Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. First doll w/ or w/o a face-up?

Feb 11, 2011

    1. Face-up, definitely definitely, face-up.
it's kind of terrifying getting your first doll period, with all the stuff you have to learn. I think a person should take their time to research how to do a face-up and then decide if they want to change it at all. A bad face-up can change your entire perspective on a doll and that's not a good first step into the hobby, especially if the newby doesn't like the face-up themselves.

    2. I had faceups on my first several. My two most recent I've gotten blank and had someone else do the faceups for me.

The fact is not everybody can do a faceup and have it turn out the way they want. I find it easiest--and best--to leave it to the professionals. But if you're an artist, you could go with a blank head first and probably get away with it.

    3. I ordered my first doll with a face-up, it was just easier that way
but I am thinking about getting her repainted someday.

    4. I've ordered my first one w/ a face-up, mainly because I love the default face!

    5. I've been drawing for many years so when i got my first doll last year i decided i was going to do the face-up myself. Sadly i didn't get to doing it until this year because i was doing loads of research to make sure i was using the right products etc. But i feel closer to him knowing i did it myself rather than a company or face-up artist. It's my own preference but it was a great experience! I need loads of practice but it's enjoyable. And i feel it may save me some money in the long run to learn how to do it myself :)

    6. I bought my first doll with the company face up- I'd be so scared to ruin her face, I'd never practice my first face up on a new, important doll. Not unless I had to, anyway. I don't have any problem with people doing face-ups on their first dolls, but I really wanted a doll that I could just take out and dress right away, without having to worry about it having no face >.<

    7. I got mine without company face-up ordered him blan
and well I did the face-up on my own ^_^ its not that bad. ;)

    8. I bought my first bjd a few weeks ago with a face-up, in fact I didn't even know what a face up meant until I checked it on google! I think I would be too scared to paint a face myself as I am useless at painting. I know you can wipe off your mistakes providing you use the right products but I think I would rather pay an artist whose work I liked.

    9. My first doll had a faceup.

    10. I am waiting for my first three dolls to be delivered....all with company faceups, what a coward, huh? As a newbie, I was wanting a finished good looking doll in hand before trying my luck with a faceup. Now I will look for a head that I can experiment on, knowing that bad jobs can be "wiped" is a relief.

    11. My first doll should be here tomorrow and I bought her without company faceup, their faceup didn't fit what I have in mind. I've been crafting for a long time, sewing, painting, drawing ect. so I feel brave enough to give it a try :D

I think it's whatever the person is confortable with, if I really liked the company faceup I would get it for sure but I like to do thing myself and if it doesn't work then I get someone else to do it for me haha

    12. I ordered my first doll blank because I wanted to try practicing faceups for future dolls. Knowing that I could always redo the faceup helped with the decision. After receiving my doll, I noticed he was much cuter than in company pictures even though he was blank. Sometimes I do feel bad that he won't have better than what I can give him though. x_x;

    13. Hi, I am new in Den of Angels. I just ordered my first doll last month and am trying to wait patiently.

I ordered it with a face up becos I have no idea how to do a face up. But I have been watching Youtube and it seems fun to do one :)

    14. Oooh. i think I'm getting my first doll with a company face up through the company's custom face up system. I have no skill for making face-ups and I haven't found the perfect person to do my doll's face up so instead of keeping her blank face for months I rather have the face up. c:

    15. I bought my first two dolls from AoD when they were a brand spanking new company. AoD gave away faceups, eyes, and swimsuits as incentives. My Rao came with ruby pink eyes and a pink and purple faceup. Uh yeah, that had to go -- immediately. My WangZi looks much better, boyish and natural. Most of my dolls since then have been blank, so I could put my own spin on them.

    16. Faceup.. I'd be terrified to purchase one faceupless.

    17. I would recommend buying the company faceup so your first doll is ready to go when he arrives.

I ordered my first doll with a company faceup, and I'm glad I did... he was ready to be played with and photographed as soon as he had his wig and clothes. I've since wiped that doll's faceup and repainted him to be more to my liking, but it took me almost a year to work up the courage and gather the materials and knowledge to be able to do that. I was terrified it would look bad...

A faceup will really add to that 'wow' factor for a beginner when they first open that box, and I know I would have found it incredibly daunting to have to paint the doll's face as soon as I opened him up. (Blank dolls... tend to drive me crazy.) On the other hand, a faceup you've done yourself can really solidify a bond with the doll, make him feel unique, and most importantly make him feel like he's yours.

Still... you'll want to do some research into materials and techniques before you decide to face your doll up yourself, and be... realistic about your artistic abilities. It would be terrible if that faceup didn't turn out right and it discouraged you from BJDs altogether. :(

    18. I honestly prefer to get all my dolls with company face-ups. I've found I enjoy having all my characters with similar aesthetics, which includes face-ups. I do modify the face-ups to make them my own (often changing the colours of eyeshadow, eyebrows and lips, and sometimes adding more blush).

I don't think I would have enjoyed getting my first doll without a face-up, because at the time I had no interest in doing face-ups myself (I prefer blushing bodies and fantasy parts).

I also have a bad habit of falling in love with the company face-ups, too :sweat

    19. I got mine without a face-up but people should get theirs with the make up when they are buying it for the first time!

    20. Depends. If the company's face-up suits my pans for the doll then yes. Otherwise (and it happens 98% of the time) no, i will do it myself.
