It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. First doll w/ or w/o a face-up?

Feb 11, 2011

    1. My first doll I went with the face-up that the ebay seller had. I'm not sure if it was the same as the default though. But I wasn't about to try and do it myself lol.

    2. My first doll Noyiril has his default face up by his doll company ^^But I have try now to buy dolls without face ups because I want to try face up for them by myself. Though, I guess that I will take another doll with default face up, because she looks absolutely gorgeous with that face up, and I like that face up pretty much <3

    3. I got my first without a faceup because I thought I could do it on my own, I quickly realized I was horribly wrong
If you have has experience with faceups then it's fun to do your own, if you haven't you might ruin your doll

    4. Personally I would say always get your first doll with a face up.
If you get a blank doll, you can't really take photos of it as much and if it's your first doll, you're way too impatient to send it off again to get it painted!
Plus, I wouldn't recommend trying to paint your very first doll if you've never tried anything like that before... but maybe that's just me. xD

    5. I got my first doll without a face-up because I wanted to do it myself. I was TERRIFIED at first and it took me 6 or 7 months to actually DO it and when I finally did I found out I wasn't very good at it at first but after 4 or 5 tries I certainly figured out what I was doing. Now I'm much more confident with what I'm doing. Still not great at it but I'm glad I got her without so that I had no choice but to buck up and do it!

    6. got my first doll with factory face up. im happy with it

    7. I agree! I got my first doll without the face up,and I think attempting a face up as a beginner discouraged and intimidated me. Maybe people should get the default face up just so they can see what it's supposed to look like.

    8. I think it depends on your preference. If you are happy with the default faceup the manufacturer offers or think it's perfect and just what you want your doll to look like, or if you are scared or unsure to do it yourself it's fine to order faceup.
But I don't think it really matters if you someday want to try doing the faceup yourself if it's your first or your tenth doll, it will always be the first faceup.
So yeah, I wanted to do it myself from the beginning so all of my three honeys so far came/will come to me blank.
My first attempt looks good in my personal opinion. far from perfect but still good enough for me to love it, and I could always redo it if I start to get dissatisfied with it. The second was already way better.
Maybe I can say that because I'm very comfortable with miniature drawings, even if I'd only done them on paper before and never on a doll, but scale whise it's pretty much the same to me.
Anyway, I'd say if you feel like trying, you should order a blank. And if you find out that it's not for you, doing faceups yourself I mean, you can always ask one of those many awesome commissioners out here on the forum to do it for you. :>

    9. My first doll was without make up and secondhand. I ended up sending her out to someone to do make up as I wasn't confident and scared of ruining her. It took awhile to complete her but it was all worth it. If I could do it all over, I would have wanted her with face up :)

Pros: Some company default make up are really lovely and worth it (considering if you have to pay for commission + shipping both ways if you have gotten your doll blank). Less troublesome to send out and waiting time as a whole.

Cons : The company make up are pretty generic/default (unless they have a premium make up option) and if you have a specific look in mind, a good face up artist would be able to convey what you want.

    10. I absolutely want it with a face up. I'm relatively experienced with painting, but not with painting faces on dolls, so i want to practice first before i attempt to do them myself. I'm getting a Freya from JunkySpot so I figure that will be great for practice ;D

    11. My first doll won't have a face-up made by the company, because i have something very special in mind. But i won't do it myself either, because.... yeah, 2 left hands when it comes to something like painting. So the face-up will be done by someone i know and who is going to get a very detailed describtion of what i want. ;)

    12. I got mine blank. None of the company faces really "clicked" with me, and I didn't want to spend more money than I absolutely had to, so I got her without faceup and painted her myself. I think she turned out fine, plus I know that I can always re-do her faceup should anything happen to it (heaven forbid!) or if I need to change it at some point for story reasons - even though stories won't happen in a hurry since I need more than one doll for them *_* The more I think about it, the more I like the idea of doing faceups myself in order to have a "unique" doll - even though some company faceups are absolutely lovely, I'd still want to make the dolls my very own characters with the look I have in mind for them.

    13. My first doll I got without a face up, I wanted this because I wanted to give my doll a custom faceup myself.

    14. Though for your first bjd did you get it with or with out a face-up?
I will be getting my first with a faceup and clothing.(I do not want my dolls running around naked.)

Do you think people who are new to bjds should get a face-up first, then try to do a face-up on maybe the second doll, or after a while?

What I think is that it is up to them. Everyone has there likes and dislikes. My second doll I will have someone else do a faceup for me.(I do not want to mess it up.)

This is just how I feel about this. Though If I could get a company faceup for all my dolls I would.(But I know will not be able to.) I just want my doll experience to be a happy one. I would get too frustrated if I did the faceup my self and with my memory It would always be there with the doll. (Even if after awhile I finely did it correctly.)

    15. I got mine with a face up because I really liked the make up.

    16. I wouldn't buy a doll with a face-up, ever, period, unless it was a second hand marketplace that I could scrub off the second I got it out of the box. I'd never want someone elses work on my doll, and CERTAINLY would never pay for it.

    17. i'm actually not very artistic in general at all. i'm more in the hobby for the clothing, fashion and fleshing out character images. I search around for nice faceups, one day i might request a faceup from someone though.

    18. My first and second are Face up. Because DD Saber is limited edition so she come with the face up.
my second also came with Face up because his company face up is very cute

    19. I got my first one without the face up... just a head
and the second one with company's face up...
but after keep practicing... I can do the face up for my dolls myself now..
for the first one... my suggestion is to have face up done by the company^^

    20. I will receive a blank head. But I'm quite prepared to go try out a basic faceup template ... I'm just afraid that my doll would be ruined if I do not follow the proper steps and materials (and theres ALOT to take note of) ...
well ... if it fails ...
gah I'll pay a local faceup artist! =-=
