go for it. :) I waited a little longer to get my doll to save for a face up and it was worth it to me.

    10. I got mine (a DOD Ducan) with one of the company's option faceups. I was too scared to get him without because I didn't want to try it out and create a mess that could ruin him for life or something--it's virgin owner's paranoia. :)) Also, I wanted to play with him immediately without waiting for anything; he IS my first baby, after all.

    11. I got my first girl with a face up. Just because she is my first and I don't know anyone that does face up yet. I also don't have an artistic bone in my body.

    12. I got my first BJD, an Homme Kirill, with DOD's Goth Makeup. I figured I should have my first boy with all the fixings. I regret not getting him his DEFAULT makeup. xDDD I'd like to try my hand at doing my own faceups, though.

    13. I got all but one of my dolls with faceup. The one without is because I had a hard time finding the doll and the one I found did not have a faceup. Two of my dolls have custom faceups which they had when I bought them. Two more dolls came from a small doll maker who's simple, soft faceups I like. But I think I will not be happy with a generic company faceup anymore and do not think I could do it myself, so I would probably buy without faceups in the future And then send out to an artist to be done. If I were asked by a beginning collector, I would recommend buying with faceup for the first doll. There is still plenty of creativity in choosing eyes, wig and clothing.

    14. My first dolls (ordered) were purchase without faceup (sadly still working on their faceups :( )
My first doll (recieved) I got with a faceup because he was instock with faceup and sleeping face only, so I was desperate because he had not been in stock for a while when I was lurking but had no money to buy a bjd. I planned to wipe his face but I end up liking it, I may just change the lips someday which I think are too rosey.

He came about a month before my first dolls who were actually ordered two months before but were not in stock, so I don't really know which is really my "first doll".

    15. I don't have any dolls yet, so I can say what would I buy. At first, when I just started to be interested of BJD's, I thought I definitely would buy a "complited" doll, with faceup. I thought it would be more fun opening box with ready doll in it. But now I think that making own faceup is really great idea (if someone is talented and can do that). It is so personal and unique and you feel that this is YOUR doll and that way is obviosly cheeper. I definitely would buy a blank doll :)

    16. I got my first doll with a face-up because I already found the hobby so daunting as a whole. It's totally up to the individual, though. Artsier or more daring people might want to do a face-up on their first doll!

    17. I've ordered my first doll with a face-up but that was because she's a blue-skin mermaid with fins and things on her arms, legs, hands and feet... and her ears are "fish-y." I really want to do a face-up but I thought that might be a little complicated for my first go at it.

I just ordered my second doll, and she comes with a company face-up as well. I had wanted to get her blank but MoC only had the face-up in stock and I didn't want to wait as long as I have to for my first one to get here... (Did that make sense?) :?

I figure once I'm ready to do my own face-up I'll just remove the ones they come with, and since I'm pretty new to the hobby; it'll be good for me to see a few face-ups in person before I attempt one on my own.

I'm soo excited I can barely stand it though! :P :D I can't wait for my first doll to get here!

    18. It depends of make-up.. I don't like agressive or too bright make-up and if the chosen doll has such kind of face, I will prefer it without make-up. I also suppose that sometimes the default make-up can't match to the doll's character that I have in my mind..

    19. Company Faceup for 1st BJD and all my BJD. I have zero talent, so why mess up a good thing.

    20. My first doll will be with default face-up, I like the company's face-up and I don't want to take a risk with my poor skill to do face-up by myself.
